In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Sylvia Kalcinski, a family and marriage therapist and the host of the Dr. Sylvia K podcast. She currently lives in Miami with her husband and son and has made it her mission to support people in finding courage, strength and the right tools to feel better through therapy. 

Sylvia and I met during our book proposal group and felt this instant connection. We unpack her own unlearning journey and how she reflects on what unlearning has looked at during different stages of her life. Her unique ability to understanding how overwhelming emotions can feel like they take over and impact our well-being and relationships. She believes that while we can't get rid of our emotions, we can however learn to better manage them and improve stress management. She focuses in mindfulness, dialectical behavior therapy and systemic therapies.

In this conversation, Sylvia lets us into her journey of navigating her own sense of belonging, safety, and connection and what she has had to unlearn in order to interrupt her own thought patterns that have kept her stuck. This is a heart-filled episode that allows us to understand the connection between our underlying beliefs that we hold about ourselves can be connected to the imprint that traumatic experiences can have on us.

This week, I sit down with Carla Marconi and talk about the need to unlearn the outdated belief that we need to hustle and grind it out in order to be successful. After spending 10 years playing it safe and doing what she felt she was “supposed to” as a Marketing and Sales Specialist, she finally took the leap into a life she loves. And now, she is teaching other women how to do the same.

Today, through her business mindset coaching offered through Soul Rhythm, she helps female entrepreneurs master the inner game of running their business, by upgrading their belief systems and business strategy, so they can fire the inner critic and become masterful business women. So much of what helped her step up into the woman she is today was learning to make decisions faster, constantly building her confidence, clearing energetic blocks and rising into her role as a LEADER.

What I loved about this conversation is the internalized story so many women have about the constant need to both hustle and prove; and how we eventually get to a point where we realize that is doesn't really serve our highest good. Carla is all about helping her clients achieve success; but is also really clear about helping women have more fun and create a bigger impact in the process.

This week, I share my thoughts about the inextricable link between validation and belonging. It's no secret that so many women struggle with chasing external validation in everything they can reach for - in the jobs we covet, in the partners we seek out to the friendship circles we gravitate towards. But what I have found is that it has very little to do with craving acceptance and approval and more to do with the fact that for years, we as women have not been encouraged to find acceptance in the place that it actually matters - within ourselves.

One of the most important pieces of advice I've been reminded by is that you have to, first and foremost, remember that you belong to yourself. As Brene Brown shares in her book, Atlas of the Heart, (which I geek out over in this episode by the way) she tells us that our yearning for belonging is so hardwired that we often try to acquire it by any means necessary - including trying to fit in and hustling for approval and acceptance. I find myself saying this over and over to women I coach and am in conversation with - those efforts are in fact hollow substitutes for belonging and they are also the greatest barriers. When we work to fit in and be accepted, our "belonging" is tenuous. 

Belonging is scary AF. We want it badly. At times, it can feel damn near close to life or death. Feeling a sense of belonging, of acceptance and of approval is beyond normal; but the risk of not receiving it can feel like a nasty blow to our ego. It makes us question the very essence of our worth.

Our saving grace will come from the very advice the queen herself (Brene Brown) gives in her book. Brene admittedlly is one of my many BFFs in my head and she shares that true belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are. Because we can feel belonging only if we have the courage to share our most authentic selves with people, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.

Let us keep being brave to remember that we don't have to change who we are, we just have to have the courage to be who we are.

In this week's episode, we unpack a topic that is so close to the bone for me and for so many of my sisters out there - and that is the need to be liked. I know that it has been the very thing that robs so many of us of the confidence we are building in ourselves because of our desperate need to know that others like us or approve of our decisions. Whether it shows up in continuous efforts to please people or feeling totally anxious when it comes to facing approval, many of us are completely fixated. 

I think we can all agree that women are taught from an early age to be pleasing, cheerful, and cute - which is the point where this fixation can get logjammed. And when the default expectation for women’s personalities is sweetness and pep, the world becomes a place where anything but isn't exactly tolerated. What is so deeply problematic about this expectation is that we’ve internalized this belief that legitimate feelings are somehow undesirable. And that we should plaster a fake smile on at anytime they’re hurt or angry or disappointed.

In episode 2 of Season 3, I share one of the earliest memories I have where I could remember my need to be liked forming. You would have thought that should have taught me in that moment that this need to please is for the birds. But no, it fueled it even more. The message in this episode is clear: unfortunately, not everyone will like you. But that’s okay. After all, the only person’s opinion of you that genuinely matters is your own. For those who resonate with this message, it's an encouraging word to stop living your life for other people, and start living it for yourself.

