  • Lessons From This Past Month On Dealing With Overwhelm

I think now, more than ever, we as a people understand the feeling of overwhelm.

Over the past 2 years, we've dealt with all kinds of stressors: A world-wide pandemic. A faith transition. Political unrest. Climate change induced disasters. It feels like a lot because it is!

If you've been feeling tired, stressed out, anxious, ill, numb, irritable, or unmotivated because it feels like you're constantly being thrown curve balls and  can't catch a break...I know that feeling!

This week I draw from my own recent experience with overwhelm to discuss how to identify it and how to begin moving to resolve it.

If you've ever felt like you're the only person who doesn't have their life perfectly together, I'm hoping this episode will help you feel less alone and feel more hope about moving from overwhelm and into a place where there is more time to rest and recover.

  • The 7 Ingredients of Trusting Relationships

Have you ever had a relationship where you didn't feel entirely safe to be or express your full self?

Have you ever found yourself walking around on eggshells around a friend or family member?

Avoiding specific topics of conversation or stuffing difficulties in the relationship?

Do you find yourself arguing with those you love?

We ALL have relationships like this.

Often, we want to be closer to the people in our lives, but there is something there that keeps us from feeling completely safe to show up as our whole selves.

In this episode, we explore the 7 ingredients of trust Brené Brown discusses in her book, "Braving the Wilderness" and how they apply to our relationships with the people we love the most.

I specifically talk about how these principles apply to mixed faith relationships with parents, siblings, partners, and friends.

When we can communicate specifically where trust is being eroded, it makes it easier to correct these things and create more safety and intimacy in our relationships if both parties are willing to participate.

  • Moving Towards Healthy Anger Patterns

If you're afraid of what will happen if you let yourself feel anger, you're not alone.

Most of the examples of experiencing anger we witness are unhealthy examples. We learned to become aggressive, passive aggressive, or suppressive with our anger from watching those around us and responding to what was rewarded and what was punished in our households as a child.

We developed our own patterns of dealing with this powerful, protective emotion as a way to keep ourselves safe. Like all behavior patterns, what may have worked for us as a child might not work so well for us as an adult.

In this episode, we explore how we developed our protective anger patterns and how we can move from those into more reflective and assertive ways of moving through our anger.  _____________________________________________________________________________

  • Understanding the Gifts of Anger

Who was taught that anger was evil?

    That it could destroy lives?

    That it was poison?

    Yeah. Me too.

In this episode, we explore how this emotion serves us and helps us make healthy changes in our lives.

We use our anger to get out of soul-sucking work situations to abusive relationships. We also use our anger for social justice and societal change.

Come along with me as we explore the 5 attributes of anger talked about by Dr. Marcia Cannon in her book, "The Gift of Anger".

As we normalize anger, the way it works, and what information it gives us about ourselves we can harness this power to get the healthy lives we deserve to live.

  • Raising Ethical Children After Religion with Rachel from Post Mormon Parenting

Many of us were conditioned to believe that religion was the only way to raise ethical, empathic, and responsible children. If you are anything like me, you may have spent weeks worrying about how you were going to raise children with a strong moral compass after leaving high demand religion.

Rachel from Post Mormon Parenting really helped me answer this question with her insightful YouTube videos focused on parenting children outside of Mormonism. I realized that there was a wealthy of research and guidance available to me as a parent outside of the confines of religion to help my children develop a strong personal value system and live in accordance with it.

In this episode, we explore the natural moral development of children as well as the biggest thing that gets in the way of this development. We talk about how we, as parents, can support children to learn to use critical thinking skills and skepticism to not only understand the world around them, but develop more empathy and compassion in the process.
