I started going to a nutritionist to help me manage my carbohydrate intake. She introduced me to substitutes for...food. The nutritionist also spoke strongly on moderation. I did moderate my consumption, but not substitution. I've heard of tough love, but tough eating be damned!!! "For health reasons," is a decent excuse, but one does not have to suffer.
