When we learn of the account of the resurrection, it is presented to us as a historical event and not a mystical or spiritual thing. There were witnesses, more than 500. It was written down as history. It was proclaimed by the Church as the gospel.

The Resurrection is a historical event. It is something that we know was attested to have taken place at a particular point in time, roughly about 33 A.D. and that there are written records of this event that can be dated to about the mid 50's A.D. Because of these facts, we who believe in Christianity, declare a historical event not just a creed or matter of mere belief.

This Sunday we hear a few messages that all point toward the efficiency of the sacraments. Most notably the Gospel portion tells us about the experience of Jesus on the road to Emmaus. Jesus was really dead. This is the starting point for us to fully realize if we are truly going to understand why the Ressurection is such a big thing. Jesus was dead and he really did experience death. And it was from this condition that he rose and lives today.

In order to understand the resurrection, we must get it in our heads that Jesus really did die and experienced death in the fullest sense of the word. This means that he went to Hades, the place in Greek culture as the abode of the dead. He really did go there and preach the gospels to those souls who were waiting for his death and resurrection.

We come now to the point of the Easter Vigil where we hear from the epistle to the Romans. In particular, we are told about how we are born again in baptism and it is that sacrament, not a sinner's prayer that is the confession of faith by which we confess with our mouths unto salvation.

We are born again by baptism. This is the implied message of Ezekiel when he tells us that we will be sprinkled with water and made clean. We are born again because we receive a new heart and spirit through baptism.
