4 stars. Good suspense. Exciting.

The beginning was a little slow, but the last half was excellent.

Parker is not a caring type of guy. But I liked the subtle way he acted for Claires benefit. Her home was important to her. Parker went out of his way to make sure murders would be found far enough away, so they would not taint her town.

I chuckled at Claires thought process when buying a rifle. She bought based on things other than purpose.

This story was a little different from earlier Parker stories. After a robbery, two psycopaths who are not part of the robbery hunt, torture, and kill each member of the robbery gang. It was good suspense watching them go after Claire and Parker and then watching Parker go after them.

I liked the Forward by Charles Ardai. It appears in both books 13 and 14.

This was the best narrator so far - Keith Szarabjka. His gravely low voice for Parker fit well.

THE SERIES:

This is book 13 in the 24 book series. These stories are about bad guys. They rob. They kill. Theyre smart. Most dont go to jail. Parker is the main bad guy, a brilliant strategist. He partners with different guys for different jobs in each book.

If you are new to the series, I suggest reading the first three and then choose among the rest. A few should be read in order since characters continue in a sequel fashion. Those are listed below (with my star ratings). The rest can be read as stand alones.

Classic Parker!

This is one of the greatest Parker novels, and the performance is up to the text. It really doesn't get any better.

Slow in places, but a high octane finish

Solid Parker novel. Less about a heist than Parker's attempts to protect Claire. In the end, this is my principal gripe with this book. Stark up to this point has emphasized Parker's ruthlessness and it seems like he breaks character a bit to indulge Claire when she does her best to put herself in danger. Exciting read, but starting to wonder what Parker sees in Claire.

Needs work

The idea of this book is really interesting but it needs more work to be in order to be complete. I read the entire book waiting to get to know the characters in this book but it never happened. The characters were introduced in a random and disorganized fashion. The romantic storyline with June and Oscar was also undeveloped. I couldn't tell if they were childhood friends or more than that. If I had to describe the book in one word, I would say it was anemic. It was more of an outline than a complete story. I can't recommend it in this condition but I will say that it was an interesting idea. I'm not sure I will buy the next book in this series.

Another charming story

This a great series. I started with book 6 because i got it free for a review. I am going back to start at the beginning. this book was fun and full of mystery and humor. I look forward to listening to the others. I just bought book 3.. However book 2 is not in audible. Hope it does go to audible. If not i guess i will read it.

a charming book

What made the experience of listening to A Charming Crime the most enjoyable?

I have read all of Tonya Kappes book and I find them imaginative & entertaining.

I like how we are getting to know all the different characters with all their quirks. And i love Mr. Prince Charming

Not worth the price - nice idea poorly implimented

A Charming Crime: A Magical Cures Mystery, Book 1 had great potential, sadly the book didn't live up to it.

Sadly it is a poorly written, badly paced tale that is hard to get involved in.

Kathy Beltner starts out alone to do a multi-mile snowshoe hike on a park trail only hours before dark, with snow falling and her cell phone left behind in her car. When she lets her mind wander to personal problems and gets off the main trail, she decides to play Daniel Boone through the woods instead of backtracking her steps to the known trail. And then the consequences of all these poor choices rain down on her head. She comes upon a well-lit, homey cabin occupied by a grisly bearded squatter and takes a .357 gunshot to her face.

When Chief of Police Lew Ferris wakes up that same day, all she has on her plate is an international ice fishing competition that is bringing in a spate of spectators and multiple television crews. By the time she goes to bed that night, she still has the ice fishing competition but she also has a murder, a stalker, and multiple cases of identity theft associated with someone hacking into the local tech collegeâs network.

Victoria Houston writes marvelous murder mysteries in the cozy genre. She has created realistic protagonists in Doc Osborne, Lew Ferris and Ray Pradt. They are characters who are qualified to investigate crimes, not the cupcake bakers or the quilting mavens or the bridge club members that many authors try to foist off on the reader. These are decent people, with integrity and intelligence. And they are believable in both their actions and their emotions.

So, if her mysteries are so well constructed with protagonists who are not only believable but feel like friends, why would I rate this work with only 2 stars? Because Houston chooses to insult her readers by being free and loose with the laws of physics and by being even freer and looser with the details of her main characterâs backstories.

And the discrepancies in both categories are blatantly noticeable. First, in this 11th book of the series, Houston tells the reader, in one of the recaps near the beginning of the story, that Doc met Lew and took his first fly-fishing lesson from her while she was still a patrol officer. Now, go back to the very first book, Dead Angler, where we meet Doc and Lew for the first time, in present tense and in real time. You will find that when they meet, Lew is not a patrol officer but Chief of Police and has been for some time.

Second, in this 11th book of the series, Houston tells us, again in recap, that Docâs wife has been dead for only two years. Now go back to the first book in the series again and Mary Lee has already been dead more than two years when we read the very first page. And this current book cannot be considered a prequel under any condition as Houston clearly references other events that have occurred in the intervening books, events that transpired at least four to five years after Mary Leeâs death.

But the third discrepancy topped it all.

A Matt Scudder Short

You never really expect to run into Matt Scudder anywhere but the West Side, but this story starts with Matt and Elaine in Italy. Turns out, you can take Matt out of New York, but he's still the same Matt Scudder. Lawrence Block never disappoints, and this story is no exception. You never can predict Block's characters -- but at the end, you realize it couldn't have gone any other way.

