New Twist on Vapire Sci-Fi

This is not just your standard True Blood or Twilight-type vampire story. I thought there was an interesting twist in this one, despite being another vampire love story with a female main character. It wasn't the best story I've ever listened to, but it was good enough that I will probably continue with the rest of the series when it is available.

Aurora, the main character, is involved in a near fatal accident that nearly kills her. She discovers that a secret government agency offers to save her (with millions of dollars in treatments) in exchange for her continued service to the country by hunting and killing vampires. Her mother accepts, essentially leaving her indebted for the rest of her life.

Aurora's is told that her rare blood type allows her to carry the vampire virus with significant modifications that make her a weapon against vampires. When they drink her weaponized blood, they are temporarily incapacitated allowing her to kill them. The down side is that she could turn into a vampire if she doesn't receive periodic injections.

She is forced to kill a zombie-like, violent vampire during her agency initiation, but she soon discovers that not all vampires are alike. The boy she has long had a crush on, who is finally showing an interest in her, turns out to be a vampire himself. How can she possibly kill him when he is nothing like the violent killer he is supposed to be?

Narration was pretty good in this book. Overall I give it 4 stars and will probably continue with the series.

I really liked Em Eldridge as a narrator. She brought life to the story which is important with paranormal books to me.

I liked this book. It was just the right length and I enjoyed the time spent. It ends on a cliffhanger but I'm excited to listen to the next book.

First things first, I have to say that I loved the twist the author put on the Vampire Hunter!! I loved that it's her blood that is toxic and she isn't a "special" girl.

Return to Paradise

As soon as I finished Leaving Paradise, I was anxious to read Return to Paradise. This is a story of growth, sacrifice, and acceptance. One event and one choice can change the trajectory of so many lives. Caleb made a choice to protect the one person he always had protected without foreseeing the consequences. A year later he is faced with those consequences. One being Maggie his neighbor who was forever injured on the night of the accident that changed everything. Unable to deal with the consequences of his choice, Caleb leaves Paradise and Maggie behind. Fate gives them a second chance. They fight, but ultimately truth and love have the ultimate say. The question is, is it too late to make up for every ill-advised choice.

The supporting characters emphasized this plot. I wish Caleb's ex-girlfriend would have been mentioned, but ignored. The plots with her do not add to the overall story and she seems contrived.

Pure Imagination Reviews

I'm a huge Simone Elkeles fan. HUGE! So, I was extremely excited for Return to Paradise, because let's face it, Leaving Paradise really left us hanging. I was so anxious to read what was going to happen with Caleb and Maggie! I knew it wouldn't be easy for them. No, Elkeles is the queen of drama! Nothing is ever easy for her characters. Even knowing that this book left me the tiniest bit disappointed.

Return to Paradise picks up 8 months after the first book. Caleb and Maggie are thrown together by extenuating circumstances and forced to spend a month together on the road discussing their accident with other teens. Maggie and Caleb were the same Maggie and Caleb as in the first book. Always at odds with each other. Always having conflicting emotions. I was rooting for them the entire time! I kept thinking 'It's not that hard!! Just try!' Because they made things much harder than they had to be.

Dangling ending

Ann Brashares has a knack for weaving an enthralling story, only to have the ending left dangling for the reader, and The Here and Now is no exception. There are too many questions left unanswered at the end of the book, but otherwise, an enjoyable read. I'm giving it 5 stars, because sometimes I think unanswered questions are a good thing, my own feelings of frustration not withstanding.

Captivating

Great character driven story. Interesting plot- not very dramatic but comfortably paced. Emily Rankin did a great job performing and narrating it. Good pacing. Time well spent.

Good, cries out for a sequel

I rushed through this book, and though some of it was predictable, it was different enough to keep me interested. The performance was great, and for the most part the story was too, I just wish the ending was a bit more conclusive. Because of the way it does end, it seems like the author is setting up for a sequel, but I don't think she is.

I enjoyed the story and the characters. It's not what I would typically read but I'm glad I branched out and tried it. I wasn't disappointed.

I was a little disappointed at the ending as I was really hoping to be able to see Prenna and Ethan finally be intimate and end up together and it just left me wondering.

A Tour de Force

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely - especially to anyone who loves Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. But whether you're familiar with the play or not, this story fills in a lot of the background characters and provides more info on their motivation and their actions.

What other book might you compare Prince of Shadows to and why?

None comes to mind. I've tried some of the books that attempt to expand on Jane Austen's novels, but so far I haven't found any as well done as this one.

Have you listened to any of Kyle McCarleys other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first hearing of a book read by Kyle McCarley, but I've listened to samples from some of the other books he reads on audible and I'm impressed by how versatile he is. I'll definitely check these out. He does a great job of bringing the other characters to life and his gift for accents is wonderful.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Every time the author wove dialogue from the play into the story, it was so fluid that I had to remind myself that it was from the play.

