First up from film

The Hong Kong International Film Festival, or HKIFF, is a platform for filmmakers, film professionals and filmgoers from all over the world to launch and experience new film works. It is committed to discover talents and introduce films to the Asian market.

The star-studded event opened with glamour on Monday.

Liu Yan has more.

On March 24th, the 38th Hong Kong International Film Festival and the 10th annual Hong Kong Entertainment Expo kicked off with a glitzy red carpet event.

Featuring the leading names in Asia's film, television, music and digital entertainment industries, the Entertainment Expo houses nine multimedia events, including the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market, Asia Film Awards and the Hong Kong Asian Pop Music Festival.

Actor Leon Lai is the ambassador of the expo this year. During the opening ceremony, he walked the red carpet briefly and stood next to Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Leung Chun Ying.

The glitzy red carpet of the 38th Hong Kong International Film Festival soon followed.

This year, the opening films were both Hong Kong productions; "Aberdeen" and "The Midnight After".

(SB1, movie clip from "Aberdeen")

"Aberdeen," a drama about a Hong Kong family, reunites director Pang Ho-Cheung with his favorite leading lady, Miriam Yeung - who worked with him on his hit films "Love in the Puff" and the sequel, "Love in the Buff."

Louise Koo, star of the film, jokingly said he was worried about whether Lee Man Kwai, his daughter in the film, would show up to the festival.

(SB2, Koo, male, Chinese)

"The thing I worry about the most tonight is that, I invited my 'daughter' to go with me to the after party tonight. She said she needs to think about it.She has school tomorrow; I said, 'Just say yes.'"

His co-star, Gigi Leung, has something else to celebrate. She is turning 37 on March 25th.

Though Leung has to spend her birthday working, she hoped she could spend at least some of her birthday with a loved one.

(SB3, Leung, female, Chinese)

"I hope at midnight, I can spend (my birthday) with my husband. Either he joins us, or I leave earlier. We can celebrate together. "

"The Midnight After" also opened the show. The film is a horror-comedy about a group of minibus passengers who find themselves in the middle of a strange pandemic in Hong Kong and stars Simon Yam, Kara Hui and Janice Man.

This annual movie event runs from March 24th to April 7th. Dedicated to the discovery and promotion of creativity in the art and culture of film, the festival will show 300 films from 56 countries and regions.

The lineup promises to be as eclectic as ever, with an ode to local films.
