Emily O’Connor stepped away from working in schools to build a full time tutoring practice and created multiple revenue streams by creating educational cards that are sold online. Over the years, Emily has gotten many different offers from various schools and contractors. Educators are asked to do things they don’t want to do every day but Emily puts high value in working for herself and says  “My freedom doesn’t have a price tag”. Emily does not keep her rates super high but she makes it very clear to clients that she changes for her time and charges for consults. She keeps her standards high and works with families who are on the same page.

Rich Smith started a youtube channel called Teacher Entrepreneurs, making videos about personal finance, investing, retirements savings, and more. He now has over 20 thousand subscribers and was able to monetize his channel! Rich’s skills from being a teacher carried over really well to making youtube videos. Each video he taught one lesson in around 10 minutes and encouraged his audience to try it at the end. To keep his audience engaged, Rich always creates extra resources to put in the description box of his videos. For people looking to start their own podcast and wanting to be able to monetize it, Rich’s advice is to research affiliate marketing. In the past year, Rich was able to make $15,000 by making 8-12 minute youtube videos.

Joanne Kaminski has been an online reading tutor since 2010 and teaches others how to start their own online tutoring business. She focuses on how to acquire clients and market their business. Joanne did an assessment with her students every three months and discovered she was able to move a kid 1 or 2 whole grade levels up in reading. After acquiring more and more clients, Joanne became even more skilled in her tutoring and business-running skills and began to raise her rates. Eventually, she was getting so booked because no one was refusing her offering prices so she raised her rates to $100 an hour and still has a waiting list of students!

Dan Otter is a father, husband, teacher, author, and executive director of 403bwise.org, along with being a doctor. 403bwise.org is a website designed to educate and empower teachers and school employees about their retirement options. In 2012, Money Magazine named him a “Money Hero” for his "extraordinary efforts to improve others' financial well-being." Dan educated himself on investing and started to see the weakness of the 403b, so he wanted to educate other people on it and started to meet other advocates for it. Dan’s main message is for educators to look at their 403b and their vendors and start evaluating their options. He describes some of the different plans and what he advises of people depending on their options to save the most money and have the most comfortable retirement.

Jesse Roselin is an educator, entrepreneur, and business leader with 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience, 17 years of business management, and 15 years of  nonprofit experience. He founded Tutor Corps and Pacific Preparatory and co-founded the Tutor Corps Foundation. After feeling a bit limited and wanting more freedom and control, Jesse left his teaching job and began tutoring so he could have more control over his time and focus on individual students. For the first ten years of growing his business, Jesse was really focused on the teaching and took a slower approach to growing the business. He talks about if he was doing it now, what he would do better and differently. Having a clear vision of where you want your business to go is really important. As Jesse worked over time, he developed his vision but he talks about several things that especially helped him in doing this like listening to podcasts where other people tell their stories (just like this!)

Kara Scanlon is an educational therapist based out of Southern California and is also the chair of the national conference of the Association of Educational Therapists. She has realized that students are not interested in learning executive functioning. So Kara’s strategy is to start with a subject that they’re failing to gain their interest and trust, and then weave in executive functioning. Asking for the amount of money you think you deserve can be awkward and difficult but realizing your self worth, working with families that you want to work with and respect you, stating your price emphatically, and showing the 110% effort you will give are the strategies that have helped Kara find success.
