Dr. Mnich has navigated living between cultures - from being a Polish refugee living in Germany, to studying in South Africa, to now living in the US. In this special (unplanned) episode in honor of Halloween, Dina unpacks the thing that she feels is truly scary (and no, we're not talking ghost stories). We talk about being stuck in the same place or situation for longer than you would like to admit - months, a year, hell, even YEARS! And she chooses to go deep in a topic that she typically shies away from - relationships, and more specifically, moving on.

As women, we may not understand why moving on is scary when we are clearly so not satisfied with where things stand in that relationship. And it's scary to think how comfortable you have gotten with the way things stand. So comfortable that you don’t even realize how tightly you are holding on because of how terrified you are of the uncertainty moving on would bring.

The most frightening part of it all when trying to reconcile in letting go is the uncomfortable truth that along the way, we realize we have gotten used to a certain level of sadness and the pain. Because the pain and the sadness grew to something that you learned to tolerate, it became a part of who you were. And eventually, it became the thing that defined you. 

What sparked this idea for this episode is a past trip to Atlanta for a conference called EpicCon hosted by Aprille Franks. Dina shares what embarassing moment she had and recounts what awakened in her as a result.

In this week's episode, Dina sits down with Founder of Date Brazen, Lily Womble, an unconventional dating coach dedicated to helping women build a clear path to the best relationship of their life. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama and having moved to New York City where she calls home, Lily has always been deeply committed to supporting women and helping them thrive. 

From starting a nonprofit to end sex trafficking in Alabama, to working for an international women's right's organization, she never thought she'd work in the dating world, until during one fateful career change…she became a matchmaker at a national firm. She later realized that the dating world was a way she could help women be well and rise. Because from her own story and from the stories of hundreds of clients, it was clear that dating was a microcosm of every fear, hope, and insecurity that we have in this life. 

Lily sits down and shares her story and how she felt navigating different life transitions. She talks to us about being raised around people who measured women's value on whether or not they were married; to her move to New York to pursue her love of musical theatre to starting her own company to falling in love. Lily shares that from the time she could speak, she knew she was sensitive, loud, opinionated, enthusiastic. And subsequently was labeled "too much" by many. And in a world where women are told to be small, take up less space, she always felt like she  didn't fit in.

Today, Lily works with women for the sole purpose of supporting them in feeling confident as they are in exactly who they are. She helps other badass women learn how to trust themselves to qualify the right dates and disqualify the wrong ones; how to set boundaries and stick to them.

As part of my #40to40 countdown, I'm bringing you another one of my lessons that I've learned through my almost 40 years on the planet. The lesson: be grateful for some solitude.

Why are we so scared to be with ourselves. I unpack the real questions and what can be possible when we just get still. 

Before the pandemic, I was constantly running. Running to happy hours with friends, teaching multiple Zumba classes a week, running to make sure I had errands done on my lunch hour and being the perfect mix of social and reliable in work and in my personal life. It was exhausting. Plus, it kept me in this perpetual chase that there was always something I needed to be working on, perfecting, doing and fulfilling expectations that I knew others expected of me.

Being through over 18 months of this new normal, its had me dispel this gnawing illusion that I desperately needed something dangling just out of reach in the perpetual future. And by letting that illusion fall away, or what’s more, having me let go of the illusion, has had me make time for decisions that are grounded and realistic.

Let's start by giving ourselves the permission to be with ourselves and realize how much of a good time we are just as we are.

As part of my #40to40 countdown, I'm bringing you another one of my lessons that I've learned through my almost 40 years on the planet. The lesson: nobody ACTUALLY cares about your goals.

The real question we need to be asking more consistently are not how will we achieve our goals, but what goals ACTUALLY matter to us?

I've spent the majority of my life feeling safe and "on track" when I have had goals that I'm working towards. But then, I am left feeling eventually let down once it's been achieved. Why? It's because I've never truly been connected to my larger why.

Whether you're obsessed with goals or not, I think this topic warrants more conversation about what's really motivating us behind getting after these goals.

Here's what I know: setting and achieving goals doesn't make you happier. It just makes you more productive. There is a huge difference between being 'happy' and 'effective'. And people tend to confuse the two.

Let's start giving ourselves the permission to chase the goals that have real meaning to us; not the ones that we tell ourselves we 'should' be chasing.

Let's talk about SEX baby! Wait, what??

If you ask a teen-aged boy what constitutes bad sex, he’s likely to talk about the fact that he wasn’t all that attracted or that he didn’t have an orgasm. If you ask a girl of similar age about bad sex, she’s going to talk about pain, humiliation, or degradation — something that just doesn’t come up with boys. She probably won’t even mention affirmative lack of pleasure, because we’re still too often teaching both boys and girls that female sexual pleasure is just not a priority. Good sex means not being treated badly or not having too much discomfort — at least as far as girls go.

I’m sorry — I’m just not OK with that!

In today's episode, I want to be open and talk to any woman who has felt the need to use sex as a way to feel wanted, desired, loved, or validated. There is zero judgment in this conversation. I’m wanting to talk through this because I don’t think it’s talked about enough, and because I’m literally obsessed with talking about topics that are in some shape or form connected to how enough we do or do not feel, I feel like we had to go there. Come on, I’m about to be 40. It’s time. 

I'm by no means a sex expert or a relationship coach. In fact, I typically avoid talking about sex or love at all costs. But something in me has me wanting to open up more about topics that I have tended to shy away from. Not because I'm an expert, but because in approaching 40 and in my #40to40 celebration, I'm embracing the decade of being unapologetic. And that means, I’m no longer willing to shy away from topics that intimidate me. So here it goes...my most vulnerable episode yet.

The relationship a daughter has with her father is a special one. I think we could agree that a father has the potential to influence his daughter's life in a ton of ways - from her self-esteem, to her confidence, to self-image, and ultimately the relationships she forms with a partner. In today's episode, my Dad (Rocco Scippa) aka the Comeback Kid shares his reflections on his fair share of successes and failures. Rocco muses about it's all been worth it (even the lows) and how it's all contributed to what has made him a better person today. 

In his brutally honest, unapologetic style, Rocco lets you into his life by sharing what it was like growing up as an Italian immigrant in East Boston, navigating fatherhood, his addiction, and how he climbed to the top of his career as a real estate developer - even when the stakes were against him. The approaches he's taken to facing the highs and the lows of his life have been inspiration for me.

If you take anything from his adorable storytelling style, I hope its a laugh and a nugget of wisdom that you can apply to your life. My dad is an embodiment of the ultimate form of betting on yourself, even when the chips are down and there's few people who believe in you. 

Let this episode serve as a reminder to you that sometimes the relationships that form with our parents may not always be easy to understand, but we can learn to appreciate them later in life.

We all have to shake things up from time to time. In this episode, I decided to do something different and just speak from my heart. No script, no research, just me. Recording from my family's home in Massachusetts, I explore what has been my dirty little payoff to staying stuck in certain patterns with my family and how they come back in full FUEGO whenever I come home. Something about this trip has me realizing that it may be time to FINALLY shift from that place where I've been stuck rather than hoping in vain that the change I desire will come about magically and painlessly.

What I realize is that when you've mastered yourself but still come up against internal resistance (because you always do), you're able to acknowledge it, and work through it with trust. What I'm learning is that openness and awareness are at the heart of the process and the mind’s role is to identify and let go of the emotions that can stop you from following their heart’s directives.

Let this episode be a reminder to trust yourself enough to move beyond the patterns that have kept you comfortable and stuck playing small. You may surprise yourself how much these "comfortable" behavior patterns aren't serving you.
