Today we are reminded of the fact that we are part of a greater community. And. just like the apostles, we are sheltering in place in our homes out of fear. Not fear of the Romans, but of a virus that is sweeping through the world. Yet, it was in this kind of situation that Jesus appeared to his apostles. He showed up in their hiding place and revealed his mercy to them in instituting the sacrament of reconciliation.

Today with all the world in darkness we turn to a beautiful part of the Easter Vigil service that reminds us about hope in a dark and uncertain time. The Easter Season begins in darkness and then we see the light of Christ with the Easter Candle. This light spreads throughout the Churches until there is candlelight everywhere, and then one person sings a song, the Exsultet or Easter Proclamation. Jesus really did die. That is a reality. His soul was separated from his body and he was really dead. He tasted death just like you and me one day will. As a result, we have now a very real hope in his resurrection that we will live eternally.
