    Title: Heat

    Author: Ed McBain
    Narrator: Dick Hill
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-25-12
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
During a sweltering heat wave, Detectives Carella and Kling try to make sense of an artist who turned off his air conditioning to commit suicide - but Kling has an even deadlier problem on his hands.
    Critic Reviews:
Imagine your favorite Law & Order cast solving fresh mysteries into infinity, with no re-runs, and you have some sense of McBains grand, ongoing accomplishment. (Entertainment Weekly)
McBain has the ability to make every character believable - which few writers these days can do. (Associated Press)
    Members Reviews:
Classic novel in the detective genre
Ed McBain has been one of the superstars of the detective story genre for many years, but this was the first of his detective novels that I have read. (I believe I read The Blackboard Jungle many years ago when I was in college.) I enjoyed this book - it reminded me of a long episode of The Twilight Zone. I definitely felt like I was reading in black and white because the story took place in an era when that was how you watched TV - in living black and white. Although I found this book worth reading, I would not give up my David Baldacci and Michael Connelly books to read more by this author.
    Another good genre piece
Despite a Bert Kling storyline which is, as always, a drag, the rest of Heat is a solid entry to the 87th Precinct series. An interesting mystery with a few good sideline stories.
Per . Usual a good read
Keeps your interest throughout the book and though you can find yourself jumping ahead it doesn't fail to satisfy you
    The Poirot Prequel.
Dated language but a solid mystery tale, though predictable because of having seen the Poirot films based on the novel viewed many times. The first of the Poirot stories (though not the first book), it provides a nice introduction to the Belgian detective through the eyes of Hastings and a the detective's interactions with a typically troubled English upper crust family.
    Five Stars
    Great book on tape.

But Deborah doesnt want power or money - she only wants the truth.

    Light Hearted unoriginal Adventure
What did you love best about Tears of the Jaguar?
I can't say I loved anything. The pace was pretty good and the storyline kept me mostly engaged although it felt like other stories of its type and not at all original. There was nothing to love.
What other book might you compare Tears of the Jaguar to and why?
    The Nosferatu Scrolls.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The accents were appalling which made any parts of the story not involving Americans hard to stomach. Couldn't figure out why the British MI5 agent sometimes sounded slightly Scottish, other times Irish and then slipped into Dick Van Dyke cockney from time to time. This was the same for the Lancaster accent, ARRRGGHHH! The Spanish accents were off too.
    Any additional comments?
This is a light Adventure story, fairly well paced, but a bit too interwoven in places and lacking something, I went with the flow and was entertained though annoyed by the narrators accents. I was surprised not to like the main character more, in fact, there aren't any really strong or likeable characters in this book. Perhaps that's what is missing?
    Don't waste a credit
    Any additional comments?
I bought this as a "deal of the day" and I regret the purchase. The plot is needlessly complicated and far fetched. The narrator is a slow speaker, combined with the glacial pace of the plot, I actually moved the narration speed on my ipod up to 2x to muscle through the end.
    Just couldn't keep listening
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    A better narrator! I couldn't make it past a half hour - I couldn't take it.
What could A. J. Hartley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I may try reading it on my Kindle so I can give the story a chance
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tanya Eby?
    Anyone
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    I don't know I couldn't keep listening
    I give up
This was on sale, and looked like a good $3.95 fun time. I quit. I thought at least it would get me through the weekend chores, but it is just too dumb. I give it 2 stars for effort.
    The Most Delightful Potsticker
This is not great literature. Any time I try to describe the plot everyone in the room bursts out laughing. But it is one of the most fun reads I've had in quite a while.

    Leo Waterman: the defective detective
I'm listening to all of G.M. Ford's Leo Waterman modern private detective series in random order. The Bum's Rush is my 3rd. Like the others it is a fun, light listen. G.M. Ford is a very talented mystery/thriller writer who manages to get Leo and his group of misfit friends in and out of trouble. It is not great literature, but it is a fun way to spend a few hours.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
When spray-painted graffiti appears on the wall of Christy Burke's pub, indicating that there's a killer on the premises, Burke's grandson, Father Brennan Burke, is asked to investigate the vandalism. Though not at all keen on probing into the lives of the bar's clientele, he has little choice once a body is found on the property. Issuing orders from a cell in Mountjoy Prison, the pub's current owner wants the problem solved without the police anywhere near his building.
Assisted by his pal Monty Collins and fellow priest Michael O'Flaherty, Brennan begins to uncover dark secrets worth killing for in the lives of the pub regulars. In addition to the events surrounding the pub, Brennan's murder investigation becomes overshadowed by ominous events in Belfast that may soon come home to roost in Dublin.
Sinister figures are spotted in and around the pub, people are being followed in the street, and Brennan comes to possess explosive information that he cannot reveal to security forces. The situation compels him to take a hard look at Irish history and his family's place in it, and he can't shake the feeling that an act of violence in Northern Ireland is about to be avenged soon - and very close to home.

