And the answer is...
The lost piece must be a Queen in this puzzle. While a bishop could control the same squares, there is no legal way this position could be reached for a bishop. The bishop would have been on this same diagonal for Black’s last move, meaning Black would have had to play something illegal to reach this position.
A Queen however could move to h1 from h2 or g1 to deliver checkmate.
