    Title: The Black Angel
    Author: John Connolly
    Narrator: Jeff Harding
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-10-12
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
The Black Angel is not an object. The Black Angel is not a myth. The Black Angel lives. A young woman goes missing from the streets of New York. Those who have taken her believe that nobody cares about her, and that no one will come looking for her. They are wrong. She is 'blood' to the killer Louis, the man who stands at the right hand of private detective Charlie Parker, and Louis will tear apart anyone who stands in the way of his attempts to find her. But as Louis's violent search progresses, Parker comes to realize that the disappearance is part of an older mystery, one that is linked to an ornate church of bones in Eastern Europe, to the slaughter at a French monastery in 1944, and to the quest for a mythical prize that has been sought for centuries by evil men: the Black Angel.
Yet the Black Angel is more than a myth. It is conscious. It dreams. It is alive. And men are not the only creatures that seek it

Lecter eats Langdon in Marlowes office.
I have not read this particular genre before but it was a cracking first read of a John Connolly book. Part serial killer thriller, part detective noir and part supernatural mystery but with just the right touch of humour and a freshness to the prose to keep you listening. Imagine Silence of the lambs meets the Da Vinci code with the mystery untangled by Raymond Chandler after a night watching the Omen.
Not only does John Connollys story entertain but Jeff Harding as the narrator does an excellent job. I feel he struggled in one or two places with pronunciation but overall he brought the book to life.
    Undercurrents
Probably my favourite Charlie Parker novel. A fine selection of characters, humour, rich language with the recurring undercurrent becoming more clear. I love the hints of the eternal struggle between good and evil manifested in the corporeal plane.
The disintegration of Charlie's marriage at first seems a little cliched but as things develop cliched is not what it is.
Once against wonderfully read by Jeff Harding. Thanks Jeff
    Another classic
I enjoyed having Jeff Harding back. another. classical book by John Connolly really enjoyed listening, I have read all the Charlie Parker books and Jeff really brings Parker alive, so settle back and let the Black Angel take you into unknown realms, thoroughly enjoyed it
    yes
This book was very good, but I wish Audible didn't require at least 15 words to submit a good review; yes, I see the irony in this.
    The supernatural breaks through
An excellent, well written crime novel. But at this point on the series the supernatural bleeds through so it can't be denied any more. Previously there were hints of ghosts seen from a world beyond the living, but these could have been dismissed as psychological effects of guilt. No more. The Fallen angels live amongst us. Delighting in nightmare horrors. Charlie Parker falls unwillingly into the role of protector. But can one guilt ridden man save humanity from an evil so hideous it was banished from heaven and is beyond God's redemption? Let's hope so.

    Interesting story and well narrated
What did you love best about The Con Man?
The narrator did a good job of bringing the characters to life.
What did you like best about this story?
The author used several different stories to illustrate his points.
Have you listened to any of Dick Hills other performances before? How does this one compare?
    n/a
    yes
Dick Hill is amazing at capturing the attention of the reader and Evan hunter was a tremendous writer
Brilliant narrative & splendid McBain descriptions
This is only the second McBain book I read and the first as an audio book.
I really like this format. I have listened as I have done running. McBain's detailed and sometime quite humorous descriptions of people and surroundings are enchantingly witty and yet spot on. The vivid narrative of Mr Hill was also very good giving the characters personality with his change of voice and accents.
The story was also very good. Dead girl bodies had been found floating in the river. Each girl had a heart with three letters on her hand between the thumb and the index finger. Additionally two confidence artists are tricking money from people in the area of the 87th precinct. Detectives Brown and Carello have some job to do.
    You gotta love Teddy...
Great story, Great characters, and Great dialogue. Literary masterpiece? read Moby Dick, for an enjoyable light romp into the 50's and the life of cops back when they ruled... This is the series!!! Teddy is my favorite character after reading 3 novels in the series. You will have to read them to find out why, no spoilers here!
    Narration is perfect!
The 87th Precinct was the first police procedural serial I ever read and that was at least three decades ago. I laughed the minute I heard the narrator: perfect voice for the book! To be sure, some age wrinkles show through as well might be expected but nonetheless, one heck of a good listen and incredibly tense at the end.

    Another good!!!
These are definately fireside listens. They are far fetched in that the police are so laid back. Hopefully this is not the way in real life, but they make for easy and enjoyable listening.
I am going through the whole series in the proper order, and enjoying each of these books.
    Pretty good mystery
Monica Ferris has crafted a pretty good mystery, as well as likable characters. I find myself wondering what trouble Betsy can drag Jill into next. Susan Boyce, as always gives a beautiful performance in bringing the characters to life.
    Guessing until the End
Having read this series when it first came out, I decided to listen to the audio version on my work commute. Apparently I had forgotten to read this one because the story was new and the mystery, like the sleepy Betsy, kept eluding my brain. I love the twists and turns. the voice actress was consistent with only one vocal slip on a very minor character. An excellent choice!
    What's with the incorrect pronunciation?
In the past month I've listen to several of the needlework stories. I'm surprised the narrator, who is a professional never learned the correct pronunciation of so many Minnesota towns and legendary names. She mispronounces Wayzata, Brule, Medina, Ole, Edina....and more. She doesn't get better as the series goes on. I hope the story never takes place in Grand Rapids and she needs say the name of the Main Street "pokegama".
Love Monica Ferris! Narration A Bit Choppy. However...
I so enjoy Monica Ferris mysteries!
This narration was a bit challenging for me to listen to at first due to it being so choppy. However, I have listened to later book marathons by Susan Boyce and she is much improved!