I am recommending this book to my aunt, with whom I have a shared affection for Shakespeare's plays. The blend of story and reader in this audiobook is superb. I'll listen to it again.

a great twist on the Romeo & Juliet story

loved how the story used William Shakespeare's lines and incorporated them into a different storyline. The author's voice completely drew me into Benvolio Montegue's head. Recommend!

An Amazing Satisfying Story

My first experience with this story is through the audio version. I do plan on purchasing both books for my collection.

It was my own misunderstanding but up until a forth through the book did I realize this world was the result of the actions of the first story creating an alternate universe. Upon accepting that idea I thoroughly enjoy every moments and creativity that went into this wonderful story.

Gothic mystery gets a dystopian sequel

I was so happy to be back at Amber House, and couldn't figure out why the protagonist, Sarah, was so bummed about moving in until it's revealed that everything is taking place in a different and far more dangerous alternate reality, caused by Sarah's actions in the climax of the first book.

I was a bit frustrated with Sarah at points because the Nazis won WWII and it seems pretty obvious, to the reader at least, that it's Sarah's fault or Sarah's duty to fix. But she digs her heels in at times and wonders if changing time AGAIN won't just make things even worse. A looming international threat, however, finally gets her moving.

I fell fast...

just like these two did. I don't care that their relationship is a tiny bit ridiculous and just a smidgen unrealistic. I love Katie McGarry she has a way of writing a romance that really cuts pretty deep especially for a couple of 17 year olds.

I love that her characters are always so complex and miss-understood, and we are allowed a rare look into the heart of people who hide for a living. Every time I start one of her books I can't stop until I have devoured the whole thing.

Please tell me there will be more... and who will we hear from next Abby?!?!

Yes, I would recommend this audio to anyone who has read any of Katie McGarry's other books. This one was a really good read/listen.

I though this was another good one by Katie McGarry. She writes really good NA books that keep you engrossed the entire time.

Male and Female Narrators

What made the experience of listening to Crash into You the most enjoyable?

There are both Male and Female narrators, since the story is written in both male and female POV. However, when the chapter is for the male, he does the voices of the girl when speaking, same thing for when it is the females chapter, she does the voice for the boy, it is not a dialogue between the two narrators. But overall, it is preferable vs.

The Perfect Sister

Loann doesn't like herself. She'd rather be like her sister, Claire. She wants Claire's looks, her popularity and maybe even her boyfriend, Josh.

The synopsis mentions betrayal. I did not see betrayal. I saw a teenage girl so in need of attention that she wasn't thinking at all. Loann was self-conscious, insecure and she had a serious case of low self-esteem (I blame her parents for that), but she didn't always let her fear keep her from speaking up when necessary. She was stronger than she thought she was.

It didn't take long to figure out what was going on with Claire. I wanted to know what was going to happen with her, but I was more interested in Marcus. What was going on in his personal life that he didn't want to tell? Wanting the answer to this question is what kept me reading. And then once I knew, I kept reading to see what Marcus was going to do next and how his relationship with Loann was going to turn out.

I liked this story from the beginning, even though it moved at a slow pace and took a while to pick up. Jaden did a good job of capturing the nervousness and awkwardness a teenage girl experiences when she doesn't know if a guy likes her or not. The author also tackles eating disorders and domestic abuse realistically. Her story gives teenage girls important things to think about concerning popularity, body image and premarital sex. It also has a lesson for parents who favor one child over another. As the author shows, it can cause serious issues in the life of the 'favorite' as well as the one who doesn't get enough attention.

Favorite Character: Marcus

Favorite Line (sad, but says it all): Claire would always overshadow me. My life wasn't as important as hers.

Hobbitsies Reviews: Compelling and heartbreaking story

I loved Denise Jaden's first book, Losing Faith, but Denise Jaden has grown so much as a writer with Never Enough. Never Enough was so well written and so heartbreaking in a brilliant way.

First of all - the family dynamic. The family in Never Enough was so screwed up and broken, but I could tell they all loved each other and just didn't know how to come together as a family to deal with Claire's eating disorder. Like with Losing Faith, Denise Jaden was really able to spotlight how differently people handle tough situations.

And Denise Jaden did such an amazing job portraying Claire's eating disorder.

Cliffhanger

Waste of my time. The story was geared to adolescents, not adults. Narrators were very good . The spoiler, adding insult to injury, was that it ended in a cliffhanger (which makes my blood boil). Write the entire story on or don't write at all.

Can't wait for it to continue!!

I have a love/hate relationship with HM Ward, okay I love her books but the cliffhangers and leaving me waiting thing kills me. We get to see the early life of Tristan, can't wait for him to grow up so we can see more. In later life he is Jonathan Ferro's best friend, this book just gives us a quick view of his highschool life and how it all started. I like his character a lot, both of them. Can't wait to see Tristan and Mari in the future.

Loved this book and I can't wait for the next book in the series to be released on audible :-)
