Michael Regilio, a super smart, HILARIOUS, LA comic, was on DLG about a year ago. We learned quite a bit about his background which includes him having to wear an eyepatch as a child.

Since that time Michaels career as a comedian has really accelerated and he stopped by the Radio Free Brooklyn Studios while he's in NYC performing. See him while he's in NYC HERE. Recently Michael was hired by the Jordon Harbinger podcast to research and co-host his featured Sunday show-Skeptical Sundays. The most recent episode (hasn’t even aired yet) that he’s researched is about the use of pornography. Did you know that there’s a rising (pardon the pun) problem with young men who can no longer get erections with actual women? And the younger they start the harder it is to get their brains rewired so they can have sex without porn.

Michael is an amazing LA comic here for a week of shows in NYC. His presence is a delight on stage but its his writing that supreme -extremely smart and original.

We learn that Regilio has had a problem seeing out of one eye since birth and had to wear an eyepatch until around the age of 7. He grew up in a strict Catholic household where he was the king of outsiders in school. You'll have to listen, but there's so many crazy hijinks that happened because his school decided he was gay (he's not-though he is a sincere, hearty ally) and told his parents. How do you manage to have such a healthy, mature relationship with your girlfriend Rini? Does your use of psychedelics help you with understanding yourself and does it help with this?

Your relationship with language seems like the medium you use for your art (comedy). How did your specific relationship with language come into being?

Since the last time we spoke on air was during the pandemic—curious to know what effect the pandemic had for you, especially as a touring comic.

LINDSAY GOLDWERT explores thoughtfully. She's in touch with her feelings, thoughts and creative impulses where her talent drives her to accomplish and explore. And her achievements are as much a bi-product of her intentions, not simply her goals. She is currently the Content/Editorial Director for Adulted Magazine, A wellness magazine for actual grown-ups—a career which she loves.

It wasn't a straight line for Lindsay, there was a career in journalism, a book: BOW DOWN Lessons from Dominatrixes on how to get everything you want. Her book talks about a world where the usual power dynamic is turned on its head. Where women not only stop apologizing, but seize—and enjoy—control. Lindsay really went behind the scenes and got to know the culture—so interesting to hear her take on it.

She also talked about a turning point in her life where she became a comedian. We talk in detail about this too. Her husband has been by her side for most of this, so it really rounds out our session to hear about how her life integrated whatever she threw at it to get to the place she's happy to be in today.

I saw David Mills perform in London a few months ago and I was blown away by his unusually incisive hilarious comedy and stage presence. I contacted the club in London that he had performed at and Voila! A few months later, he is in the studio and across the mic from me!!

I loved spending time with David on air and you will too. He's a very sharp, disciplined creative person, from a family of six kids, he was born in a small town in Pennsylvania. He had a salesman father—his family moved around A LOT. And church every Sunday—which can be conflicting for a young person who knows he's gay, As a professional comedian, David has lived in San Francisco to New York to London and now he's in town!. Because of his large family upbringing, David has really developed an independence and resilience that has allowed him to thrive in the crazy entertainment industry.

To understand Pablo and his work, you really need to listen to this episode of how he has evolved into the artist he's become. Pablo was born in 1971 in Mexico City to a family of classical musicians. His brother, 9 years older, was a poet and a philosopher. Pablo describes how his day to day, his brother was teaching him, opening his mind and having him read all this heavy philosophy shit at a young age. So while you were playing Nintendo, he was reading Nietzsche.

All of this powerful and unusual education helped create a precocious young man. When Pablo was still in his twenties, he was awarded a Creative Capital Grant to realize his project: School of Panamerican Unrest. The core of the project consisted of a traveling schoolhouse which made 30 stops between the U.S. state of Alaska and Chile's Antártica Chilena province between May and September 2006, following the entire length of the Pan-American Highway.

Pablo Helguera (Mexico City, 1971) is a New York based artist working with installation, sculpture, photography, drawing, socially engaged art and performance. Helguera’s work focuses in a variety of topics ranging from history, pedagogy, sociolinguistics, ethnography, memory and the absurd, in formats that are widely varied including the lecture, museum display strategies, musical performances and written fiction.

His work as an educator has usually intersected his interest as an artist. This intersection is best exemplified in his project, “The School of Panamerican Unrest”, a nomadic think-tank that physically crossed the continent by car from Anchorage, Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, making 40 stops in between. Covering almost 20,000 miles, it is considered one of the most extensive public art projects on record as well as a pioneering work for the new generation of artworks regarded under the area of socially engaged art.

