Dr. Norwoods Gems

Listen Later

Dr. Kristie Norwood is a licensed Clinical Psychologist who currently serves as the Director of the Student Counseling Center at Hampton University. Dr. Norwood earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from James Madison University.  She later completed both her Master of Science in Counseling and Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from The University of Memphis. Prior to joining Hampton University, Dr. Norwood worked as the Assistant Chief of Psychology at the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  During that time, she served as the coordinator of the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder clinical team, coordinated efforts for the opening of the first Women’s Mental Health Clinic, and served as the Director of the Postdoctoral Training program.

Dr. Norwood joined Hampton University in August 2019 and has been instrumental in enhancing mental health services. In her clinical work, she provides individual and group therapy to college students.  Given her background working with military Veterans and now college students, Dr. Norwood’s clinical expertise is rooted in providing evidence based psychotherapy to trauma survivors and those dealing with life transitions.  In addition to her role with the Student Counseling Center, Dr. Norwood also serves as a Part Time Faculty Member in the Department of Psychology.

Most recently, Dr. Norwood was called to start a Limited Liability Company (LLC) entitled ReMIND U.  ReMIND U is an initiative that stands for Remembering to Keep Mental Health in Discussions.  Through ReMIND U, Dr. Norwood offers educational workshops, speaking engagements, and the ReMIND U podcast.  Her ultimate goal is to help normalize mental health care in communities of color through healthy discussions that provide education and awareness.

Dr. Norwood’s work is embodied by: “you may not be responsible for being down…but you are responsible for getting up.”  She believes that her calling is to help decrease the stigma of mental health in the Black community and to promote a culture in which members of marginalized communities can continue on a path of emotional wellness.
