Dusty Futon

Calour Creative produces more than just music, and we talk about why they call themselves an "Independent Talent Group." They brought with them a Myriad of clothing and accessories they design, create and produce themselves. You can see all their "Not merch" clothing line on their website: www.wearecalour.com

They have a very unique take on their "talent" and how to portray. All of them are fresh out of high school and ready to make this their lives, and did so while still in school. We start off by talking about a previous project called "Pretty Colors" and go into a brand new project called "Camp Sad Boy." These guys are very creative. Check out their new project on their website...make sure to buy the gear when it's out! You might miss it...

Two-Thirds of the Brett Ellis (namesake included) showed up to sit on the futon today, but the third member was there in spirit! Calvin and Brett spoke for Rick many times, making us realize (as they "enlighten us") that he didn't need to be here...as long as he shows up to the shows. Brett and Calvin take us on a journey through the old Blues and Jazz days, reminiscing of the early days of "fusion," and talking plenty about it. Their most recent album was their first-ever LIVE album (after decades of writing and performing), amid over a dozen of other available albums.

Brett and Calvin brought with them the first release of the master for (what might be) the title track off of their forthcoming album..."The Enemy Within." BRACE YOURSELVES...these guys don't want you to have dry seats when they're done with you...that first hit's a doozy...YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!!!

Raul iRok Rios is an underground DJ turned Producer who "likes to music" and tells us that and MORE in this episode of the Producers Corner. We get to learn about the four elements of the Hip-Hop Culture...something Big Jon had no idea about. Tagging, Dancing, DJ, and Rapping...and Raul shares his personal experience with these and how it led him down the producing path.

We talk about the difference between Remixing and Covering a song after listening to his new project's, Avenue 44, REMIX of "White Walls," a Gabriel & Dresden original. While still unsure what to call this style, Raul and Dirty BOTH school Big Jon on the fact that there are multiple sub-genre's of EDM...much like Rock! When asked whether he has a plan when he sits down, Raul simply states "I just press buttons." Of course...that's with years of experience and knowing what those "buttons" do!

Make sure to check this guy out! Just search his name "Raul iRok Rios."

Max and Travis of Avenue Army join guest host Lindsay and Spicy Kim to catch up and talk touring! Lindsay is on loan to us from touring band Cold to talk with her friends from Minnesota. St. Paul specifically...don't confuse it with Minneapolis, or Max's tattoo artist might get upset. Max started writing songs at the cool age of 11, less than 2 years after picking up the guitar, and brought the band to San Diego only a few years ago.

Lindsay has history of playing with these guys (and Spicy's husband) and she instantly fell in love with their style and music. We get a chance to listen to some of their songs AND...we get a LIVE PERFORMANCE of a BRAND NEW SONG called "Back to Rehab." You don't want to miss that. Although, Big Jon's "on-the-fly" engineering might be somewhat amiss. We cover so many topics from finding new bandmates on Craigslist (or at Wells Fargo) to comparing America's Got Talent to The Running Man, but the most important part is the music...and you wont be disappointed as Lindsay wastes NO TIME getting into a track.

Make sure to follow these guys on Social Media and at theavenuearmy.com

The Dusty Futon Concert Report is a weekly update hosted by Big Jon. These episodes will be informing the listener what artist episodes are being released next and to outline concerts and shows from Dusty Futon guests.

In this episode we mention upcoming episodes from Avenue Army, Raul iRok Rios, Brett Ellis Band, Calour Creative, and more.

Big Jon provides a breakdown of upcoming shows and plays a music sampler of each artist. Make sure to go out and support as many of these LOCAL artists as possible!

Brett Ellis Band 6/8 - Brick by Brick - San Diego

Taz Taylor Band 6/22 - The Coach House - San Juan Capistrano (With Gary Hoey) 6/23 - Navajo Live - San Diego/El Cajon

League of Liars 6/23 - Ocean Beach Street Fair

King Shem is a multi-talented artist from the Boston area (specifically Brockton, MA) who has transplanted himself in the San Diego scene. His decades of experience have given him an extremely wide set of skills in making his music. We spend the first 5 or 6 minutes of the episode talking about sampling, something Big Jon isn't very familiar with; however, new host Dirty Disciple happens to be somewhat of an expert in that field. No matter…King Shem takes it upon himself to just share his deep coffers of knowledge with the Dusty Futon audience!