Pablo Helguera performed individually at the Museum of Modern Art /Gramercy Theater, in 2003, where he showed his work “Parallel Lives”. His musical composition, “Endingness” has been performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Helguera has exhibited or performed at venues internationally too many to name…His work has been reviewed in …. Art in America, Artforum, The New York Times, ArtNews, amongst others. In 2008 he was awarded too many to name

Helguera has worked since 1991 in a variety of contemporary art museums, most recently as head of public programs at the Education department of the Guggenheim Museum in New York (1998-2005). From 2007 to 2020, he was Director of Adult and Academic programs at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He has organized close to 1000 public events in conjunction with nearly 100 exhibitions. In 2010 he was appointed pedagogical curator of the 8th Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre, Brazil, which took place in September, 2011. He is currently Assistant Professor of Arts and Entrepreneurship at the College of Performing Arts at the New School in New York.

He is represented by Kent Fine Art in New York and Enrique Guerrero Gallery in Mexico City.

He is the author of many books, including Education for Socially Engaged Art (2011) and The Parable Conference (2014).

He writes a weekly column titled Beautiful Eccentrics.

I've watch Colin's career quickly advance as I knew it would from the first time I saw his work, right after he landed in New York. Colin is queer, brilliant, funny and ADORABLE. He's very well liked as anyone could see at his recent opening and birthday party. Colin's porcelain sculptures are birthed from the world of modern dating with apps. Colin seems to have a healthy perspective on all of it. He's not invulnerable, but he is sensible. So this session is a great perspective on Colin's work and the very real relationship between one's life and one's art. He has had to learn to manage a chronic illness which I think has enabled him a deeper understanding of being a human in general. Colin has a very bright future - we talk about that too. Personally, I’m a HUGE FAN of the Brooklyn Comedy Collective in Williamsburg, so when, Philip Markel, the Founder and Artistic Director agreed to come in for a Dr. Lisa session, I was thrilled. 

Philip is the chilliest version of a Type A personality that I have met. He’s warm, welcoming, exuding a contagious sort of joy. The most obvious question in my mind was “How does he do it all?”, but our session went far past that simple question. Philip is a multitalented, (improv, singing, dancing, writing, teaching) creative person who is running a collective with 3 linked locations and a staff of 20 people, since 2018, all while doing his own work!

My take is Philip is that he is an unusual combo of talent, drive and business smarts. You don’t often meet people like him with this much talent and drive, establishing collectives for creative people, I think because most people that have that combo of skills go for the money. Comedy is not a get rich quick pursuit.

I read this autobiographical story that Philip had written for Medium before our interview and it lent some insight on Philip. It's helps illuminate where some of that leadership and fearlessness in his nature may led him to give us The Brooklyn Comedy Collective. Here’s just the very beginning of that story:

“Can I change?

I’ve been trapped by that question, in a loop I can’t break, most of my life.

I broke the loop once — my Senior Year of Catholic high-school, when I stood up during Mass and told a crowd of my classmates — and assorted nuns, deacon, and priest — that Jesus would want me to “Tell you all right now I’m gay.”

It was the most authentic moment of my life.”

BIO: Philip Markle has performed and produced in hundreds of shows and taught students internationally, from Berlin to Bali. Philip graduated from Northwestern University and trained in improv in Chicago at The Annoyance, iO, and Second City before moving to NYC in 2013 to launch The Annoyance Theater NY, where he acted as its Director for four years. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of The Brooklyn Comedy Collective in Williamsburg. I met comedian/writer/actress/super mom/wife Lana Siebel about 2 years ago when I started going to comedy open mics regularly. I honestly don't think I would have stuck with it without her. Lana is hugely talented but also a leader and a great example/inspiration for a creative in any field. We touch on Lana's journey as a Ukrainian refugee to America at age 7—for a deep dive into her experience of coming to the US—listen to an earlier episode with Lana HERE: Lana Siebels's life story is hard to imagine.

When I first met Lana, not long ago, she was just on the verge of transitioning from the pandemic into doing comedy full-time. In this episode we talk about how Lana is living her goal of performing comedy—on stage almost everyday!—as her job. It means driving/traveling to perform, going out every night to do her work and all that comes with it, while maintaining a close relationship with her growing son and her husband. I think the fact that her kid enjoys being funny and making videos with her helps. At this point Lana and I know each other pretty well so we have lots of laughs.
