    Seeing Double

The boys at Drewling Samantics have always endeavoured to look on the positive side of life, despite its ups and downs. This week proved incredibly sad for the whole nation with the passing of our much beloved Queen, but true to her philosophy and the message she always tried to project, the theatre community, along with many other businesses and the public, carried on. Performers and audiences alike managed to continue, enjoying both sides of the world of entertaining, while remembering her fondly and paying a fitting tribute.

Sharing lighter news from the business and new developments for various sectors of the industry, in today’s show our podcasting pair also bring us some rather revealing content. After teasing listeners and viewers in previous episodes, Drew and Sam have more to tell about the projects they have been keeping under wraps. Drew is still only able to tell us a little bit about his latest project, but there are fascinating details from Sam on how he has researched, developed and created his most recent roles, and some famous actors who have also undertaken the same challenge on their own acting journeys.

Another week, another top quality outing from everyone’s favourite co-hosts, so sit back and enjoy!

  • S06E04 - Theatrical Therapy

    Theatrical Therapy

The famous phrase tells us “laughter is the best medicine”, and it is equally true that theatre and entertainment can help in many ways when it come to improving the lives of those who need an extra bit of positivity, or are suffering in some way.

Drew and Sam’s second guest of Season Six is David Bain - a man deeply involved in and passionate about theatre, bringing the hidden plight of others to light, and helping people to heal. The unique shows he has written are designed primarily to give necessary exposure to the serious subject of mental health, but beyond using theatre to open this world and publicise it more, Dave also successfully uses his creations to manage a delicate juggling act of entertaining and informing.

Combining his experience as an actor, musician, writer, and producer with being a practising psychotherapist, results in his work being not only well crafted and presented, but vital and hugely appreciated, and Dave’s ability to find humour in just the right places while never losing the gravitas or impact of the serious topics he addresses has earned him and his productions extremely positive responses. So join Drew, Sam and Dave in this latest Drewling Samantics episode, for conversation that is sometimes serious, sometimes light hearted, and always interesting and entertaining.

  • S06E02 - Master of Mirth

    Master of Mirth

For the first guest of Season Six Drew and Sam are lucky enough to be joined by the very gifted and incredibly funny Callum Donnelly. A quick glance at his credentials proves he is more than qualified to talk comedy, and he’s even a familiar face to long-time Drewling Samantics fans, having appeared briefly on the special pantomime episode in Season Three.

With a Masters in comedy and many years of experience in the theatre, Callum is proof that getting laughs is a serious business. Whether working solo or collaborating with other performers, his success on stage and screen has allowed him to branch out and take on various other connected roles in the entertainment sector including writing and teaching, and he even works closely with Canterbury’s Marlowe theatre and the RSC, taking Shakespeare into schools and to the wider community, as both a director and mentor.

If that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he runs an events company taking cinema to rural communities, further showing he is a true  advocate of getting the arts to the people. Callum is hugely inspiring, extremely funny, and most of all is a superb guest and a brilliant way for Drew and Sam to kick off the guest list for this brand new season!

Season Five – Best of Drew & Sam

So now they’ve finally reached the last episode of Season Five, it’s time for Drew and Sam to bow out with a compilation of their favourite moments and stories from the last fifteen weeks.

This season has seen them out and about and on the road, visiting new places and old haunts,  recording in studios, on sofas, and of course in Sam’s flat too, and all these venues have allowed them to bring another fabulous collection of DrewlingSamantics episodes to listeners - both regular and new. With shows and screenings, location reports, and the usual chats and stories (not forgetting the friendly banter which is always thrown in for good measure!) it has been a varied and fun season for this podcasting pair.

And now it’s over to us, to experience a selection of the bits Drew and Sam particularly enjoyed and wanted to share again. If there’re any moment that you specifically loved that haven’t been included then do feel free to get in contact with the boys, as well as sending in the usual suggestions and comments which are always welcomed and valued. But if not there’s only one thing to do; and that’s to sit back and wait, as, with exciting changes and new features, Season Six is on its way so Drew and Sam will be inviting us all to more DrewlingSamantics very soon.

  • S05E13 - Keep Calm and Overcome

    Keep Calm and Overcome

Sometimes in life unexpected situations crop up that need a bit of lateral or creative thinking, and, no matter how carefully planned they are, this is often true in theatrical productions too.

For their last episode together in Season Five (before the always enjoyable “Best Of” highlights shows), Drew and Sam share stories from when they and their fellow performers have been thrown a curve ball and have had to think on their feet to keep the show going. The ‘unwelcome guest’, strange venues, missing props, illnesses, and wild-life are among the culprits and instigators, and it’s worth listening in just to find out why Drew has a peculiar relationship with New Brighton…

The boys are on fine form as always, sharing a giggle or two and looking to the future, so tune in and join them for this brilliant outing as well as seizing the opportunity to send the Drewling Samantics chaps your suggestions for the upcoming season.

  • S05E12 - It's All Gone Wrong

    It’s All Gone Wrong

No need to panic podcast fans, today’s episode title is not an indication of the current state of affairs at Drewling Samantics studios, actually it relates to the latest brilliant guest that Drew and Sam are welcoming to the show, and in fact, they couldn’t be in better hands!

Harry Boyd is a talented and versatile actor and musician who is currently touring with the enormously successful “The Play That Goes Wrong”, and what makes it even more intriguing, is Harry is an understudy on the show, which means he has many other onstage and backstage duties. So tune in to this latest episode, as Harry (direct from the green room in the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield!) joins the boys to discuss the demands of being an understudy, how the perception of the understudy has changed, and how more than ever they are a vital part of keeping productions running. The intriguing and entertaining conversation is punctuated with some great tales of being dropped into shows last minute, as well as stories of a few on stage shenanigans too.

Another guest opening up on another special area of the wonderful world of theatre? Well that’s certainly not to be missed!

    Not So Secret

Whether you are trying to sell your house, securing a better wage for your next Premier League move, or relying on MI6 to protect you from the latest international super-villain, agents are very important in many different sectors of work and life. And that is particularly true when it comes to being a performer as our podcasting duo are only too aware. Yes this week Drew and Sam are addressing the intriguing topic of Agents – specifically in the world of theatre and film.

Why are they important? What exactly do they do? What makes a good agent? All these questions and more are explored by the boys as they discuss their experiences and compare their knowledge on the subject, being that one has been around a little longer than the other! So sit back and listen (or watch), as the Drewling Samantics chaps give some insight into yet another area of the industry - well that is if they don’t melt in all this heat first!

About Drewling Samantics

From the publisher's feed

Drew and Sam are actors. They haven’t won any Academy Awards yet, and neither of them is in line to be the new James Bond (sorry Sam), but between them they do have over half a century’s worth of…