In this first episode of Season 3 of Embracing Enough (yay!), we're talking about the topic that I'm literally obsessed with and that is UNLEARNING.

And I'm so obsessed with it that I've decided to dedicate an entire season of the podcast to unpacking all of the things that we have unlearned and still need to unlearn. Now, when I talk about unlearning, I’m talking about letting go of all of the stories, the expectations, the should’s that we as women are told to uphold. Can we just consider putting it down because that shit is heavy. It’s a burden really. 

And what I’ve realized is that the propensity to want to fix things is a result of patriarchal systems that have been planted into women’s minds that have convinced us it is our responsibility to fix things and solve problems because it is what is expected of us.

Truthfully, my obsession with unlearning this year comes from a desire to have deeper, more honest conversations around the burdens we as women all carry and to consider putting it down. To claim the fire that lives within all of us without needing to look at things within ourselves to fix. To unlearn so much of the things we have been taught to believe that ultimately don't serve us in the fullest way. We’re talking unlearning the judgment, the shame, the stories that tell us to keep our suffering a secret, the belief that we have to do it all on our own, and the opinion that everyone else's needs have to come before our own.

I'm re-releasing this special episode that I recorded from the beaches of Cartagena. I actually recorded this special episode as I walked on the white sands in quiet reflection.

In fact, I recorded the episode on a day that I was having the MOST fun and realizing that my confidence has gotten a serious boost not from working on myself, but allowing myself to experience the fullness of this beautiful, fun, outrageous life I'm living. The key to confidence is having fun; and the more we allow ourselves the permission to step completely into it the more our confidence expands.

The journey to embodying your most confident self means welcoming in all the parts of you; and to welcome in all the parts of you means embracing your full self without apology. In this episode, Dina sits down with fellow coach and friend Andrea Mancuso. Andrea was born, raised and currently resides in Brooklyn. She's a lover of psychology, a mental health advocate and has loved supporting people for as long as she can remember. There are friends. There's family. And then there are friends who become family.

In this episode, I sit down with Janet, Katrina and Roberta - three women I met in the most serendipitous of ways on a recent trip to Cartagena, Colombia. 

On a day trip to a private island I went solo to for no other reason then to embrace my own fabulosity, I met four incredible women who just oozed confidence, grace and strength. 

We all ended up chatting in the ocean, became fast friends and shared stories. We shared the highs, the lows, the in-between, and the wisdom. We shared what we were working on, what we're reaching for in the new year, and how grateful we are for deep friendship. We all agreed, friendship has been the very thing that has gotten us all through.

Not only did these women help me celebrate my actual birthday in Cartagena, they shared their wisdom of the power of friendship and what it has done for them. We talk about these lessons here in this episode and hear more about their own stories that have formed them into the unstoppable women they are. Getting to know these women was restorative in ways I didn't even know I needed and it showed me the power of deep, meaningful authentic friendship with women. In this episode, I reflect on the better part of the last year and all that I have made a conscious choice to let go of. Letting go was my intention for 2021 and it was the first time I tried on setting an intention as opposed to a resolution.

Truth be told, I thought that 2021 was going to be different somehow. I began this year with so much hope along with a deep belief that it was going to be a year of new beginnings. 2021 would usher in the year I turned 40, celebrate a year in my business and have some of the most heart-opening inner work that I had ever experienced to date.  I felt like I was on the brink of major shifts that were going to have me feeling like I finally hit my stride.

I never felt like I hit a stride, just a constant unearthing of what more I had to let go of and UNLEARN. It turned out that 2021 would require me to take my intention of LETTING GO to a whole new level. It would require me to practice letting go a little more every day. Letting go of everything I thought I was, letting go of my false sense of security, letting go of deep pain and trauma I had been living with for several decades, letting go of what I thought my life should look and feel like, and the biggest one for me – letting go of control.

For years, I was so focused on my future that I was blind to the fact that in order to start something new, I had to make room for new things in my life and let go of things that no longer aligned.  I talk about all of the things I let go - some I knew I would have to and others I resisted all the way. In the end, I'm beyond grateful for everything this year taught me and for all that I'm still learning. My hope is for those who listen, they can take some inspiration in taking stock of letting go of the things that no longer serve them.
