From a Mind Map perspective, childhood wounds of neglect or abuse create bad blueprints that communicate to the child and later adult that relationships are not safe on some level. Better to close off and not get too close...   For those who are either emotionally unavailable or are with someone who is emotionally unavailable it is a good idea to self-reflect and self-correct on behaviors that push away others and create human disconnect on the one hand, or demand too much, creating a smothering effect.   It is painful when one wants more closeness and the other more distance. A good predictor of relationship satisfaction is space requirements.
