She tutors students with Dyslexia and is currently in a Practicum to receive Orton Gillingham Associate Level Certification. I recently met Lois Letchford, the Chief Education Officer, Program Director, Instructor, and Development Specialist at Teaching Students with Dyslexia. She is the author of the book Reversed: A Memoir.  Lois is also dyslexic, as is her son Nicholas. When he was a young boy in school, no one was trained to help him.  She stepped in and created curriculum to help her son. There is a lot of healing needed when a dyslexic child is humiliated and made to feel stupid...when they are not! One in five children has dyslexia and it is a learning difference, not a disability. If you have a special way to teach letter tricks, do it! I have always seen creative ways to teach math and reading where students don’t forget! Something just stood out to me when I was teaching ce, ci, cy and ge, gi, gy. The letter “k” is also special when followed by e, I, and y and “k” says its name. We don’t use “k” with vowels “o” or “u”. I love teaching grammar tricks. I use a Picture Card, a Phonogram Card, and also have the student complete a graphic circle with words using these three categories. I hope you check this out. This is helping students remember.

OG or Orton Gillingham is Huge! After two weeks of an intensive  OG training, Dr. Cintron is in a 100-hour practicum but wants to share syllable types as she teaches with her reading program.

There are six syllable types you’ll want to teach your child. It helps with the visual and with the memory. Often the “l” is in the wrong place for dyslexic kiddos. This will really help.

One of my favorites is the Turtle Syllable types. Get a word that is a consonant LE word, like ruffle, snuggle, cuddle, apple, sizzle, etc… start at the end and count back three… 1-2-3, count back three. This is where we make our syllable division. More to come!

So now when I am post-testing my students, I am seeing the gains after 30 sessions. 

Some I don't post-test until 40 of 50 sessions because my program really rocks! But I send out Congratulations Certificates because they are making the 1-3 year gains we promise! What percentage of the time is when two vowels go walking the first does the talking true?

Someone asked me today, “Why don’t we say ‘when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking’ anymore? I know we can’t because that’s not always true, but why were we taught that when we were kids?” I’m going to tell you why. I’m in an Orton Gillingham Practicum and learning their methods but loving my methods. I go through several vowel teams, and grammar tricks you’ll love. I actually demonstrate my Steps 1-4 in my reading program. Phonograms, sound circles, plastic letters, and reading are the first four essential components of my Step By Step Reading program. Emma is one of our outstanding tutors while is a student at Citrus College. It’s amazing how college students really enjoy working with students and are very effective tutoring them with a structured literacy program.
