Instantly forgettable

I only finished this last week and I had to return to the book details to remind myself what it was about. Not a good sign.

I suppose if you're after a read that doesn't challenge you AT ALL then this is fit for purpose. Nevertheless, this doesn't make it any better than a 25p charity shop offering, though.

The narrator does an creditable job with relatively sub-standard material.

Just not very nice

I found this actually pretty horrid, it has some nasty bits with dead animals in it that I wished I'd known about before I brought it.

well-plotted and well-read

This book is the one in which Markby and his future wife Meredith first meet. It is a good story that keeps one wanting to listen. There are quite a few characters to remember, but they are brought alive by the writer and the excellent reading by Judith Boyd.

Fun and light

Another Super Bones Mystery

What a great addition to a wonderful series. If you like the cozy, you're in for a treat, a unique setting and voice combined with a mystery for you to solve. This series never fails to satisfy.

great fun

I enjoyed this book immensely. The main characters were fun. The rhetoric reminded me of how some of my girlfriends and I talk. The story line was good albeit a bit predictable. Worth the time to listen.

Southern Stereotypes meets Bad Writing

The narrator was good or I would not have been able to stick this one out.

Beside the heroine obsessing on her sad lovelife, the family ghost obsessing on the heroine's lovelife and the heroine's best friend and PI partner obsessing on her lovelife, the mystery doesn't have a lot of room. Luckily it is a very thin mystery.

There was also some factual errors that were just due to sloppy research. For instance, it's been decades since anyone has had to go to Sweden for a sexual reassignment operation.

Another great installment of this series. As always there was laughter and tears. Very enjoyable. Narrator was very good with the pace and different voices. I highly recommend this book.

Seek and You Will Find

What made the experience of listening to Dead Days of Summer the most enjoyable?

I truly enjoyed the story-line. First half of the book was very quick paced then second half slowed down to give details. Not bad.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The performance was good but I still have problems with the way certain characters are read. Some times that whinny is irritating.

Any additional comments?

I do think that this is a nice summer or even under the covers in winter read. You will enjoy it.

Typical sequel

This sequel to The Lion's Game is a typical sequel. No where near as good as the first. I would like to have given The Lion's game a 6/5 and this a 4/5. Still, a good book, glad I bought this to finish the story

Night Fall

I could not stop listening to this book, excellently read, it weaves a story that has a very dramatic conclusion. It touched my mind and my heart. I will listen to more of this author He is very exciting to listen to and the plot is very intelligent.

This is a must read to all.

Great story, comical (occasional) music

Listened to this one after The Panther and was pleased that although shorter the story was just as good. I was also pleased that the Panther didn't have the da-da-da-this-bit's-tension background music inflicted on it. Only comes up a few times in this book and while it doesn't spot things (I just found myself rolling my eyes) it's unnecessary. We know something is tense because the author and actor are good at their jobs. I still recommend the book and am ready to download another.

Simon Brett - always fun to listen to

These books are slightly on the silly side which is a nice change from the darker mysteries I often listen to. The plot is intriguing and the characters are interesting - the main characters are likable women who like to solve mysteries the police have trouble with. Lots of twists and turns kept me going until the end.

Luke warm about this one

I'm currently listening to this series. I enjoyed the first three books, but this one - not so much. Not bad, just not as good as it's predecessors. I'm finding Mr. Howard's habit of beginning a sentence with "a"... irritating. Example: "a...what do you think about that?" I doubt this is in the book! Also, his narration of the American professor (female) is awful! He makes her sound like a member of the mafia! I noticed that Mr. Howard does not narrate later books in this series. I can't help but wonder why?? I DO plan to continue the series, however.

Entertaining

This is an entertaining addition to the Fethering series. Jude and Carole do a splendid job of investigating a murder. There are more information and insights into Jude's private life. Carole does her best to put up a stiff upper lip and not pry into Jude's life. Worth the time effort and credit.

Jacqueline Winspear never disappoints

Would you consider the audio edition of Pardonable Lies to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version, but I love listening to stories. Jacqueline Winspear's narration is quite pleasing to me. So, in this case, I'd rather hear the story than read it. I find her stories to be intriguing as well as the storytelling itself.

What did you like best about this story?

I love her character, Maisie Dobbs. I find her to be credible, likeable, wise, intelligent, and also wounded. I've learned so much about WW1 from these novels. I had no idea of the effect that war had on England until I found this series of books.

What does Jacqueline Winspear bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I love hearing some stories more than reading them. I'm sure it has much to do with the narrator. I read as many books as I listen to. I like both formats, but I do prefer narration in some cases.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Oh, I don't know. I have a friend in LA who writes them for a living, but I'm not a tagline person.

No, just share with Ms. Winspear that her series is unique and that are characters are really likeable, I just love her books.

I missed something

I did not realize I was downloading the abridged version! OK, so that's my bad, and my review is probably going to reflect problems with the editing rather than problems with the book.

If you've seen the movie "Murder by Death," the various super sleuths who are invited to the mystery dinner all take a stab at solving the murder at the end.

Technical issues with this book

Ok story etc but it regularly jumped back to a number of places. Never had any problems like this with any other book.

It was very difficult to follow the stories as the each chapter was repeated back to back thus running time was over 12 hours but actual story length was just over 6!

Repeated chapters are very annoying.

I am astonished that no one has withdrawn this book given the error in publication and the previous reviewers stating that the chapters are repeated. I bought this hoping it had, but as it had not I have asked for a refund.

Half the story

Every chapter of this book is duplicated, so the advertised length of this product is wrong. Also, having to skip every other chapter is annoying.

Satisfying Read

I have read some of the Joanna Brady series books by J.A. Jance and although I enjoyed them, I found the characters a little too wooden. Although Day of the Dead seems to be an obvious attempt to recreate Tony Hillerman's works, that is fine with me. Although she uses so many characters it is hard to keep them straight for an audio listener, I thought her characterizations where much better than in previous works and the story seemed tighter. I do get a bit tired however of writers who always have children who are "straight A students," men who are "ruggedly handsome," or women who are so beautuful they put others "to shame." Although we know "who did it" from virtually the begining of the book, the enjoyment in this book is in the pursuit. I hope in her next book, she uses the geography of the southwest to greater effect. Hillerman does a much better job with that.

Big Plot

J A is a wonderful writer and very complete in her plots and detail. I have loved all of her books, but this one was too much. There was so much detail and so many characters that it was really hard to follow. I had so much to remember before the primary plot that I was worn out by the time I was suppose to get in to the ending. This was a good story with too much detail to handle.

Disappointed

I eagerly anticipated listening to this book. I like this author's skill in painting pictures with words, development of a good mystery and a suspenseful finish. I found myself annoyed with this work because of excessive use of "political correctness" (white guys bad, Indians good) and the implied assumption throughout the book that only "indigenous" people have connection to the spiritual and mystical. I remind the author that all people are indigenous to somewhere, and that many cultures, including the Celts, have a strong tradition of connection to the mystic as well as embracing medical science. In that same vein, the gratuitous denigration of physicians in the Indian Health Service is a real slap in the face to the thousands of physicians of all ethnic backgrounds who have dedicated years of their lives to providing the best care possible to their patients in a bureaucratic system that often impedes their efforts, rather than enhancing them.
