"Plugging One's Ears to Steal a Bell" (掩耳盗铃, yǎn ěr dào líng) is a classic Chinese fable from the *Lüshi Chunqiu* (《吕氏春秋·自知》) of the late Warring States period, over 2,000 years old. The original tale was about a large bronze bell (钟, *zhōng*); over time, the story was retold with a smaller hand bell (铃, *líng*) that's more familiar today.
A man had his eye on a gorgeous bronze bell hanging outside a neighbor's door. Just one touch, though, and it jingled loudly! What to do? He thought and thought, and then — smack! — clapped himself on the forehead: "If I cover my own ears, I won't hear the bell — and if I can't hear it, nobody can!" Does that sound like a clever plan to you?
A warm voice and a gentle pace, bringing classic Chinese idiom fables to little ones ages 3-8. Chinese learners big and small are very welcome to tune in too!
