I'm excited to welcome Edmund Velasco to this week's podcast! As a professional saxophonist, Edmund spent many years as a working Disneyland musician, and now leads the Orange County, CA musicians union. In his role as a labor advocate, Edmund has been instrumental in seeing transformative pro-worker legislation passed in the state of California, and in empowering his members to take action to win what they need to thrive as working musicians. If you ever wondered why artists need unions, this is a great episode to check out! As a saxophonist in Souther California, Edmund Velasco has made many guest appearances with Joe LaBarbara, Tony Dumas, Ron Eschete and many others. He has also performed twice at the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. Edmund has performed at many important local venues, including the Baked Potato, L.A.'s Catalina Bar & Grill, The San Jose Jazz Festival, The Manoshinos Festival and The Funchal Jazz Festival. He has played professionally for over thirty five years with such top names as Mel Torme, Eddie Daniels, Ernie Andrews, Barbara Morrison and many others. His quintet has four CD releases and he has appeared in many other projects. He was also a full time musician at Disneyland for 28 years. Edmund has served on the Executive Board for the Orange County Musicians Association, Local 7, for the past 18 years and now serves as President. He has participated in the fight for Disney workers including hosting and moderating the Abigail Disney’s documentary The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales, AMPTP actions with the RMA, Unionizing Graduate students from the UC system, Medieval Times strike and others. Edmund is also involved with Arts organizations. He is on the board for California Arts Advocates, Arts OC and VP of California for the Arts and. He is actively seeking help from legislator to change State laws to empower musicians throughout California.

Richard has performed as an oboe soloist, chamber and orchestral musician worldwide, and specializes in contemporary music and HIP (Historically informed practice) on period instruments. He has been Chair of Music at CSU Dominguez Hills, and was the founding Director of the School of Music and Theatre at Marshall University as well as the Director of the School of Music at the University of Southern Mississippi. Currently Dr. Kravchak serves as Dean of the School of Arts and Letters at the College of Southern Nevada, our nation’s 5th largest Community College. This week, my instrument had a nearly fatal accident. I was shocked, panicked, fearful, and mostly mad at myself. Thankfully, it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been.

This event made me wonder, "how am I safeguarding not only my instrument, but my inner artist as well?"
