Growing Up in New York and Finding Optometry

Dr. Compton’s early life was a blend of Caribbean heritage and New York hustle. Born to parents from Jamaica and Barbados, he was raised in communities rich with cultural diversity. While his surname might suggest Los Angeles, his heart and identity belong to New York. His immersion into Dominican culture began in college, driven partly by community connections—and later solidified when he met his Dominican wife.

His introduction to optometry was unconventional. While working at his uncle’s optical shop, Dr. Compton observed a young optometrist who balanced professional life with personal freedom. That moment sparked the realization that optometry could be both rewarding and dynamic.

Building an Optometry Career with Purpose

After completing his degree at SUNY College of Optometry and residency, Dr. Compton spent the early years of his career filling in at various practices. A temporary position at an OD-MD practice eventually became an eight-year tenure. This time was formative, giving him deep clinical experience and exposure to high-level optometry practice management.

When it became clear that his long-term vision required autonomy, he opened Compton Eye Associates. The road wasn’t smooth—there were expansions to three locations, setbacks during COVID-19, and lessons in balancing ambition with sustainability. As Dr. Compton notes, “People see the wins, but they don’t always see the grind behind them.”

Lessons in Optometry Practice Management

Dr. Compton is candid about the realities of running a practice. While success brings opportunities, it also comes with constant problem-solving—whether it’s staffing challenges, patient flow, or insurance complexities. His advice to new graduates:

  • Expect a learning curve — your first job won’t be your last.
  • Avoid unrealistic comparisons — social media shows the highlight reel, not the behind-the-scenes struggles.
  • Focus on longevity — build systems that support both professional and personal life.
  • Passion for Contact Lens Specialty

One of the defining elements of Dr. Compton’s optometry career journey is his expertise in contact lens specialty care. His interest began while covering for a colleague and grew through mentorship and collaboration with industry peers. Today, his practice offers advanced solutions such as scleral lenses and custom designs for irregular corneas—life-changing interventions for many patients.

He describes the emotional impact of this work: “When you fit a specialty lens and a patient tears up because they can see clearly for the first time in years—that’s powerful.” In New York City, he estimates only a handful of optometrists are delivering this level of specialty care, making his role all the more critical.

    Embracing Teaching and Mentorship

Dr. Compton’s office is also a training ground for externs, optometric technicians, and residents. He believes his own challenges as a student help him connect with learners. Rather than simply supervising, he encourages them to present cases, develop treatment plans, and educate patients directly. This approach not only sharpens clinical skills but also builds confidence for future practice.

    Leveraging Media for Patient Education

One unique aspect of Dr. Compton’s practice is his weekly television segment on a Dominican news channel. Broadcast locally and in the Dominican Republic, the five-to-seven-minute segments cover topics from glaucoma to cataracts and reach a loyal audience. Many new patients seek him out after seeing these broadcasts, demonstrating the value of consistent, culturally relevant outreach.

    Advocacy and Service in Optometry

Service is a cornerstone of Dr. Compton’s professional philosophy. He actively supports the American Optometric Association (AOA) and encourages others to do the same. His reasoning is simple: protecting and advancing the profession benefits every practitioner, every patient, and ultimately, the communities served.

    Diversifying Career Paths in Optometry

Beyond the exam lane, Dr. Compton is a respected Key Opinion Leader (KOL), lecturer, and writer. His work with major industry partners allows him to share new products and techniques with colleagues nationwide. He emphasizes the importance of credibility—only aligning with companies and initiatives that match his values and deliver proven patient benefits.

Dr. Jason Compton’s optometry career journey demonstrates that success in this profession comes from persistence, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous growth. From managing a thriving private practice to pioneering in contact lens specialty care and giving back through teaching and advocacy, his story is a blueprint for building both a fulfilling career and a lasting legacy. For eye care professionals at any stage, his example reinforces that the path to impact is built on service, relationships, and a relentless focus on excellence.
