Dusty Futon

This troublesome trio of musicians formed Ready Set Survive just a couple of years ago and are already sounding like a polished machine ready to take on the world. That's what Troy paid me to say, or at least what he WOULD'VE paid me if any of us made any money (just kidding…there wasn't any money exchanging hands). Fresh off their self-titles EP, the band has been releasing singles on their ReverbNation page and on other music services. You can buy the song anywhere as well to more directly support these musicians. We immediately loved these guys, they brought us beer! And a party attitude. Troy kept derailing the conversation away from the music talk, but we did happen to get some good information out of them. However, the "F***-Offery" never ended…all the way up to the end.

These guys LOVE to jam and try out as many instruments they can. Mixing it up, they don't want to be held down to any genre. Their first track "Fight" is a newly-released single and gets the blood pumping with an Alternative Rock sound, then they bring in the San Diego Hip-Hop with Soup the Messenger featured on the track to mix it up. Their other tracks can lean towards punk or towards rock ballad, and they do it all on stage. Troy even has his own mobile DJ service, TNTMobileDJ.com. He may not sound humble in the beginning of this episode, but it's all a show…this guy thanks everyone throughout the episode, and we have a ton of fun with these guys.

Don't miss an opportunity to see these guys by checking out their ReverbNation page: https://www.reverbnation.com/ReadySetSurvive and follow them on Social Media.

Enter the Blue Sky is an "Americana" (we discuss this in the episode) group from East County with very poetic stories and plenty of emotions tied to their songs. Tyler just BUTCHERS Sande Lollis' last name…somehow and Spicy "goes there" within the first few minutes…which seems to set the tone of this episode, but the ladies take it over from us. Sande is the writer and singer of the group, and with Karen playing the Viola and singing right next to them they go from making you cry to making you want to jump out of your seat and dance. Seriously, Spicy actually started crying during the first track we played, "Hold On." With a soulful blues melody and minors to add to the sorrow, this song really grabs you at your deepest pain and wrenches your guts. AND YOU WILL LOVE IT! …and probably cry too…BUT, "I Really Want You" (Big Jon makes puns with each song title) is a complete 180-degree turnabout that makes you want to get up and dance. You will find yourself tapping your toes without even realizing it.

Sadly, their Harmonica player passed away in January…Sandy and Karen talk lovingly about John's style of play and his immense talent after we hear his intense and powerful performance on "Hold On" and throughout the rest of their album "Re-Entry," available anywhere you buy your music. The songs are powerful, the artists' history is rich, and they've only been together for a few years. The live performances are electric and are talked about by many, make sure you don't miss them!

The Broken Stems really get down and dirty with their gritty style of Rock and the stories to go with it. This talented three-some of guys will make your soul bleed from moment one! Of course, you'll feel better afterwards. These three amigos, strike that...Bearded Foxes...wait, no...they're a little confused on what they really are; however, right now they go by Broken Stems and that's how you can search to find their beautiful blend of blues based rock and alternative on any music device. They're constantly performing live, so check out the Concert Reports RELEASED ON WEDNESDAYS for when and where you can find them playing...

We play three of the songs off of their "Joshua Tree Sessions" EP, and they really raised the temperature in the room...Spicy was on-fire after hearing Jesse's voice. From the anthemic "Play it Loud" to the soulful "Rest Assured," these guys have some serious talent. Not just talent in their instruments; Brad produced the "Joshua Tree Sessions" EP and Jesse directed/filmed/edited their video for "Play It Loud!" They've got it all...

Party band CHUGBOAT return to the Dusty Futon with BRAND NEW Material...and a new sound? Well...it's more refined, and "more of a mature" sound...so they say. This gaggle of goofs are reworking their sound (just a bit) but we can still sense the party vibe and the innuendos. Even if they ARE less direct than "Papaya". These guys are veterans of the Dusty Futon and have come back with THREE BRAND NEW TRACKS for you to peruse. We play one that you've NEVER HEARD OF and some of the singles they've already released. Listen as the guys talk about the tracks and even sing along to the backing vocals.

We have fun talking about their versatility of instrumentation and their dedication to their craft. These guys just love to perform. We get word about how they're experience lends them to believe Vinyl is the only physical recording medium left worth putting out. Of course, digital is the key…listen to why they believe that. It may help you save a few bucks…

The Rough joins us on The Dusty Futon and Big Jon FINALLY gets to chat with Jules Whelpton, #ThatBlondeBassist. This girl is a riot! Jules and Darren join us ON TIME, and Drew got caught in traffic…so, it takes a few before we get to the tunes since he's the one bringing them in. Interesting side-note about Darren…he's the drummer for the band, and he became a drummer by accident! He's freaking amazing on the skins and we almost never heard from him! Jules is one helluva musician herself. Starting on Violin and moving all over any stringed instrument, at least any instrument with a G-string.

