In this episode of Eldercare Success, I tackle a common, yet overlooked, caregiving obstacle: the loss of family treasures. Whether it's an antique, jewelry, or a sentimental photo, these items often disappear. They can be accidentally misplaced and never found again, stolen, or taken by an antique dealer offering to pay cash for them – this was what happened in our case. Either way, the loss of a family treasure, can leave you angry, distraught, or frustrated in not understanding why, or how such a thing could happen. It should however prompt crucial questions.
If an aging parent is caught in this type of situation, what do you do? Do you call the police, or care facility authorities? Confront suspicious members? Or take a different approach?
This episode delves into the often-underestimated emotional impact of such losses, highlighting their role as potential red flags in our loved one's safety. It's more than a missing item; it's a signal you should take it seriously, and probe deeper into learning if your parents are truly safe on their own, or in their current living environment.
Despite all this, there's a silver lining: resilience. It’s important to remember that true wealth isn't in possessions but in cherished memories and experiences - no matter how stressful or depressing the loss of family treasure is.
There are additional tips and recommendations for all caregivers and families on how to manage this type of situation well. Caring for an aging, or elderly parent isn’t for sissies!
Stay informed, stay strong. Keep following Eldercare Success.

In this inspiring episode, I dive into a journey of resilience, innovation, and tranquility with my guest, Jennnifer Fink. She not only cared for two aging parents with Alzheimer's, but she also knows how it's impacted three previous generations. When facing recurring waves of caregiving, a unique stress can arise that often goes unnoticed: it takes an emotional and mental toll on everyone, especially when Alzheimer's disease runs in the family.
Jennifer has a unique way of managing anger and stress that was taught to her by a friend and colleague. She also shares how nature and crafts gave her the tools to meditate in a non-traditional way, while also being able to help others in her community.
Episode highlights:
Join me and Jennifer for a frank conversation about care struggles, healing, and finding calm after the storm. This episode offers a fresh perspective on managing stress and anger through alternative forms of meditation.

What are some of the most common unseen caregiver wounds, and how to understand PTSC?
In this episode of Eldercare Success, I shed light on a less discussed but critically important topic: Post-Traumatic Stress for Caregivers (PTSC). While the conversation around PTSD become pretty much mainstream, PTSC remains in the shadows, often overlooked, even by family and those of us experiencing it.
If you're caring for an aging parent, family member, or loved one, this is an episode you'll want to turn into and even refer back to over time.
In this show, I explore the subtle signs of PTSC, many of which we too often dismiss or don't understand, or see that this could be happening to you too. There are also a number of simple, yet practical tips to help you start to dig out of this situation yourself. Or better yet, recognize if you're falling into this trap so you don't go further down the caregiver rabbit hole.
Episode highlights:
Join me in breaking the silence around Post-Traumatic Stress for Caregivers. Whether you're experiencing symptoms of PTSC, know someone who is, or work in caregiving or mental health, this episode is a must-listen.
Share your stories, questions, and insights with us, because healing thrives in community.

What are “go-go,” “slow-go,” and “no-go” years, and which of these phases are your parents in? What happens when they can’t cover the cost of their own care and you need to step in financially? How can you create ways to protect their assets – at different stages in their lives - so they don’t become a financial liability for you, your siblings, or your own children? What’s safe and what’s not?
There’s a lot that falls into the money bucket when we take over caring for our parents. Even if we have an extra $30,000/month to spend on their care, do we really want to risk our futures? In talking with financial advisors of even the wealthiest families, this is something that most don’t want to have to face.
Tune in as I talk with my guest Jason Nightingale, an expert on creative ways and effective ways to improve the stability of your parent's assets, and help ensure their ability to care for themselves financially, even if they haven’t set things up well, before now.

In this episode, I discuss what can result from being caught between our parents when each thinks the other is losing their marbles. What do you do when each says to you, confidentially, “Something seriously wrong with him (or her)”? Or even worse, one parent, out of fear or concern, unintentionally “gaslights” the other into thinking that they have cognitive issues, when it may be the other way around!
This is an unnerving position when you’re just about to step in to care for your parents. It helps to know that there are more than just a few types of dementia to watch for. However, that can make our role as caregiver even more confusing. This stage of caregiving can get even more confusing when learning that not every type of Alzheimer’s results in memory loss.
This early phase of family caregiving has some unlooked-for hurdles.
Tune in to learn more.

I’m guessing you’ve seen some of those older actors, in TV ads, promoting reverse mortgages. One of whom got jammed up as the firm he was representing was pursued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau over concerns that they were misleading seniors.
Even I became skeptical, afterward, on this subject. However, my guests, Peter Tourigny and Jason Nightingale, shed some light on this topic in our next discussion, including:·
This is a power-packed episode that will help arm you and your parents with a list of questions to ask before you make any reverse mortgage decisions with or for your parents, or even yourself. So, tune in to this direct, to-the-point, discussion.
Myths and realities of reverse mortgage notes, and if they're part of the answer to your care cost challenges.

What happens when we, the primary caregivers, get sick or injured? Can our elderly parents, frail spouses, or other dependents help care for us? Too many of us let our own health fall short of where we need to be. This can make us miserable and add to the financial burdens on our families and others we love and care for.
In this episode, I share several ways to get help from work colleagues, friends, neighbors, those we care for, and even from a few sources you might not have thought about. I’ll also share a special antioxidant tea/brew that you can easily make at home. It’s good for you and those you care for, even when you’re not ill. Here’s that special recipe.
Olive and Basil Leaf tea:
Boil a pot of water. add the above ingredients and let steep until the water turns a goldish-green color. Strain, drink, and enjoy –hot or cold This tea has been known to keep colds at bay (excuse the pun) and even help with tooth infections – should you ever have one. It's also delicious as an iced tea!
The benefits of bay and olive leaves are numerous. However, like any herb, they can interact with medications. Please consult your medical professional before trying this tea, or other herbal teas.
Bay Leaf, benefits:
Olive leaf benefits, per Memorial Sloan Kettering:
Olive leaves contain oleuropein, which is thought to help reduce cholesterol levels and some levels of inflammation. Olive leaf extracts (OLE) also reduce glucose levels in the blood. Laboratory studies found that OLE can kill several microorganisms including yeasts, bacteria, and fungi. It was also shown to have anticancer effects, but more human studies are needed.

In this episode of Eldercare Success, we discuss the answers to a question that everyone should ask themselves before and while caring for an aging parent: Is this a privilege, an obligation, or is it going to be a burden that I will regret? If you’re already on the caregiving path, knowing the answer to this will color every decision you make along the way.
I recently asked this same question of other caregivers. Although a tough question to ask, the responses received surprised even me. It’s a complex, emotional subject that reveals valuable and useful ideas.

Who’s out there in the medical world fighting to protect our loved ones with Alzheimer’s or dementia? I address this big question, and others, with my guest, Dr. Allen Power, a geriatrician and noted expert in providing good care for and protecting aging adults.
In this episode, we look at the most recent push for FDA approval of Alzheimer’s drugs - those “magic pills” that we’re all hoping will save our parents from a fate we even fear for ourselves. The most recent ones have some nasty side effects. Why did the FDA review panel not want to approve the most publicized breakthrough (noted to have side effects of brain swelling and bleeding)? What alternatives have been used for years that are known to have fewer side effects?
But maybe there are ways for our aging parents, who might have dementia or Alzheimer’s, to help us help them. And:
There’s a lot more in store in this episode of Eldercare Success.
