A good READ!

I enjoyed this book alot. The main characters weve well developed. The intensity of the story reached a high level early and maintained its self to the end. The plot was well thought out and seemed very believeable.Especially enjoyed the southwest setting as described by the author. Rather than a mystery I feel this is an excellent adventure story that grabs you from begining to end!

Kirk has always been a fantastic writer. He can cover any subject with flawless excellence. He does very

extensive research. I have been a serious fan since 1966. He is has the additional talent of being a mesmerizing speaker. I believe that covers it !

couldn't put it down

Twists and turns and just when you think you've got it figured out, Mitchell surprises you. Good characters. South west location for this book. Read this one and you'll be hooked on the whole series. This book is where Parker & Turnipseed first meet. Turnipseed is still a rookie, in future books she is stronger---but this is the adventure that takes her past being a rookie---she learns the hard way in this one.

Potential, but too mechanical

A clever mind at work here, but far too mechanical and complicated. It involves most of the tricks and gimmicks used by crimes writers, if not them all. Definitely the first book I have read that sprayed suspicion on each and every character in the story. May be a tongue-in-cheek effort by a professional editor or College Professor incapable of an original plot or story.

Something about it seemed off, like it was written separately by a team of people and then coalesced by the HAL 5000. It left me wanting.

Okay- not great

I was expecting a better story when I purchased this audiobook based on reviews I'd heard. The narration was fine, and the story was okay- but it was not as engaging or intriguing as I was hoping it would be. I liked it enough to finish it, and some parts of the story and characters were much more interesting than others.

Curiously engaging

Dolan books have a strange allure for me. He's got great writing potential even if it's never fully realized. Still, he entertained me throughout. It feels as though it's missing something though I can't quite define what , but in an odd way, that intangible missing piece added to the books allure. It has a good plot, decent if not great character construction, and some pretty solid writing.

A Bit Disappointing

This book wasn't as good as the first two in the series.I wanted to like it more than I did, because I really enjoyed the first two books.

It dragged a bit. By the time the mystery is solved, it's a bit anticlimactic; I just wanted to finish it up.

Falco's snarkiness was lacking. Only one of the supporting characters, Philadelphian, was particularly interesting.

The narrator did a decent, if unremarkable, job.

Not the Falco of old

I read the Falco books when they first came out - and I was hooked. But over the years they have deteriorated badly. Occasionally, there is a winner (such as Saturnalia), but more and more, they are bogged down in interminable history lessons (and I was a Classics major, so I enjoy historical detail). But when Helena is opening her mouth every 5 lines to deliver 2 pages on a particular esoteric detail, it's just too much. The author also confuses matters by having dozens of characters (suspects) not one of whom is developed. It was a chore listening to this book.

Falco can't catch a break, love this series

Falco goes to Alexandria for vacation with pregnant wife Helena and his two young daughters, and his adopted teenage daughter. What was supposed to be pleasure trip turns into WORK for Falco. He has to solve murders, and the more he finds the dirtier everything gets. But you know Falco and his wonderful wife Helena will work it out. Great series.

My first Lyndsey Davis novel

I had read a short story about Marcus Falco in a compendium of Historical Whodunits. I like the character and cast of characters created. This book has long been on my reading list as an excellent "locked door" mystery. It was a good story. Not the best mystery I've read. Two recurring characters of the series appear mid-way through to give character references for suspects. This seemed contrived - just an easy way to give answers where noodling through the problems would have been harder and taken longer. The end result of the average mystery, as opposed to the great story, was OK. Not fully satisfying to me.

Ok listen overall.

I love books about ancient times told through the eyes of the main character of the story. This books did this for the most part, except the story got lost occassionally in the main character's internal dialouge. Very detailed in descriptions of places and settings. Loved it a lot. Wished it moved faster, though.

Pickle jokes and a murdered Pickle Queen

This is the 12th book in the China Bayles series. China is dealing with a husband who has decided to become a PI and the daughter of her friend Ruby, who is pregnant and having challenges with her mother. When China finds out that her husband's first client is the Pickle Queen, the pickle jokes begin and continue throughout the book. Although China has vowed not to become involved with the case, when the Pickle Queen (aka Phoebe Morgan, head of the PickleFest committee and owner of the pickling plant) turns up dead, she ends up finding clues and working to solve the case. She is also working to reconcile Amy with her mother. Additionally, she and Ruby are trying to help their friend Sheila, the chief of police, solve a rash of mysterious burglaries that have resulted in a death. Included with the mysteries are several recipes revolving around pickling and dill. It was a more lighthearted story than some of her previous books and was quite enjoyable.

Some disappointment after so many years

I am wondering if Ms Alberts husband Bill wrote this one. It seems a lot edgier. A lot of comments about the male anatomy and innuendoes about President Bush--like throwing darts at his picture. It disturbs me so much when you follow a series for years and then after you have loved the characters for so long--the author goes political. WHY??

Interesting series good mystery love the setting

Great series! Love the characters and the little touches regarding the herbs and recipes.

Dilly does not disappoint

This series is one of my favorites and I love going back to the Texas hill country with each new installment of China Bayles' intrigues. I like getting reacquainted with China's friend and partner, Ruby. The other characters in the book don't disappoint either. Interesting facts about pickles and pickle making are included throughout the book, with recipes at the back. Ms. Wittig gives us well-written cozies with a modern flair.

Loved It

If you could sum up Keeping Watch in three words, what would they be?

Hero at large.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I enjoyed the plot as it was a continuation of "Folly" but also stood on it's own. The end did have me a bit concerned!

Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed both the history in Vietnam and the relationship between Allen and Jerry. True family devotion even when the years have gone by.

I enjoy many of Laurie R King's books, this series was one of them. She brings bravery and vulnerability to the table, often within the same character.

a bit much for me

I have been a fan of Laurie King, but this story was a little bit too over the top graphic for me. Yes, what war and trauma do to people has a profound effect on them... but there were places where it was traumatic just to listen to it. I liked the narrator, though... well presented story.

Excellent Read

The writing itself was excellent, I've read this and Folly seceral times over. Unfortunately the narrator lacked the range tobhandle all the characters and emotions in the book.

Powerful and unexpected

I have read nearly everything that Laurie King has published and this story is as powerful as her best and is very different from anything else I have read of hers.

The darker side

Good book!

Catholic killer.

Smokey and her team are called to Washington DC when a sadistc killer uses his Catholic faith as justification for a horrific killing spree. Parts of this book were very good but overall it was disjointed and not anywhere close to the writing caliber of the first two in the series. I sure hope the next one falls back into step. We are doing a buddy read and all of the people in the group had the same consensus but will also still be reading the next.

Storytelling at its best!

Fun story