Drew finally shows up with the tunes and we get to hear some badass music from this 3-piece Rock/Punk/Alternative band. #IAMDREWSMITH Since it was so late in the episode, we decided to power through these songs and play them practically back-to-back. It was worth the wait though. While Jules isn't in any of those tracks, she plays them live, sings background, and will be "all over" the next album they drop…which will hopefully be SOON!

Make sure to follow them @TheRoughMusic on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook!

Sppike, Rumble T, and Maestro Mike of the League of Liars join us on the Futon to debut a few of their tracks. They have a debut album coming out an d want to chat about it...and THEN some! Sppike is spelled with to p's and he's one of the players in the Spice Girls / Sex Pistols tribute band, Spice Pistols. That gimmick aside, fellow "Spice Pistol" Michael Fairchild "aka Maestro" (self declared) fronts this amalgamation of music. League of liars might not be telling the truth, but they claim to have inspirations from all different styles and genres of music...well, that's an easy one to believe...

The three "liars" share three of their songs with us, from their debut album with a working title "$5 demo for $10" (not sure if that's a lie), and some stories along the way. We also get a tidbit from Sppike on Arthritis and aging rockers...it's a valuable one too!

19 Year Old Ricky Garcia may just have an old sole to go along with that soulful voice. His Rhythm and Blues voice lends itself to multiple genres as he moves his way through trials and errors…mostly trials…and mostly successful. He's been playing music since fourth grade and started actually focusing on it when a friend uploaded a video of him singing, against his will. It got attention...and he liked that he could reach people.

This kid is incredibly humble, and schools all three of us (Spicy, Tyler, and Big Jon) on how he writes music HIS way! Speaking of School...he's a student still, working on a Criminal Justice degree. Big Jon gets hung up on his production software, FLStudios (formerly Fruity Loops), and can't seem to think about anything else, but we do play two of his soulful tracks. One more R&B and the other a little different.

Take a listen to his episode and then find this kid on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3AWuOU81eZzM4AeKNWIxJn?si=k8wDi4zvQ7W18oc7YCYJUg

Taz Taylor insists it's the "Taz Taylor Band" and that he can't do it alone. This mainly Instrumental group is a heavy-hitting hard rock band who shares their music here on The Dusty Futon! We chat about how they've been around since 2004, with Val Trainer (Drummer) joining in 2006.

Taz is a London transplant who came to San Diego with very little and worked hard to put out an album, playing nearly all the instruments himself on "Caffeine Racer." Moving forward, he's a four-piece ensemble that features vocalist Chandler Mogel from time-to-time. And other famous guest musicians...Taz and Val love to name-drop, in an extremely grateful and humble way.

Listen to a few of their tracks in this episode and follow them at taztaylor.com!

Chelsea Scott of Second Story Studios lets us interview him and use his studio! We ended up talking for almost FOUR HOURS, but condensed it down to around an hour for you. Want to hear some of the extra stuff? Check it out on our Patreon page...the only place to get behind-the-scenes content from the Dusty Futon. www.patreon.com/thedustyfuton

Chelsea starts out right away giving out props to other tenants at the building where Second Story Studios is located, right after Dirty talks him up with multiple accolades. We had already been talking for two hours before we "officially" started the episode, and we covered everything from Chelsea's imitation of Dave Grohl in the tribute band Faux Fighters to Cognitive Psychology and Alien-con. Dirty and Chelsea work together at this studio, and recently had an artists who goes by "Gallie" record in studio. We preview her track #DearMonday and talk about what takes to be an entertainer in this current industry.

Chelsea grills Dirty for some more backstory that we don't know yet, and we get some stories from the studios. PLENTY OF BONUS CONTENT will be available on Patreon, including 5 Production Tips from the producer himself, and a brief talk about being a producer.

The guys dish about their early years and working with A&M records while really wanting to get Atlantic Records...what happened? You have to listen to find out...

Speaking of listening...we debut a BRAND NEW TRACK (actually...two of them) from their newest album. The guys open up about the meaning behind some of them and talk about the collaborative effect of the fortunate four-some. We also get to hear their recount of landing that gig with Jack Russell's Great White on June 9th. A great history of the Great White band and why Jack's name is now on it...
