"The Mantis Stalking the Cicada" (螳螂捕蝉, táng láng bǔ chán) is a classic Chinese fable from *Shuoyuan* (《说苑·正谏》) by Liu Xiang of the Western Han dynasty, over 2,000 years old.
On a summer morning, a cicada perched high on a branch, singing his heart out — "jit-jit-jit!" — with no idea that a mantis was creeping up behind him, claws raised. The mantis, eyes locked on the cicada, didn't notice that behind *him* sat a small oriole, ready to pounce. And the oriole, focused only on the mantis, had no idea that at the foot of the tree stood a little boy with a slingshot... Each one saw only what was in front of him, forgetting to look behind.