It's almost too much information…but, if you're new to producing or writing, it's very valuable. King Shem started humbly making bootleg tapes, using samples, off of a dual-cassette deck and has moved up to making his own loops and beats, using inspiration FROM other tracks. Apparently, country isn't an exclusion as he shows up wearing a Taylor Swift t-shirt. We talk all over the board in this episode, and learn how his new album, currently titled Black Hesher (but possibly ending up as a Self-Title), takes concepts and layering to a whole new level using Punk, Classic Rock, Jazz, and many other elements you might not even consider using…

Make sure to check him out at Brick by Brick on June 21st to see them kill it on stage…and, Midget Championship Wrestling!

San Diego POWER METAL band rocks so hard Tyler starts sweating! Nick has been working on this band since 2012, writing tunes and looking for other players. Good things come to those who wait, and three drummers later they have their mix! This up-and-coming group recently won a Brick by Brick competition for the Wacken Metal Battle USA, establishing themselves in the scene. They love playing there...and Brick loves having them!

Tyler's puns may be awful; however, the shredding of the guitars isn't! It's so good that at the end of the episode, Tyler dares Nick to play a slide whistle solo, while Chris plays the "bass flute." We track 3 of their songs in full, Battle Cry, Children of the Night, and Mistress of the Pit. We sample a bit of Anthem for the slide whistle solo, but you have to buy their EP on iTunes to hear the whole thing!

A couple of Bunch of Heathens seems like bad english, but it's what we have on the Futon today! Wes and Ryan from Bunch of Heathens joins us...Wes is a TRUE NEWB when it comes to guitars, so dont judge too harshly. This guy has only been playing for a few years and already has his own sound. Tyler jumps in to stop Spicy and Big Jon from ruining the story of why the act of picking up an axe happened to this Veteran of our Armed Forces. Stumbling through gigging and getting his sound out there, he met Ryan and G, and the rest will be history...(the band's only been around for less than a year). Ryan and G are incredible musicians backing up this brand new guitarist, helping him along the way...the way a band should be!

We check out three of their demo tracks, which you can buy at their live shows, and chat with them about the intensity of their music. It's a great talk about being inspired to play, no matter the age, and just going for it.

Follow then all over Social Media, Reverbnation, and Soundcloud!

Richard Galiguis (We can't seem to pronounce it right) of Vokab Kompany and AOA takes a seat to talk the progression of his musik styles. Make sure when spelling anything from this band, you replace the "C's" with "K's" ...it's kind of their thing. Richard is a Bass player now; however, he didn't start that way...he filled in as bass for one band then again for Vokab and ended up heading the Rhythm section. Oh yeah, the guy even plays drums...the big three! His AOA roots prove that, and we even play one of their tracks...

Vokab Kompany's album "The Good Kompany Album" is a step in a new direction for the rocker. Dropping the guitar from the lineup added a new dimension, as he explains. We talk about the different Fusion's happening with Rock, and the addition to backing tracks and synths in music. They've even added a live sax player to the mix...speaking of MIX, this album has a TON of credits to guests musicians and producers who helped in making this album crack for your ears, including Whitney Meyer in "View of My Life," which we play in this episode.

Southern Rock in Southern California seems rather fitting if you think about, and these guys have it deep in their soul. A few of these guys are leftovers from the tribute band Skynyrd's Innyrds. This brand new band out of San Diego has their foothold already in place thanks to the members' legacies. Their first CD is coming out on May 26th and the CD Release party will be epic! We play three of their tracks form the new CD and talk about all sorts of manner of things. Of course, we talk about all the members (after multiple mic checks...); however, we also end up trading mic's between members as they pass a "starbucks" around the room.

Trevor's humble beginnings are no match for his rockstar guitar playing. Lead vocals with a unique twang that takes you just below the Mason/Dixon line and into swampland and a demeanor of a puppy, this guy will melt your hearty and your ears. Their first CD isn't even out yet and they have a full-length video (shot and edited by the band) for one of the tracks, "Life Aint Giving Me Much!"