If you've never read Lawrence Block before, or if you've only read about Bernie, this is a great place to start your friendship with Matt.

Looking for a story

Okay...maybe I was a little too harsh considering this is Matt Scudder but-I need a Matt Scudder book not just a short story. The price was right, the author is always (for me anyway) the best and I've been a fan of Matt Scudder for years. This just wasn't enough for me.

Matt & Elaine are having a leisurely meal in Italy when Matt thinks he recognizes a man from his past. That man turns out to be a murderer he helped put away. Elaine soon leaves the scene as that man comes over to Matt's table to acknowledge their past dealings. Matt is still curious after all these years as to why such a heinous murder was committed in the first place.

The short story was L.B. at his best (or the best he could accomplish in such a short story) with creating the most devious mind boggling reason for that crime.

I have enjoyed Matt Scudder for so long that I may need to lay off the short stories since they just don't do it for me.

Looking for David, Finding Matt Scudder

Years after the crime, a killer who has done his time wants to confess to its true nature. He chooses Matt Scudder, ex-cop turned private detective, to hear his side of a grisly murder story. Lawrence Block, as always, creates something special using a well-loved character from many novels, a killer with a tale to tell, and a surprising motive for murder.

This lovely and chilling short story provides a welcome addition to one of my favorite bodies of work.

LAWRENCE BLOCK DOES NOT NEED ME TO SAY IT -----BUT TERRIFIC

A novella which is the definition of mystery.

Matthew and Elaine are on an ideal vacation in Italy. Sitting at an outdoor cafe in Florence, enjoying a perfect time.

Then Matthew recognizes and is recognized by a man from his past. This is a man who committed murder.

I will not tell any more, after all this is a novella.

This is a trip into motive and history and love.

I think that anyone who is a fan of Matthew Cutter will enjoy this book. As is to be expected, this is written beautifully.

But, then, this is a novella by Lawrence Block, what else would one expect.

A Scudder fan's quiet delight

This short story does nothing to advance Matthew Scudder's character development. It doesn't show Scudder hard at work, bulldoggedly solving a mystery. In fact, Scudder doesn't really do anything except sit around in Florence, Italy, chatting with Elaine and listening to the story of a guy he arrested back when he was a cop.

Would you listen to Mai Tai One On again? Why?

I'm keeping Mai Tai on my Ipod so I can listen again. It is well done with the voices matching the characters perfectly.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the Hula Maidens. Each voice was different and fit the character perfectly. The humor in the book kept me laughing and the story was great.

Don't waste your time

I figured out who did it and why in the first chapter. I forced myself to listen for the first 10 chapters before I skipped to the end to see if I was right. The villain actually said "Everything was going perfectly well until you and your friends started snooping around." Scooby Doo fans does this sound familiar? Come on!!! The dialogue was sub par, the detective made the classic mistake of blaming the one person who had a record, (and it did not matter that the charges had been dropped and it wasn't a violent offense). The pacing was incredibly slow and the characters were annoying. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

in this audio version the narrator is terrible....she is not adept at different voices; all the characters sound about the same

also, the narrator butchers the Hawaiian names/words, some of which are totally unintelligible ...

this poor performance by the narrator severely detracts from the enjoyment of this audio book

Like a story that keeps my interest

What made the experience of listening to Blood Lines the most enjoyable?

I never knew quite where the author was going to take the story. The characters were believable and contemporary, and it seemed that the book was well-researched.

Debbie brings the characters to life. She makes each character very distinctive. Especially effective was the "attitude" she conveyed in Cassidy Collins as she played against Sarah Armstrong.

probably not. it is ok but it is too melodramatic. and no surprises here. romance between two detectives. dramatic climax crime scene.

i have. i have read two of her book besides this. one i liked one i did not like. this is in the middle.

Loved this series and a narration.

I live near Boston so part of the charm is a local flavor. I love the characters in the series. The mystery in this book is very well done. And as in all books of this series discussions about Conservative Jewish religion are very modern and interesting.

The Best Thus Far!

I have enjoyed every book since Friday's, but this one is the best thus far! The Rabbi is so lucky, despite being so orthodox!

I'm learning lots of little snippets about Judaism as well, which I find fascinating. It's a shame that it's getting towards the end of the series. I'm going to miss him.

One of the best in the series!

I've listened to all the Savannah Reid series thus far, and have enjoyed each book. They are nice cozy mysteries with mostly a PG story line and fairly good morals for a book set in L.A. I've been very pleased with the subtle tones of this series. I haven't felt like the author has tried to indoctrinate me!

In previous issues, although very enjoyable, I found myself yelling at the characters because they failed to recognize what was right before their faces. It was obvious to me but the "detectives" fail to put it together! However, this installment is a bit better. I actually had a different culprit in mind.. and was very surprised at the ending. Consequently, I found this book to be the best so far!

The narrator is very good. I don't have a problem distinguishing which character is speaking. And, in this book.. she nails the accent of the snooty L.A. society teen perfectly!

Yes, I'd recommend this series to anyone that likes a good mystery with fairly decent morals.

Still enjoying this series...

I'm still enjoying this series, G.A. McKevett writes original stories and her characters continue to grow. If you're a fan of cozy mysteries then you won't want to miss this one.

Another good cozy read with Savannah not only solving murder(s) but hosting yet another dysfunctional visitor. It's fun listening to her southern witticisms and sarcasm and appreciating the relationship she has with Dirk more and more.
