In 2018, musicians of the Boise Philharmonic (Boise, ID) decided that they needed to take action to gain more respect for their work.
They build a traditional worker-led union campaign from the ground up--as workers at Starbucks, Amazon, and many other fields are doing.
But aren't unions just for "blue collar," or to use a worse phrase, "unskilled" workers? Why would so-called "artists" need a union in the first place?
I'm glad to be welcoming Carmen Izzo to the podcast, who, with a handful of other colleagues, grew their small committee of 5 to a movement of musicians who not only won a union in their workplace, but founded the only current local musicians union in the state of Idaho.
Carmen Izzo President, Greater Idaho Musicians' Association, Local 423 AFM Principal Clarinet, Boise Philharmonic Orchestra Asst.
Principal Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Las Vegas Philharmonic Clarinet Instructor, The College of Idaho Adjunct Faculty, Northwest Nazerene University 961 E Holly St Boise, ID 83712
Why artists need unions is a question that many ask but few understand. In this episode, we will examine the anatomy of a successful union campaign, and dive into why "artists" are workers too. Don't miss it!

Michael Manley equips professional musicians and performing artists with the off-instrument tools, skills, knowledge, and strategies they need to build and thrive in their careers.
He also helps musicians who are recovering from injury, returning or beginning instrumental study, or those who are transitioning from performance careers to develop a healthy artist mindset as they manage change.
