Season Eight – Best of Drew & Sam

This is it, we have finally reached the end of the season and that means it’s time for Drew and Sam to look back and choose their favourite highlights of the preceding weeks.

This season there has been no lack of subject matter for the chaps to get their heads around and their teeth into. They’ve said many sad goodbyes to eminent professionals regrettably lost in recent months, along with addressing important changes in the structure and running of the industry. They’ve discussed interesting news (both joyful and controversial), their own professional triumphs and challenges, and, as always, have shared plenty of laughter, banter, beers, stories and dreams.

Joining the boys at Drewling Samantics never results in a dull moment, and the brightest of those are gathered here in one sparkling episode for regulars to enjoy again, and newcomers to savour for the first time. A fabulous finish to a wonderful fifteen weeks, and certainly not a time to be down hearted – there’s more podcast brilliance to come, Season Nine is on the way!

  • S08E13 - Strike Out
    Strike Out

Sadly, today’s show is part of the rapidly approaching conclusion of Drewling Samantics Season Eight, with just this episode before the chaps plunge into their ever popular “Best of” compilations. But there is definitely nothing mundane about it, as Drew and Sam provide more diverse and stimulating conversations regarding very topical events in the entertainment world.

As is often the case, they begin by honouring two lost performers - one a quiet self- deprecating “workman” of the theatre, and the other a true icon of the sixties. And, it is clear that the privilege of being able to raise a drink to hugely talented professionals is never taken for granted by our podcasting pair.

Then some rather pressing issues for present day actors are addressed, as, although the subject of Artificial Intelligence and its ramifications has been discussed at length in a previous episode, certain elements of the influence and implications of using AI have significantly intensified in recent times. It is a subject that can’t be ignored, and no doubt one that will be revisited again in future episodes, but for now the boys dig deep into the latest information and developments.

So Season Nine is on the horizon, but before that there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy this current one. So what are you waiting for?!

  • S08E12 - Not Just For Christmas

    Not Just For Christmas

On several previous occasions the Drewling Samantics have welcomed practitioners from the wonderful world of pantomime, and indeed they are seasoned pantomime performers themselves, so it’s no shock that they are thrilled to be joined by another pantomime fan in the form of this week’s guest Simon Lucas. Simon is the creator and driving force behind the ‘Pantomime Magazine’, a brilliant quarterly magazine devoted to all things pantomime, from the professional performers and creatives both on and backstage, to the amateur actors and stage-crews all across the country (and indeed world-wide) - in fact basically all the people who truly love pantomime!

Simon, an experienced Dame himself, reveals how the magazine came to life, his personal passion for panto, and the year-round dedication of those that bring this seasonal delight to life. If you love pantomime, or want to know more, there are many joys to discover from Simon and his magazine, and there’s no better place to get an introduction to both of those than right here in this latest fascinating and entertaining episode of Drewling Samantics!

  • S08E11 - Busman's Holiday

    Busman’s Holiday

Anyone who regularly tunes in to Drewling Samantics will know that Drew and Sam have few complaints when it comes to their work, but, regardless of the fortunate lack of negativity, it is still important to take time out and relax (if that’s ever possible!)

In this episode our podcasting pair turn the discussion to things that occupy them during their rare moments of down time, and, as with the majority of the population, most of what the boys seek out to amuse themselves is within the arts - be that film, TV, theatre, books, or anything else along those lines. But does that mean they are really getting a break? What are they currently listening to, reading, or binge watching and why? When does recreation leak into work or research, and vice-versa? All these questions are addressed and answered in today’s show, and help give us a bit of a glimpse into what makes Drew and Sam tick.

There’s also a chance to remember and say a sad farewell to some great actors that we have lost recently. While it’s never a pleasant time, being able to recognise and be thankful for the wealth of talent, both in the UK and overseas, is invaluable. So join the Drewling Samantics duo in their tribute to these stars, and seize the opportunity to find out a little more about Drew and Sam’s activities outside of the wonderful world of performance.

  • S08E10 - Comedy in Good Company

    Comedy in Good Company

Dropping in for a chat with Drew and Sam this week is someone they have both worked with in the world of immersive dinner theatre - producer, writer and director Steve Arber.

A huge fan of sit-com’s and other classic comedy shows, Steve produces and directs his popular and successful tributes to great British TV programmes, touring and visiting venues all over the country and the world. During his visit to Drewling Samantics he discusses his journey into this genre of entertainment, and how it has led to him creating a theatre of his own, as well as helping his sister run her dance and theatre school. And keeping it in the family is definitely the topic of the day, as Steve’s brother Mike joins in too – taking on the writing of new scripts and shows alongside Steve.

