DTVC Podcast

Scott Murphy from All 90s Action, All the Time and New Horror Express is back to discuss another Steven Seagal DTV flick, this time "Submerged." It's Seagal in on a sub? I guess for 20 minutes or so. It's Seagal v Gary Daniels? I guess, one quick fight. It's Seagal in Uruguay? I guess it says Uruguay, but the country is nothing like Uruguay. Do we at least get Seagal doing a poor sounding, racially appropriative accent? Absolutely.

"DTVC Extra" are shorter solo episodes that I'll be posting on some weeks in addition to the main podcast. In this episode I'm looking at Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4. In the first part I look at the successes of the Infinity Saga, and how Disney wanted Kevin Feige to "Feed the Monster" post pandemic, especially with the launch of Disney+. While there are still successes in the early part of Phase 4, there are also signs of what was to come in Phase 5. In the second part, I look at 2022 for Phase 4, and how we could see things turning a bit more, and how "feeding the monster" was starting to see lesser results. From there I talk about the current movie environment. Is the lack of success of comic book movies a sign of "comic book fatigue," or do people just want more variety? And what does that variety look like?

In this episode I'm joined once again by Chris "The Brain" Kacvinsky from Bulletproof Action, and this time we're looking at the Sam Firstenberg flick "American Samurai," starring David Bradley and Mark Dacascos. We also point out that we're covering the original, not the "director's cut," but should Chris or I be approached by people on the street about it, we may reconsider that.

We're joined once again by Jon Cross from the PM Entertainment Podcast and the After Movie Diner to discuss a Sam Firstenberg erotic thriller double feature, "Criss Cross" and "Motel Blue." Before we get in on the first film, Jon tells us about "Countdown" with Carol Vorderman, and I connect it with an 80s video from the band Survivor. And then with "Criss Cross," we try to make sense of these two episodes of "Tropical Heat" aka "Sweating Bullets" mashed together with some toplessness thrown in. After a break, we chat about Grasshopper Junction, AZ, a fascinating stop on the way to the Grand Canyon, before we get stuck in on "Motel Blue," an erotic thriller starring Soleil Moon Frye and Sean Young.

Ty from Comeuppance Reviews is back for his monthly spot on the pod, this time we're revisiting the Phillippe Phactory, this time with two films from Cam Gigandet, "Mafia Wars" and "72 Hours." For our first one, we've got an organized crime actioner set in Italy, co-starring Tom Welling as former NFL star Mark Schlereth. Then for our second one, Gigandet's daughter gets kidnapped after he's into some baddies for some money, so his brother and his brother's friends need to rescue her within--you guessed it--72 hours! Finally, our spotlight on a fight looks at the end fight between Chuck Norris and David Carradine in "Lone Wolf McQuade."

Todd Liebenow from Forgotten Filmcast is back on, this time to discuss "Malibu Express," the unofficial start to Sidaris's LETHAL Ladies series. We look at Darby Hinton as the hero, and how as the series went on Sidaris shifted from the male lead to female leads with Dona Speir and Julie Strain; we also discuss the great 80s technology, which may have been cutting edge for its time, but now is fun for the nostalgia factor; and then of course there's the sex, plus the myriad shower scenes.

In this episode I'm joined once again by Jeanette Ward from The Mundane Adventures of a Fangirl, this time to discuss the Cynthia Rothrock/Donna Jason/Godfrey Ho classic, "Honor and Glory". Before that, we have a discussion on the state of comic book movies now that all four have been released this year. Then we get stuck in on "Honor and Glory," between the fun aspects of the dialog and acting, or the fantastic martial arts, or that we get a dream quartet of Jason, Rothrock, Chuck Jeffreys, and Robin Shou.

We're joined once again by Mitch from the Video Vacuum as we look the weird and wild "The Rare Blue Apes of Cannibal Isle." We jump right in and get after it, trying to make sense of this cinematic gem. We also reminisce about the old days of local TV and cable when one could stumble upon these kinds of crazy movies.

In this episode I'm joined by Freddie Young from Full Moon Reviews as we look at the new Superman movie and 1994's "Fantastic Four" film. With the first one, we discuss our feelings about the film overall, then what this may mean for the balance of power between Marvel and DC, and also whether or not "superhero fatigue" is an issue now. Then with the second film, we get stuck in on this Corman classic(?). What works, what doesn't, and how much it differs from comic book movies now.

In this episode Sean Malloy of "I Must Break This Podcast" is back, and we're discussing another Van Damme DTV flick, 1998's "Legionnaire." We look at how this may have ended up in the DTV world, but also how much nicer it looked than the modern DTV action flick, and throughout we talk about Van Damme's place in it all as someone transitioning from big screen star to DTV lead.
