But after accidentally breaking the most popular girl in school's nose, and discovering the cheerleaders all hate her, she starts having second thoughts. Is it too much to ask to land a spot on the team, win the heart of her dreamy crush and make tons of new friends? I love this whole series I think it's funny and witty
    Non-blonde fit the bill
This book was in great shape and hardbound. I was a little unhappy that there were cuss words in it, though, as I bought it for a student to read who is a cheerleader.
    book
The book arrived on time and in good condition! Granddaughter loved the book! As long as she reads it I will purchase more books! Thanks
Good book, part of a good series. Fun, young adult reading.
I like to read series and this was part of a 3 book series. It was an easy, fun read. Sometimes, I just need to read something that's not serious or morbid. This book was just what I needed at the time.
    Good stuff
Our main heroine is new to the school and to the cheerleading squad. She also happens to be one of the only students who is not blonde in this Florida high school.
This book starts off with a bang. By introducing the lead character into a new school, full of "Britney Spears" wannabes. You can actually imagine Annissa, short haired AND brunette (how dare she) trying to figure out how she is going to survive her year at the new school.
She is pitted against these wannabes who are determined to make her life as difficult as possible. On top of all that, they are part of the cheerleading squad that Annissa wants to join.
What ensues is a bunch of exchanges between the parties and funny (sometimes not so funny) events and overall a great storyline.
Mind you, the storyline has been DONE before, but it is well written and fun to read.
I was really into it until about 3/4 of the book when things get horribly mushy and extremely predictable. This, I did not care for so much. The author could have made the ending a tad less predictable. Which would have added more depth to the book.
Otherwise, it was a great read.

A great listen, if not great literature
Mark Childress has written one exceptional novel (Tender) and several good reads of varying quality. One Mississippi works well for me as a great listen, an almost ideal audiobook if you find appealing an easy-to-absorb, engaging, sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, often over-the-top coming of age story. It features a cast of lively characters, some rendered with depth and striking originality, and all aided by a narrator whose diverse voices become more winning and convincing as the story unfolds.
The story has some unusual and original conceits and flourishes, but overall I enjoyed the entertainment too much to question the unevenness and improbabilities that may bother other listeners. The climatic scene, I'm sure, will be rightly criticized as derivative, out of place in a story set in early 1970s Mississippi, unbelievable and maybe a cheap shot. I still did not want the story to end, and loved the parting image of a sky blue Pinto rocketing down the highway into the Mississippi night.
    Dragged on and on
I purchased this because of the reviews, but I thought it dragged on and on. I finished it, but kept checking my iPod to see how much more time was left. I'm really surprised by all the great reviews. It was just an average story in which the author took way too much time discussing characters and their issues - all of which meant nothing in the end.
    5 Stars
This book was one of the best books I have had the pleasure of listening to in a while. The narrator did an excellent job of the southern accent. There is nothing worse than a botched southern accent in an audiobook. It is easy to listen to and hard to turn off. I was sad when it was over. Like I lost a friend... :)
Different kind of book for me
This book was quite interesting as I don't usually read books written for teens. Jeff Woodman is my favorite narrator and I find any book that he narrates wonderful. Once again he brought me into the story by making me able to visualize each character and watch their part of the book unfold
    good book, excellent narrator
This was a good audible-- the narrator was wonderful. Started out very light and brought back memories as the era of the book was the same as my high school years. Well done characters. The end was not what I was expecting and the themes were different from what I expected but the book was very well done.

But Francesca had not counted on the fierce loyalty of her new friends, or falling in love, or finding that it's within her power to bring her family back together.
    Editorial Reviews:
Teenage Francesca is having a tough time at her new high school, which has only recently started accepting girls, and things only get worse when her normally high-spirited mother has a depressive breakdown. Performer Rebecca Macauley does an excellent job capturing Francesca's struggles with just the right mix of plaintiveness and sass, and acclaimed Australian author Rebecca Macauley resists the temptation to tie everything up in a perfect bow. This is a well-written and immersive tale that provides a thoughtful meditation on themes of belonging, family, and identity.
    Critic Reviews:
"A rich exploration of maturation, identity, family, and friendship." (The Bulletin)

