  • Money Talks with Family

Managing the cost of a parent’s care can be like running a small, complex enterprise.  Discussing the ins, outs, and intricacies of financial oversight and care can sometimes bring up all sorts of emotions among siblings.

In this episode, I dive headfirst into a few ways to prepare for those “money talks” around the cost of care with your siblings, or even a parent.  Reminding yourself of the end goal is a great way to start.  However, when someone else has a different goal, your motives might come into question too.

It's not always easy, but when managed well, this can relieve some of your stress and help educate your siblings about what more they can do to help you and their parents through this time of their life. Tune in to learn more.

  • Can Caregiver Stress Cause Memory Loss?

This episode even caught me by surprise.  In this segment, I dive into research about how the daily pressures of caregiving can take a serious toll on our own memory, and a few ways to manage stress better.  While extreme stress hasn’t been found to cause Alzheimer's, it has been associated with accelerated brain aging and can even lead to temporary memory loss.  In addition, you’ll get some invaluable strategies for handling persistent caregiver stress, while finding more balance at home and work. There’s even a bit of humor in this one. And, as always, good tips to get additional support from coworkers and your employer, too.

  • Tea on the Commode, Really Nancy?

How do you cope with an aging mom?  So many assume this is the eldest daughter’s job. However, when the one who steps in and steps up had to be a son, things might be different.  What do you need to overcome, as a son, to help your mom bathe, or dress, or even use the toilet when you’re her son?  The same kinds of challenges can hold true with daughters and their dads. How will you hold it all together?

Pride and modesty will need to take a backseat for necessity and practicality. Creativity and empathy can help you move forward.  Here’s one son’s story on how offering a cup of tea to his mom, while on the commode, helped him move forward, with more strength on his caregiving journey.

    There’s more in store here!

GUEST: Mark Steven Porro is an award-winning designer, writer, and director. He has written lots of jokes, several screenplays, and one award-winning short film. A Cup of Tea on the Commode—a sad, sweet, and funny debut memoir—chronicles his multitasking adventures of filling his mother’s last years with love, laughter, and joy. Though not always successful, he came pretty damn close. A native of New Jersey, (Exit 163), where he moved back to from his then home in Hollywood so that he could care for his mother when she needed him the most. He now lives in the South of France. But hold your pity. He of sound mind and body chose to suffer in the heart of wine country where the locals insist his French isn’t so bad—at least that’s what he thinks they’re saying.

  • How to "Un-Isolate" yourself

If you’re working full time but also caring for an aging parent, the stress and feeling of isolation can be significant. Adding to that stress can be a fear (real or imagined) of potential retribution from your boss or peers if they find out. Even if you’re not working full-time, or part-time, you can find yourself isolated from the rest of the world – except for doctors, or other care providers.  For those employed and caring for a parent, understand that 56% of our colleagues who are also caregivers like you find themselves more stressed at work.  No surprise there!

Learn how to recognize if you’re falling into this isolation trap and how to “get out,” before you can’t even dig yourself out.  In this episode, I discuss the three key situations where you’re most likely to fall into the isolation trap: at home, at work, and in social settings. However, I’ve got a few solid tips to help, including how to help your boss have more confidence in you as a leader, even when you’re called away to caregiving duties at home or even in another state.

Caregiving can be a lonely responsibility, but it doesn’t have to be. Tune in to learn about better ways to cope, win, and live well while caring for those you love. The tips shared in this episode are ones you can start putting to use immediately!

  • Are you more prepared as a second time caregiver?

Being a caregiver has its joys and tough times, too. Sometimes we step into the role thinking that we are knowing what our job will be. But it’s hard to foresee how being a caregiver will interrupt our families, jobs, finances, relationships, and lives.

If you are or have been a caregiver, are you ready to do this once again?  Do you feel more prepared now for surprises, and think you know how to do the job better, or just as well as you did?  What happens when you’ve done this twice and now you have to step into the role a third, fourth, or even fifth time?

In this episode, my guests, Dr. Emily Mroz, and Amanda Piechota, from the Yale School of Medicine share their research and findings on how second, third, or multiple-time caregivers thought about their roles and whether they’re more prepared and willing to take this responsibility on again.

Would you do this again for others, such as a parent, family member, or even friend? You might be surprised to learn how other who have cared for a loved on - men and women alike in this role - are managing the second, third, and even fourth time around.

Dr. Mroz also develops tools and techniques to improve palliative care communication.
