In whispered interpreting, interpreter sits behind the client or uses a headset and silently whispers the interpretation to the ears of the person. Whispered interpreting is simultaneous, not consecutive, although no booth is used and therefore whisper interpreting is only suitable for very short interventions. An interpreting booth is a portable box or a fixed room where conference interpreters work. The size, design, insulation and ventilation of interpreting booths are defined by ISO standards. Assuring highest standards in interpreting booths is key to an efficient simultaneous interpreting experience and also important for the health and well-being of interpreters. Interpreters spend hours in their booth (or room), which is pysically their work place.

Interpreting equipment is a set of tools and devices required to perform simultaneous interpreting during meetings and conferences. Typical interpreting equipment package consists of a central interpreting management system, which manages all other equipment, as well as an interpreter booth, interpreter unit(s), audience units (headsets) and microphones. Intepreting equipment or system must be connected to a sound system which has a main mixer or the mixing console, microphones, computers, visual equpment (i.e. projectors, screens) and loudspeakers.