An all-time favorite story, writer, and narrator.
The only book that competes with this one is its sequel, The Piper's Son. A true masterpiece, as with all Marchetta's works.
    Saving Francesca
Loved it! couldn't put it down. really relatible characters. I adored Francesca and her group of friends.
    Perfect
    Any additional comments?
The emotional and authentic story of a teen girl dealing with her mother's depression - and her own issues - with lovely narration by Macauley.
    Great listen!
Where does Saving Francesca rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
One of my favorites. Great narrator, and a story that I thought I would like, but ended up loving.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I really liked a lot of the secondary characters. Tara, Justine, Jimmy, Tom.
Best Book I've "Read" All Year
What a fabulous and well-written story! I have discovered a wonderful new YA author.
Not just for teens, this story is funny, poignant and speaks deeply about the struggle of growing up with a depressed parent. I loved the true-to-life evocation of the teens, and the story-telling voice was spot-on. For anyone 13 and up, I would say.
    (Great narrator, too!)

    Genres: Teens, Romance & Friendship
    Publisher's Summary:
In the summer before his senior year begins, Sammy falls in love with Juliana, a girl whose tough veneer disguises a world of hurt. By summer's end, Juliana is dead. Sammy grieves; the memory of Juliana becomes his guide through the difficult year ahead. Sammy is a smart kid, but he's angry. He's angry about Juliana's death, he's angry about the poverty his father and his sister must endure, he's angry at his high school and its thinly disguised gringo racism, and he's angry he might not be able to go to college.
Benjamin Alire Saenz, evoking the bittersweet ambience found in such novels as McMurtry's The Last Picture Show, captures the essence of what it meant to grow up Chicano in small-town America in the late 1960s.

    Powerful
This book is amazingly heartbreaking and powerful. I'm not one who usually gets teary eyed over anything, but the performance Robert Ramirez gave is truly something beautiful as is the writing and composition. 5*****

    That Narration Though...
The book has a wonderful storyline for teens, but the narration failed to capture the characters' personalities at times. I don't mind when a narrator doesn't want to do voices for each character. But Carine goes back and forth between doing a different voice and not doing a different voice for some characters. It was frustrating in the sense that I couldn't listen to this book and do anything else, because I had to concentrate more to figure out who was talking at times. I had to rewind the book to replay some parts, because where one character was previously pretrade by a certain voice, suddenly their speaking lines were just Carine reading. Oh well. Still a good story.

    Good Teen Story, Terrible Narrator
What did you love best about Telling Christina Goodbye?
It's a good story for teens who are struggling with this issue, or just to gain some sympathy
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Most interesting... probably the concept of a jealous boyfriend, and a girlfriend who doesn't have a chance to leave him behind. The coma is interesting too. Least interesting... Honestly the narrator makes it way less interesting.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ashley Albert?
Someone like Ali Ahn.. Someone who can sound young, and can do all the voices (she can do a variety of female and male voices that all sound different) and put the proper emotion in. Ashley Albert is just too monotone and alternates between nasaly and throaty to give variety to the voices--everyone basically sounds the same, or they sound monotone and unemotional, or just very juvenile. Drives me crazy.

    Members Reviews:
Great Idea and Narration. Terrible writing.
Would you try another book from Margaret Stohl and/or Therese Plummer?
I would try Therese Plummer again. I won't be reading the next in the series.
What do you think your next listen will be?
After this book, I listened to Dangerous Creatures by Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia. Then I read Unbreakable by Kami Garcia.
What does Therese Plummer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I don't think she brought anything extra, but I enjoyed her voice.
What character would you cut from Icons?
All of them. They were awful, one-dimensional, and poorly fleshed-out. They were like cardboard cut outs whose actions betrayed none of the emotions the author told us they were having.
    Any additional comments?
The story itself was so rushed that it felt like a bad movie adaptation of a good book, only this was the book. At least if they make it into a movie, there's really nothing here to cut out or rush. Honestly, I've never returned an Audible book, but I'm tempted to return this one.
    awesome
loved it even better the second time.
if I have to complain about anything it's that, like if I were watching a TV show I'd say 'why put those two together? the chemistry just isn't there". I didn't get the feeling he liked her until the end, nor her liking him enough to chose him (purposely did not include names so no giveaways)
    Terrible Ending!
Would you listen to Icons again? Why?
I LOVED "Icons" and "Idols" until I got to the ending of the latter. I hope there is another book coming out in this series and that wasn't the ending!

Not in love with the story. Should have stayed as standalone. Really enjoyed the audio performance esp Magonia!
    Another Spellbinding Listen
Who knew that voice acting could have so much feeling? Both narrators, Therese Plummer and Michael Crouch were amazing. It took me a couple chapters in before I remembered everything from the last book and was hooked just like before. This is one of those rare books that you want to recommend to everyone. This world Maria Dahvana Headley created is amazing as always. The imagery is just too beautiful and irresistible that I know this one will make it to the bookshelf. Well worth a credit.