    The worst of the series
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I've enjoyed all the other books in the series, but this one couldn't hold my interest. Only a person who is steeped in the Irish Freedom movement would possibly stick to it - the plot was thin.
Has Death at Christy Burkes: A Collins-Burke Mystery, Book 6 turned you off from other books in this genre?
Not at all, just this particular story.
Did Christian Rummel do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
I think the narrator has done these characters enough to have a good grip on how to portray them.
What character would you cut from Death at Christy Burkes: A Collins-Burke Mystery, Book 6?
I'd cut the book, or rewrite it to make it more interesting.
    Yuck
What would have made Death at Christy Burkes: A Collins-Burke Mystery, Book 6 better?
I simply cannot get into this book, its so boring and dry. I believe it's the worst of the series. I love this series, but not this book.
    My last Anne Emery
Well, I seem to be in a minority again, I really didn't enjoy this book as it was so political - all about the Irish troubles - I didn't even find it very well balanced, with heavy leaning towards the Catholic point of view - (I don't hold any opinion on the specific rights and wrongs of the issue so do not think that my comment is biased in itself)
Considering that this was supposed to be a murder mystery, the actual death that was being 'investigated' seemed just a minor incident that didn't form much of the story - I am just SO disappointed in this book - I managed the 2nd star because I was at least driven to finish it.
I particularly noticed the Canadian stresses in some of the Irish speech - with INquery being emphasised on the first syllable rather than enQUIRy.....

    Great book!
I have read or listened to every Death on Demand book in the series. I love Kate Reading. She does a good job of reading.
This is light reading, but, interesting good story and always surprise endings.
    Carolina Ladies Front and Center
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes this is a great series. Some better than others, but worth recommending. A little much on the facts for the Mystery. Had to re-listen to catch everything.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It was sad, each time I listen it still gives me pause.
Have you listened to any of Kate Readings other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, she brings authority and calm to the characters.
    Interesting plot
I'm so glad the early books were added. I started with the earliest Death on Demand available on Audible at the time. They don't have to be read in order, but it seems more fun that way. Classic mystery techniques.
Love the Annie and Lawrence series
Carolyn hart is great author of mysteries that are more on thinking and violence.
And enjoy the contest of 5 water color post or the mention of other authors
    Enjoyable and Entertaining
I enjoyed this book. The characters and plot were entertaining. I will probably buy the next book in the series.

My first James Patterson and now a fan !
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I'd recommend the book without a doubt. It was my first James Patterson (obviously I've been living under a rock or something) and it was really good. The pace was good, story was interesting and not overly predictable.
What other book might you compare 1st to Die to and why?
For fans of Lee Child / Jack Reacher I'd give it a go. Its not of the same quality but its not a bad example of the thriller genre.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I was really distracted by the narrator. Parts were really over dramatised and the pretend sobbing just made me cringe. The pausing was inappropriate and she seemed to punctuate with loud breaths and mouth sounds. I would avoid purchasing another with her narrating.
    Any additional comments?
Overall it was a good read. The writer didn't quite nail the women's friendships that were detailed within the story but its not distracting and I'd like to see how the concept of the club unfolds throughout the rest of the series.
    Good story. Annoying reader
This is a great story but the reader was so annoying - too much saliva! She kept smacking & swallowing throughout.
Great Story, Shame about the Narrator
James Patterson writes a brilliant story that keeps you gripped. The narrator though is off putting with the constant pausing for breath and swallowing saliva is making me think twice about downloading the other murder club books.
Loved the book, hated the narrator!
What did you like most about 1st to Die?
Great book ! had me gripped, although I actually managed to guess some of the narrative, but got a nice twist at the end.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Hated the narrator - she actually made me feel sick - with the weird slurping and slapping of lips when talking. *shudder* wish i'd read the review before downloading - as I want to listen to more - but I can't have her doing that again. Why didn't the person editing say something!
1st to Die: The Women's Murder Club, Book 1
A good story, well written. Excellent characters. As with all audio books, different narrators have different styles. I find once I become used to the narrator, I can lose my self in the book very easily. I shall be looking to download the next in the series.

The book behind the major motion picture High and Low, King's Ransom is the 10th book in Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series. Here, McBain delivers the full-throttle action and suspense we have come to expect. When a wealthy businessman is faced with a kidnapping, the ransom could ruin his biggest deal ever - unless Detective Steve Carella can find the culprits before the kidnapping turns to murder.
    Critic Reviews:
McBain has the ability to make every character believable - which few writers these days can do. (Associated Press)
McBain forces us to think twice about every character we meet even those we thought we already knew." (The New York Times Book Review)
    Members Reviews:
    Seriously off
I'd previously read a couple of these 87th Precinct books that I thought were clever and entertaining (Fat Ollie's Book and Fiddlers). This one, though, is really awful. It seemed like nobody could think of a plan to deal with solving a kidnapping except by shaming a wealthy man into paying the ransom for another man's child. The police didn't seem to be doing anything other than abetting the kidnappers in collecting the ransom; not a stitch of actual police work or detection. The only suspense was whether the idiot police could manage to follow the kidnappers' instructions well enough to get the kid back. Fortunately the civilians took care of that matter themselves. Couple of cute twists in the end, but not worth wading through the muck to get there. I guess a lot of people liked the movie that was based on this, but I can only assume they had a bunch of really cute actors.
    Missed badly for me
While I have enjoyed all of the series I have listened too thus far, this story and the narration were just annoying
Dick Hill is simply the best
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend any book read by Dick Hill, this one is extra great because it is one of Ed McBain's better stories.
What did you like best about this story?
The terrific dialogue, excellent pacing and plotting.
What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Dick Hill is one of the two best narrators working, in my opinion. When he used to read Connelly's Harry Bosch books - he WAS Harry Bosch. No one since has come close to nailing the character and stories like Hill did.
I will buy any book or series that Hill reads. He is that good. He knows when to go big, pull it back; he understands the story he is telling - he's not there just to read a book and pick up a check. He is completely invested in every character and storyline.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes. Absolutely.