    Murder for Nothing
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, because while the descriptions of life running a tea house are sweet and informative, the mystery itself is too far-fetched to be believable. Police officers do NOT let civilians lead criminal chases, much less without back-up a la Old West Cowboy style. Trying not to give spoilers: The apprehension of the criminal does nothing to actually describe motive, nor do we actually hear anything from the criminal at the crucial end except for
What do you think your next listen will be?
My next listen will not be another offering from this author.
What three words best describe Barbara McCullohs voice?
    over the top
Was Scones & Bones worth the listening time?
Only 50% of the time, for descriptions of running the tea house and the events they sponsored.
    Any additional comments?
This book started off well, but the mystery wasn't focused and finished up too quickly, conveniently, and unbelievably. At the end, I wondered if it couldn't have been totally rewritten from Chapter 3 down a different plot line, one that was mentioned as key to the mystery but then ignored.
    Really dumb mystery
I was told that this was a good mystery series. I chose this book because of the plot. This book is in the middle of the series, so the heroine has been at many crime scenes. She tampers with the crime scene by absently picking up a clue, ruining the chain of evidence. When she realizes it, she withholds the evidence; instead, she interferes with a police investigation. The plot also has some major unresolved holes.
    voice
Poor voice choice. no southern softness . not the voice of a vibrant young woman. irritating.
    Wholesome!
A nice non-gory detail mystery with no cursing. Rated G. I liked the Narrator - excellent performance / reading.
    Terrific Novel!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This audiobook is outstanding. The first time I have felt so drawn in by the reader, Barbara McCulloh. The cast came alive! It was a new dimension in reading.
Barbara brought Theo, Drayton, Haley, and Det. Tidwell to life right in front of my ears
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I have read and enjoyed many of the Tea Shop mysteries by Laura Childs. I read Death by Darjeeling back in 2006. I knew Laura had a winner.
I love Charleston and Laura brings us into her town and all its history.
Have you listened to any of Barbara McCullohs other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've only heard three other readers before. She is the best! I will certainly look up her other performances
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A novel of suspense and pirate intrigue.
    Any additional comments?
Thanks for giving me a new experience in reading.

