Drawing Funny

Show Notes: I started off working on one episode, but once I added the MSCA news elements it became a bit longer than I wanted, so I decided to do a shorter one just focusing on current and upcoming events here. In this episode I've got info on murals, meetings, plays, art shows, appearances, anniversaries, and more happening around the M-town...as well as Nicki and me playing tourists close to home for my birthday. (BTW- I share a birthday with Cookie Monster- happy birthday, Cookie!) For more info, links, and pics please check out the MSCA website at www.midsouthcartoonists.org. You can contact me (Lin) at: podcast(at)drawingfunny(dot)com, and would love to have you as part of our second season of "Drawing Funny". Hope you had a Happy Halloween and Day of the Dead. Stay safe, stay focused- and I'll talk toons with again you soon..!

Show Notes: This episode is our 1 year anniversary show, and man what a strange trip and unusual year the first season has been- pandemic, snowpocalypse, layoffs, new job, new equipment, learning curves, and lots of comic conversations! For the first episode of our second season I share some MSCA member news, what art projects I've been working on recently, some of the podcasts I listen to, and my thoughts on self-publishing and some of the comics industry publisher news I've heard about on the interwebs. Lots of "The Ghost With The Most" on this episode in celebration of mine and Nicki's 10th wedding anniversary this month. I proposed to Nicki at the Phoenix Comic Con's art show way back when I was emceeing their art show as Beetlejuice...and she said, "Yes."...well, technically she shook her head but that counts- I had witnesses! BTW: If you'd like to be a part of the show or have your comics project, event, or podcast featured on a future episode please give me a yell. You can contact me at: podcast(at)drawingfunny(dot)com - would love to have you on as part of our second season! Stay safe, stay tooned- and please share with others..!

Show Notes: This episode is about "paying it forward" and some of the posts I recently ran across in the "I CREATE COMIC BOOKS" Facebook group and my responses to them. I've gotten a lot of help from others over the years, and I hope that this podcast helps anyone wanting to learn more about creating comics, and the business of promoting them. I also talk a bit about what I've been up to art-wise (mostly drawing  sketchcards), and touch on some of my art-anxiety, drawing-depression, professional-jealousy, and impostor-syndrome experiences.

Stay safe, stay tooned- and please share with others..!

Show Notes: This episode Nicki and I catch up with one of our favorite writers, and humans- John Ostrander. We met "Uncle John" several years back at MidSouthCon and immediately became friends. He's a legendary comics creator who's worked for Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse, Image, Valiant, as well as First Comics- which was his first comics gig. He's been a playwright, director, actor- and almost a priest..! Just before Covid struck he filmed a cameo scene as Dr. Fitzgibbon for the upcoming "The Suicide Squad" movie by James Gunn, which will be released in theaters and HBO Max on August 6, 2021.

Show Notes: "HEROINEBURGH" is a live-action episodic video series and a comic book series (and created in that order). The stories are about a universe of superpowered females in a fantastical version of Pittsburgh. It's adventure, drama, comedy and romance, all in the finest spandex and capes, and the comic book art is classic Bronze Age- with some modern computer coloring. The videos are available for download from their website- Heroineburgh.com, and the comics are on sale in over 150 stores nationwide and at their many comic con and comic shop appearances. In this episode I talk with the mysterious Mr. H about the world of HEROINEBURGH, creating comics and shooting video in the Steel City, plus swap some stories about his connection to the Memphis music scene. So hop on the bus, Gus- and make a new plan to take a trip to Heroineburgh...by way of Memphis.

Show Notes: This episode is one of my shorter ones, and for this mini-sode my cats Jarael and Lena decided to visit me in the Batcave while I worked. I recently got in a new mic and wanted to give it a test drive. I figured while I was recording I could share some MSCA news and let you know what Nicki and I have been up to lately. Thanks to Peter Rios for the shout-out on his "The Daily Rios" podcast. He mentions my show on TDR Ep. 503 during his conversation with Dave Dwonch, as well as playing my "Drawing Funny" promo spot- thanks, Peter! I've got two comics conversations scheduled for this week and will be bringing those to you as soon as I can.

Winston Gambro is a graphic designer by day, and comic creator by night. He’s created the comedy webtoon "Gumshoe City", which has detective Meatball Matthews journeying out of his element when his best friend disappears and leaves behind a dead body; his online cyberpunk mystery  "Overflow", that has Ava Lee, a private detective attempting to prove her brother didn't commit a war crime and possibly stop the end of the world; and his anthology comic series "Rex Radley: Boy Adventurer", an all ages book that was inspired by every awesome cartoon made to sell toys (and was successfully backed by two Kickstarter campaigns). Winston currently lives in Aurora, IL with his cat, Hazel.

Welcome to Drawing Funny– where we talk toons with some sketchy characters in the comics industry and fandom. I’m your host, Lin Workman.

Drawing Funny is an MSCA podcast. The Mid-South Cartoonists Association has been drawing funny in the Memphis area since 1987. You can find out more about the MSCA at www.midsouthcartoonists.org, and on the MSCA Facebook page. Be sure to like that page and follow our group on Twitter @MSCA_Memphis, and on Instagram @midsouthcartoonists. You can keep up with this show at any of those, or on the show’s site here at www.drawingfunny.com, as well as on Twitter @drawingfunny1, or Instagram @drawingfunnypod.

Shameless plug for me- I have my linworkman.com art site as well as my geek travel blog and web comic havegeekwilltravel.com. My social media info and bio are on each of those sites along with several examples of my art work.

If you’d like to contact the show please email podcast (at) drawingfunny (dot) com. Or to contact the MSCA email midsouthcartoonists (at) gmail (dot) com. You can also visit the “Contact Us” page at www.drawingfunny.com/contact-us/.

Thanks for listening. I hope to talk toons with you all again soon. Until then, “stay tooned” and keep drawing funny.

We discussed it, his upcoming show/store appearance schedule, the art scene in Pittsburgh (AKA "Comicsburgh"), plus his involvement with the live action "Herioneburgh" and its upcoming crossover with "The Edge".  You can find Second Sight Publishing and "The Edge" Comic in Diamond's PreviewsWorld catalogue. If you've got a comics series you'd like to discuss on the show, shoot me an email- podcast (at) drawingfunny (dot) com. Always enjoy talking toons with comics creators, and would love to have some CONversations with show/event organizers and see what info/advice/stories they can share. Hope you have a great Memorial Day. Stay safe, and stay tooned!
