Eavesdropping: Conversations with two Life Consultants episodes

  • The Power of Mentoring

Children repeat the stories they see, so what does that mean for the kids who are witnessing terrible stories? When a child has a loving consistent adult, they begin to see that a different story is possible. Compound the number of consistent adults, and you're helping this kid build resilience. On this Episode of Eavesdropping, Melanie and Aaron discuss the critical role a mentor can play in the life of a child AND the role in the life of an adult. We may not be able to change the trauma a child experiences, but we can help a child build resilience and create a new narrative. We can do that for adults as well.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • Aaron’s time with children from adverse backgrounds.
    • Finding purpose in suffering.
    • The fallacy that you need to be perfect to be a mentor.
    • Melanie’s journey to find her mentor.
    • The importance of inviting leadership into your life.
    • Thank you so much for listening! We would be so encouraged to hear from you. Please reach out if this episode helped you in any way.

    • Ways to Bond with God

In today's episode, Melanie and Rachel talk about how our pain in bonding with God can be connected to the pain we have with our family. Rachel shares a tool that will help you discover if there's a connection between the two for you. They discuss the journey of wiping the face of our fathers off of the face of God.

What does a secure relationship with God (and people) look like?

      • You're comfortable with closeness.
      • You trust that you're valuable and worthy.
      • You can communicate openly and honestly. You can disagree, have a voice.
      • You have interdependence, not independent of Him, or codependent with Him.
      • You can be vulnerable.
      • Melanie and Rachel share ways that they have bonded with their parents and how that affected their bond with God and then share how they now bond with God outside of the typical Christian themes of reading the bible and worship with music.

      • Opposite Advice Day

Disclaimer: we are just having fun and don't want you to do ANY of the things mentioned in this podcast.

On today's episode of Eavesdropping, Melanie and her friend Aaron and fellow life-consultant answer questions and give advice on the topics of dating, and conflict.

Tyler wants to know if his expectations might be getting in the way of seeing clearly in his dating relationship. Aaron reminds Tyler of the importance of lowering his expectations, foregoing his morals and values and trusting his urges. Additionally, we look at the vital role dating a "looker" plays in any relationship and the classic, Isolate Yourself and Listen to Nobody method.

Susan wonders what she can do about her husband who shuts down and constantly avoids conflict. Aaron and Melanie discuss the building blocks of bitterness and explore the specifics of cultivating blame. They look at the importance of living in the past and tell Susan how she can keep a detailed list of the wrongs her husband commits in order to cut him down. The next time that bastard leaves his underwear on the door handle, you know what to do.

We hope you enjoy this episode of Eavesdropping and could laugh along with us. Every 5 weeks or so we will do an Opposite Advice Day episode where we give really bad advice to questions listeners ask. If you want to submit a question to be used in future episodes email us with SUBJECT: OPPOSITE DAY QUESTION. • Five Chemical Washes of Life

This episode has been labeled explicit due to the use of one f-bomb.

Melanie has Aaron share one of the concepts he learned while getting his Master of Education, he calls it The 5 Chemical Washes. He shares how at five different times in our life our brain will experience a chemical washing and with each stage, there are new questions and new realities a person walks out.

Here are the life stages that this happens:

        1. Baby.
        2. Puberty.
        3. Post-adolescences.
        4. Mid-life.
        5. End of life.
        6. If you're a young person being overly hard on yourself and how you should be further in your life, or a middle-aged person that feels like a teenager in their processes of life, then take a listen, and let us know your thoughts and questions.

We will make a second episode answering any questions that we get.