    Murder Unleashed
Johanna Parker did a good job narrating this book. Rita Mae Brown had a bit less involvement of the animals than she did in the Sneaky Pie Brown series. The animals are dogs instead of cats in this series. This story takes place in Reno NV and mainly has to do with the results of our economy. People homeless, looking for work etc. with murder tossed into the mix. Love the character "Jeep" reminds me of my great grandmother. Brown does her usual soap box political commentary but it was aimed at helping people more than her usual banter. Overall a fast reading book that is a change of pace with some humor that offsets the mayhem.
A little to "preachy", though the premis is good
I usually love anything written by Rita Mae Brown. The first book in this series set in the south west was good, and I had hopes for this second in the series. I was disappointed. the various dogs, as usual, pay important and good roles, but the author goes on and on and on. And on and on. And on. About the unfairness of the "economic recession" of 2008 and its aftermath in Las Vegas, Nevada in the housing industry. Forclosures, utilities turned off, people living in empty houses. People who are out of work and so on and so forth. Its a decent story and important, but the author goes on about it way too much before getting into the actual murder mystery. Other characters are the "hated politician", the "good sheriff", and all the "good but unemployed" people living in the houses. There is also the unrealistic side story of the young man who starved to death (realistic) and his near starved to death dog who makes a fine recovery in days with a little feeding and love (unrealistic). Most who have worked with long term starved animals knows it takes time and more than food for the animal to recover. Just feeding often kills them, and this story glosses over this - saying one vet visit and the vet says the dog is fine. No knowledgeable vet is going to say that about a near starved animal. This book is not up to Rita Mae Brown's usual good standard. Johanna Parker does a good job trying to save this story with her narration, but even she isn't able to make it a good book. I am disappointed and do not recommend this book unless you are heavily into political issues.
    love this series too
Would you consider the audio edition of Murder Unleashed to be better than the print version?
    yes
Who was your favorite character and why?
    mag rogers
Which character as performed by Johanna Parker was your favorite?
    the aunt
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Publisher's Summary:
Author Bryan Gruleys The Hanging Tree is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to his Edgar Award-nominated debut, Starvation Lake. After an 18-year absence, Gracie McBride returns to Starvation Lake and apparently commits suicide. But newspaper editor Gus Carpenter smells a rat.
    Members Reviews:
Gruley delivers a solid mystery for his second in the Gus Carpenter series...
For local reporter Gus Carpenter, the apparent suicide of Gracie McBride is more than just a news story that shakes up his sleepy hometown of Starvation Lake, MI. Gracie was Gus' second cousin, and while she had a wild past, and their relationship was fractious, she appeared to be on the verge of pulling her life together. But even many of those closest to Gracie think it could have been suicide, and Gus is dissuaded from pursuing the truth.
The Hanging Tree is Bryan Gruley's second mystery featuring Gus Carpenter, following last year's Starvation Lake. Gruley captures the desperation, anger and hurt of a small town on the verge of total collapse, as well as the frustrations Gus feels on a daily basis about his promising journalistic career in Detroit being derailed, forcing his return home. Couple that with the never-ending resentment of many Starvation Lake residents who still hold a grudge about Gus' letting the winning goal score in a state hockey tournament some 20+ years earlier, and you can understand it's not easy being home.
Gruley is a great writer and I definitely enjoyed the twists and turns this story took. I really like Gus' character and many of the supporting characters who have appeared in both books; I can visualize many of them in my mind's eye. I was a little frustrated with this book, however, for two reasons. First, I felt as if Gruley threw every possible plot device--the estranged husband, the boss who just doesn't understand, the townspeople angry over something that happened years ago, etc.--into the story, which detracted from my full commitment to it. And second, it always frustrates me when so much in a book (or in life, for that matter) could be solved if people would just talk to one another. But instead, we had people avoiding one another, not saying how they feel, not answering the phone, etc. That being said, however, these are more my pet peeves than actual flaws in the story.
    Well Done.
Enjoyed it more than first salvation Lake book since I already knew many characters. Northern Michigan setting is authenic. Detroit setting is also but not as scary as depicted. Gruly still goes into too much hockey blah blah for this non-fan. Twist in story is fun. As former journalist i did run across a few wanna bes like Philo but most never finally got it as in book. All in all, good read well done.
Tautly woven with nice hockey references to change it up
Tense and poignant at the same time.
I really liked this novel, mostly because the main character, Gus, is more than a little bit stubborn and hardheaded and when you add hockey into that mix there really isn't much not to love about the entire novel. I am a huge fan of the way that Gruley has Gus realize that even though he has lived with his cousin/de facto sister, Grace, for most of his life he doesn't know her.

A mytery formula that works well
Aimee Leduc gets herself into a whole lot of trouble. Not just once, but in every one of the novels in Cara Blackâs redoubtable series about the brilliant young Parisian private detective. She has a real talent for plunging into dangerous situations â and sheâs got the scars to prove it. In Murder in Montmartre, the sixth setting in Blackâs moveable sideshow through the neighborhoods of Paris, Aimeeâs reliable friends all appear â fortunately so, because this time sheâs tangling not just with the Corsican mob but with the corrupt upper reaches of the Paris police as well.
Good friends when you need them
Every detective, public or private, needs a circle of friends, if only to open up room for dialogue. For Aimee, thereâs Miles Davis, her faithful little dog. Morbier, a commissaire of the Paris police, her godfather. A former partner on the police force of Aimeeâs late father, Morbier thinks heâs saving Aimee from her herself. And, of course, Rene Friant, the skillful computer hacker, her business partner in the Leduc Agency. Despite his short stature â heâs a dwarf â Rene proves to be adept at streetfighting as well. More than once, he proves his ability to extricate Aimee from danger.
In every novel in the series, these three characters play featured roles, along with a handful of newly revealed friends and new enemies. Blackâs formula, although predictable, is invariably entertaining. Aimeeâs adventures are fun to behold. And the authorâs ongoing Parisian geography lesson is a treat for Francophiles.
    Enduring mysteries in Aimeeâs past
The mysteries surrounding Aimeeâs parents are another familiar element in Blackâs successful formula. Her American mother, a left-wing revolutionary activist, has disappeared, apparently into East Germany. Her beloved father, the former policeman who took over his fatherâs role in the Leduc Agency, died in a mysterious explosion on a Parisian street.

    **Stunning! Brilliant! Fabulous All Round!**
The best audiobook I've listened to in a long time. The storyline has twists and turns and depth to it. We are given the background scenery in brief, not describing it at length so as to be able to make the book bigger as alot of authors seem to do. Fast moving. Strong characters.
Beth Chalmers is a brilliant narrator. Each character is unique. I'm not so much a fan of women narrators as they are either dry or overdo it. Beth is spot on and carries us smoothly and does credit to this already thrilling story.
Make sure you follow this one up with Tuesdays Gone. I'm half way through it and it's turning out to be just as good.
    A gripping book, expertly read
What did you love best about Blue Monday?
Everything. The characters, how the story flows and unfolds, and the disfunctionality of Frieda's circle.
Who was your favorite character and why?
A toss-up between Frieda and Joseph.