Skylar Rome is supposed to be having the best summer ever before she heads off to college. Little did she know that her whole life was about to change while visiting her cousin. One of the Grand brothers she'd, Mason, saves her life right after meeting her when she nearly drowns at the beach due to unknown forces. Though she knows he is the type of guy good girls stayed away from, it seems he is always saving her life - and the attraction was inevitable.
Strange things begin to happen after she meets the brothers. When she accidentally kills one of the brothers, it throws her life into turmoil as they search to find the answers. Implausibly, she gets caught up in a world of the descendants of ancient gods who have super powers. Not only is her discovery difficult to accept, but evil beings are after her. interesting blend of old and new supernatural
    Any additional comments?
(I received a free audible copy in exchange for an honest review.)
Wanna know something interesting? This book was on my wish/to-be-read list for a while. Andthencame the exchange. That usually never happens. I mean, the first time I even hear about the books get for free in exchange for an honest review is when the opportunity comes to do the review. The normal ritual is to read only the summary, ignore any reviews and make up my own mind without influence.
That so did not happen here. Id already read the summary, skimmed the reviews (good and bad) and made up my mind to read it someday. This one, I knew, was right up my alley from the start so it already had a tiny bias before I even pressed play.
So how to do an unbiased review? I put it aside to listen to after a couple of other books so that nothing except the summary would be fresh in my mind. I curled up on my front porch after dark, which is my favorite time and place to listen. Then I pressed play.
Sometimes I think that characters are created to be perfectly oblivious, never able to connect the dots. So its with a bit of frustration that I listened to the first few chapters. I mean really, aside from those stories set in entirely different universes, we have such a broad range of movies, books and even songs that tell a story and teach a lesson. How can the main character of a book never put on her big girl panties and confront the questions she has in her head full on?
Skylar never seems to ask the right questions at the right time. Shes supposed to be strong and independent, but really she just kind of peters outat various points of the story.
Now, having said that, there are moments where I just wanna cheer her on. And sometimes I have to set aside my assumptions. Just because I would react a certain way to certain circumstances, does not mean the character would react the same way. (This is something I sometimes have to smack into my head while Im reading a particularly frustrating heroine.

These souls can time-travel, raise the dead, possess another's mind and, his least favorite these days, tell the future. The forecast for Aden? Love it!
This is a great book. The nararator is wonderful, if you think it starts off slow, just give it a chance. I was very pleased overall and can't wait for another! If you like other Gena Showalter books, you will not be disappointed.
    Incomplete series
I really like the series. The first book was pretty good and it made you want to get the second book. and the second book kept you interested in till the 3rd book came along. But the problem that I'm having is I feel that I'm outgrowing this series before the fourth book is produced. That is the only problem when the next book in a series is not written. the last book came out in 2011 and by the time the next one comes out I fear I might have outgrown the series and the characters. I feel that the characters are getting younger while I'm getting older although they are still the same age. I hope that the next book comes out soon or at least in the next year
    another amazing story
I loved this book. Gena always knows how to pull you into a world and make you get lost and this book was no different.
    Unraveled
What did you love best about Unraveled?
Not bad I liked the book
Which character as performed by Jessica Almasy was your favorite?
Riley is my favorite. He just oozes dangerous and sex
    Mind Boggling!
Gena Showalter has yet to write a book that I didn't like, and this one held true to that. How any author's imagination can conjure up such amazing, deeply intriguing characters is beyond me---mind boggling to be exact. I must admit, however, that Initially the story was confusing for me; the many different characters introduced too haphazardly. And the narrator's voice grated my nerves. She sounded like a spoiled high school girl with an "I'm better than you are" attitude. She put too much feminine emotion into practically every word which did the male characters a true injustice, toning down their verocity and manliness (at least as much verocity and manliness you can expect from high school aged young men---boys??). Fortunately, there was enough going on with the constant twists and turns of the story to keep me captively engaged in spite of the narrator. I HAD TO KNOW HOW THINGS WERE GOING TO TURN OUT! The ending was not quite as I hoped because it left me still wondering how the heros and heroins of the story would ultimately fair. But to the author's credit, the ending piqued my curiousity enough to ensure I would purchase and read the next book.
