"Monkeys Fishing for the Moon" (猴子捞月, hóu zi lāo yuè) is an old Buddhist tale, brought to China in the translated scripture *Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya* (《摩诃僧祇律》), which was translated by the Eastern Jin monks Faxian and Buddhabhadra around 418 CE — more than 1,600 years ago. It has been loved by Chinese children ever since.
One bright moonlit night, a little monkey scampered to a well for a drink. Peering down, he got the shock of his life — the moon had fallen into the water! He cried out, and the whole troop came rushing over. Determined to rescue the moon, the monkeys hung from a tree branch in a long chain, one holding the tail of the next, all the way down to the water. The little monkey at the bottom reached out his hand — and the moon rippled away into pieces! Will they ever catch the moon?
