                • 08: Is Your Environment Affecting Your Family? with Barry Smeltzer, MPAS PA-C

                  • Barry recognizes we are creating an environment that causes us to be susceptible to deficiencies, disease, and illness.

                  • There so much in our current environment from an exposure standpoint that can affect our health, that just didn't exist years ago. We have to be actively addressing this exposure to maintain our health. Today, more than 50% of children in public school has a health condition requiring medication.
                  • Managing illness is not health, and education is critically important. Do your own research through the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org). The EWG is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. They are the chemical experts for the Environmental Medicine Academy.
                  • Barry shares why the state of Hawaii has outlawed sunscreen, and why this should concern us, too. The EWG publishes a safe sunscreen recommendation along with many other EWG verified products which are free from the EWG's chemicals of concern.
                  • Barry helps us understand the effects of vitamin D deficiency, especially in children, and how we can counteract this.
                  • Barry touches on electromagnetic fields (EMF) and how can we decrease exposure - especially in kids who are still developing.
                  • EMF is a high level of pollution. We don't yet know the long term effect because EMF hasn't been out that long. Being diligent and reasonable regarding EMF is tough because we can't see or feel EMF like we see or smell smoke and other pollution.
                  • Barry recognizes we are creating an environment that causes us to be susceptible to deficiencies, disease, and illness. He feels our country is at risk of an epidemic which will affect everyone because we are not prepared from a health standpoint to fight something that will affect the entire population.
                  • The best thing for parents and concerned individuals to do is to go out and learn. Educate yourselves, but be careful because a lot of available information is unfiltered.
                  • This is where medical professionals should come in. They should acknowledge that people will be seeking information and team up with them, listen to them, and guide them in the right direction.
                  • Barry shares his perspective on vaccinations. He's not against vaccinations but hopes we move toward ensuring they are safe for all. Parents should educate themselves on the risks involved in every choice - to vaccinate or not.
                  • Barry urges us to create a lifestyle that leads to better health, and then live that lifestyle. Lead by example - your kids look at what you're doing and follow.

                • 07: Dr. Nisha Chellam, MD - Creating Health Not Managing Disease

                  Actionable Steps

                  1. Take responsibility - don't walk into doctor's office saying "I'm really scared because my mom, or grandma, aunt, or other family member...has history of breast cancer or other disease, and I'm going to get it too." Instead, discuss with physician that you have a strong history of that disease. Partner with your doctor, ask to be educated in how you can prevent or minimize the likelihood of getting that disease. You can take ownership and help create your health.
                  2. How you do one thing in life is how you do everything in life. Remember self-care. If you don't take care of the external you, you probably aren't taking care of the internal you.
                  3. If you feel there is power in a pill, think of the power in your food. Focus on plant based nutrition. The source of energy on earth is the sun. The only organism on earth that can capture the energy of the sun are plants through photosynthesis.
                  4. Bonus: Dr. Chellam's nutritional recommendations for health and longevity:

                    1. She does not advocate one specific eating plan, but she focuses on individual hard wiring, environmental-metabolic profile, and personal desires so it can be sustainable.
                    2. She does believe that our micro biome benefits from a high fiber -plant rich- whole food diet.
                    3. Eliminate processed foods.
                    4. Episode notes:

                      • Dr. Chellam shares what caused her to transition from internal medicine to functional medicine where she treats patients as a whole.
                      • Rather than treating the symptoms, she partners with patients using a science based approach to understand not only the disease but the person experiencing the disease.
                      • We need to stop normalizing inadequate health and focus on creation of health and wellness rather than management of disease.
                      • Take ownership of your health.
                      • Seek out a physician who will educate you and partner with you.
                      • Functional medicine focuses on getting the body to function normally again.
                      • What does your body need in order to heal?
                      • What does your body need to remove in order to heal?
                      • You need to create in your body the right environment for healing to occur.
                      • Dr. Chellam's goal is to get her patients to optimal health & well-being no matter where they are. Engage them in their own health.

                        • Josh and Dr. E discuss The Power of Not Now as a tool to free up mental bandwidth and focus on what’s important right now.
                        • You can do anything in life, as soon as you accept that you can’t do everything.
                        • The importance of “creating margins” in your life and getting in the habit of reevaluating your life’s course regularly.
                        • It’s imperative to slow down in order to take in all the information we require to make life-changing decisions. If we’re constantly going at full-speed, we miss the details and can only focus on what’s immediately in front of us.