Dedicated to comedy and entertainment, Steve proves that along with all the hard work there are plenty of laughs and good times to be had. One of the nicest guys you could meet and work with, Drew and Sam are lucky enough to have had the pleasure, and now are delighted to introduce Steve to us so we too can learn just what a talented and fun bloke he is!

  • S08E09 - Shrouded In Celebrity

    Shrouded In Celebrity

Drew and Sam love the work they do and feel privileged to be part of an industry full of talented, generous and understanding people. Whether on the top or the bottom rung of the success ladder, in the main, the performance world is full of great people.

However, what happens when power, or celebrity, or so-called stardom hides something sinister? What happens when trust is misused and audiences and fellow professionals are disappointed or abused? Drew and Sam discuss a delicate and serious subject this week, it’s no joking matter and instead allows for a deep and honest look at some questions many people have been asking recently. In these times of celebrity and social media what was once hidden is more frequently exposed, but to what effect?

This week Drewling Samantics proves that show business isn’t all glitz and glamour, so join the boys for an episode that isn’t afraid to take closer look at the more uncomfortable areas, and addresses some of the darkness hidden by the light.

  • S08E08 - The Sum of His Parts

    The Sum of His Parts

An old friend of Drew’s joins Drewling Samantics this week for another entertaining and joyful guest episode. Patric Kearns is an actor, director, producer, comedian and educator – without a doubt a man of varied skills as well as one full of stories.

So with a degree in pure mathematics, where do you go next?  In Patric’s case it was on to a career in the theatre.  (Yeah, we’re trying to work that one out too!) He’s worked in weekly repertory as an actor, director and producer, toured in the UK and abroad in hundreds of plays and has a fearless joy on stage – something that Drew can testify to all too well! Patric also works with his talented wife, a fellow performer, running two Stage Coach schools, passing on his love of the theatre to young aspiring performers, and helping keep the wonderful world of entertainment alive and thriving.

And as if all of that wasn’t enough, Patric has also turned a personal challenge into a one-man stand-up show, and has successfully conquered that testing and forbidding world too. He’s a true man of the theatre, with a wicked and witty twinkle in his eye, and as is proved by this episode, is absolutely full of fun and great stories – he couldn’t be more suited, as that’s just what Drewling Samantics is all about!

  • S08E07 - Raising Recognition

    Raising Recognition

News, views and reviews are the order of the day in this episode of Drewling Samantics. Drew and Sam mull over the latest theatre goings on and focus particularly on a very exciting pay review and increase agreement for West End workers - both on and back-stage. The boys contemplate what this very welcome development could mean for the wider performing world and also discuss other “opportunities” for actors, or, to be more accurate, the unpaid and low level/expenses only work that is so common in the industry, as well as the various pluses and minuses that go along with these jobs.

They also pay tribute to the continued success of their numerous guests and bring news of a few who has some specifically exciting and notable recent achievements. So all in all a mixed bag of content and chat from the Drewling Samantics duo this week, of course in their own unmistakable and entertaining style! In fact there are even a few mutual compliments flying around (yes, I think we’re all a little shocked!) and, not that we need an extra excuse, those surely make this show worth a listen!

  • S08E06 - Girl Power

    Girl Power

The boys’ guest this week is all action, all talent, and all about success! Yes, Drew and Sam are extremely pleased and excited to be able to welcome the lovely Hannaj Bang Bendz to Drewling Samantics, to talk about her acting career and also about her recently becoming a European Jiu Jitsu champion!

Hannaj has come a long way since re-enacting her favourite movie scenes with her sister as a little girl. She now regularly travels the world filming action movies, heavy with fight scenes, and adores playing powerful female roles, something that fortunately the industry is embracing a lot more in recent years. Talented and poised she’s a real-life Lara Croft and an inspiration to both women in, and those aspiring to be part of, the performance world.

She is also a seasoned MMA competitor, often taking part in high level bouts, and her love for the sport clearly shines through as well as heavily influencing and enhances her acting career and the roles she undertakes. In fact Hannaj will soon be competing in the World Championships, so along with the Drewling Samantics lads we wish her every success.

So why not jump in right now, and join Drew and Sam for another fantastic episode of Drewling Samantics as they pose some more questions to another truly talented guest – safe to say they aren’t about to argue with her answers!

About Drewling Samantics

From the publisher's feed

Drew and Sam are actors. They haven’t won any Academy Awards yet, and neither of them is in line to be the new James Bond (sorry Sam), but between them they do have over half a century’s worth of…
