On this edition of Century: A World in Turmoil. In early 2025, abrupt
funding cuts by the U-S triggered a major shock and widespread service
disruptions across already underfunded harm reduction services and
programs. One year on, and combined with the rise of more punitive
drug policies these cuts have pushed people who use drugs into a
full-blown emergency. More than a financial crisis, this is a
political and human rights crisis, dismantling community-led services
and costing lives. The International Network of People who Use Drugs
conducted a survey last year of harm reduction organization and
service providers to assess the damage done. INPUD conducted a
follow-up survey in May of this year, results of which have been
compiled into a new report by INPUD entitled The Human Cost of Policy
Shifts: A World in Turmoil. INPUD held a news conference on Tuesday
July 21 to launch the report. We hear audio from that news conference
on today\'s show, including remarks by Anton Basenko, Executive
Director of INPUD; Isaac Ogunkola, Global Fund Programme Manager at
INPUD; and Judy Chang, Program Manager at Open Society Foundations.
