Amanda Hebert Hughes, a New York native, is an openly autistic painter and author living in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.

Having an active, neurodivergent mind, she is the founder of the new art genre: Sensory Gated Art®️.

Using her unique painting style, Amanda creates paintings that remove sensory overload stimuli, resulting in a calming effect.

She is also the author and illustrator of the children's book series, Why Does Mommy Say. Using first-person perspective, Amanda connects the dots for young minds between love and healthy boundaries.

Kevin Caffrey is the senior associate registrar at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA.

He has been working in higher education for nearly 25 years and earned an Ed.D. in higher education leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University and a master's degree in English from Long Island University. His research interests include communication, leadership, and inclusivity.

He is also a singer/songwriter and musician with several independently released albums to his name. He also designed a course he teaches to first-year students at the University of Mary Washington entitled “You Have to Listen To This: Connecting Through Music” that explores why we gravitate towards the music that we do, and why sharing the music we love with others is a powerful way to cultivate empathetic connections.

Why relying too heavily on "empathetic AI" could be problematic

What does it mean when the AI tolds me his ability to demonstrate empathy is more akin to psychopathic behaviour?

What leads AI to believe empathy is a significant and valuable trait akin to a superpower in its own right.?

I carried out an experiment using a very well known AI platform, 'interviewing' the AI as a guest to see if anything would be learnt on the topic. The answers surprised, engaged, and I must admit scared me a little.

I thought it only fair to offer a few minutes on my understanding of empathy. I have a mantra that runs through my life, one that I truly believe in; 'it doesn't need to be that difficult'. We often over complicate situations, we wait until we're 100% certain before we act, we see the negative as opposed to the positive. I firmly advocate taking a positive approach and recognising that most things in life don't need to the difficult. Embracing empathy helps every part of our lives.
