En este episodio te contamos la historia de María, que estuvo presa por un delito de microtráfico y vivió más de tres años en la cárcel junto con su hija pequeña. Su historia muestra cómo las políticas punitivas para delitos de bajo rango pueden profundizar un círculo vicioso de pobreza y encierro. Después, para entender mejor cómo impacta la experiencia de la cárcel en niños y niñas, entrevistamos a la psicóloga Lía Fernandez, coordinadora de Gurises Unidos, una organización uruguaya que promueve los derechos de la infancia a nivel regional.

En medio de una intensa temporada de huracanes en Estados Unidos, Helene se convirtió en el más mortífero desde Katrina, que fue hace casi 20 años. Hay más de 200 muertos en seis estados y las labores de rescate aún continúan. Una de las ciudades más golpeadas es Asheville, en Carolina del Norte. Desde ahí, uno de nuestros oyentes, Douglas Mulford, nos cuenta cómo fue vivir la tormenta en uno de los lugares que –hasta ahora– era considerado seguro frente al cambio climático. Además, conversamos con la periodista Patricia Serrano, quien ha reportado los impactos de la catástrofe para la población latina de la zona, y cómo se han conjugado varios factores para dejarlos en una situación más vulnerable frente a esta tragedia.

En septiembre, miles de colombianos se sumaron a la llamada “marcha de las canas”, convocada por el gobierno para defender la reforma de las pensiones, un proyecto que podría ser tumbado por la Corte Constitucional. La reforma es una de las promesas electorales del presidente Gustavo Petro, que busca enfrentar una realidad compleja: hay millones de colombianos sin jubilación y otros con trabajos informales o ingresos mínimos que tendrán graves dificultades para retirarse. Pero este solo es un capítulo reciente de un problema que afecta a toda la región de forma apremiante. Para entender la discusión en Colombia, hablamos primero con la periodista económica Camila González Olarte, una de las fundadoras de Economía para la pipol. Luego, Sergio Urzua, profesor de Economía de la Universidad de Maryland y especialista en el tema, nos cuenta cómo estamos parados en América Latina para enfrentar este “tsunami”.

Este 26 de septiembre se cumplen diez años de la desaparición de los 43 estudiantes de Ayotzinapa, y aún no sabemos dónde está la gran mayoría. Solo han encontrado restos de tres. Es el caso de impunidad y corrupción más grande de la historia mexicana de este siglo, y ha dejado en evidencia la complicidad entre las fuerzas de seguridad y el crimen organizado. En este episodio, la periodista mexicana Vania Pigeonutt y reporteros locales que fueron los primeros en cubrir lo que pasó la noche de la tragedia reconstruyen un período de unas horas que se iban a terminar convirtiendo en una pieza clave para entender la dimensión de este caso. Los traficantes de Colombia han logrado infiltrar la cadena de suministro intercontinental que se mueve a través del mar. Después de un año de investigación, el equipo de Cuestión Pública pudo reconstruir cómo los narcos colombianos han ajustado su modelo de negocio para introducirse en la logística del transporte marítimo. Al igual que en otros países de América Latina, el tráfico hacia Europa se mueve en contenedores que llevan productos como paltas, bananas y hasta materiales de construcción. A casi un mes de las elecciones en Venezuela, el gobierno de Nicolás Maduro no ha hecho públicas las actas electorales que permitirían verificar su supuesta victoria. La oposición dice que puede probar que su candidato, Edmundo González Urrutia, es el verdadero ganador, gracias al trabajo voluntario de los llamados “comanditos”: una red de miles de ciudadanos que se organizaron para preservar las actas el día de las elecciones ante un posible fraude. Desde Caracas, nuestra productora Mariana Zúñiga habló con dos miembros de los comanditos y nos cuenta cómo funcionó esta operación el día de la votación. Después, el abogado venezolano Mariano de Alba, experto en geopolítica y derecho internacional, habla de la reacción internacional y del peso real de la diplomacia frente a la crisis, y qué podríamos esperar del régimen de Maduro.
