Over the past decade there have been significant changes in how goods and services are delivered to consumers. As the retail landscape evolved, many firms have developed their own e-commerce platforms, fulfillment centers, and distribution networks. These changes have accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic and have not only impacted the retail trade sector but also other associated industries such as wholesale trade, transportation, and warehousing.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is exploring alternative measures of output and labor productivity for retail industries to expand our understanding of the changing retail landscape. This webinar will discuss the importance of productivity and explore alternative output concepts in the measurement of retail labor productivity.

The December 2023 NABE Outlook presents the consensus macroeconomic forecast of a panel of 40 professional forecasters. The survey, covering the outlook for 2023 and 2024, was conducted November 10-19, 2023. The NABE Outlook Survey originated in 1965 and is one of three surveys conducted by the National Association for Business Economics (NABE); the others are the NABE Business Conditions Survey and the NABE Economic Policy Survey. Founded in 1959, the National Association for Business Economics is the professional association for those who use economics in their work. NABE has over 2,900 members and 44 chapters nationwide. Mervin Jebaraj (chair), University of Arkansas; Kathy Bostjancic, Nationwide; Beth Ann Bovino, U.S. Bank; Martin Holdrich, Woods & Poole Economics, Inc; and Jack Kleinhenz, CBE, National Retail Federation, conducted the analysis of survey responses for this report. The October 2023 NABE Business Conditions Survey report presents the responses of 52 NABE members to a survey conducted October 9-17, 2023, on business conditions in their firms or industries, and reflects third-quarter 2023 results and the near-term outlook.

The NABE Business Conditions Survey—formerly the NABE Industry Survey—has been conducted quarterly since 1982. This survey is one of three administered by NABE; the others are the quarterly NABE Outlook and the semiannual NABE Economic Policy Survey. Founded in 1959, the National Association for Business Economics is the professional association for people who use economics in their work. Carlos Herrera, Coca-Cola North America (Survey Chair); Sara Rutledge, StepStone Group; Carolyn Evans, Intel Corporation; Emily Kolinski Morris, CBE, Ford Motor Company; Lester Jones, CBE, National Beer Wholesalers Association; and Ken Simonson, Associated General Contractors of America, conducted the analysis for this report.
