Sterling deVries epitomizes ENERGY in the classroom!  She is passionate and dedicated to providing opportunities for students to be fully engaged and confident in their learning.

Sterling taught at two different Charleston County Schools, teaching all grades 1-5 before becoming the Director of Education at the Gaillard Center where she supports community engagement and all of their education-based programs.

And that is no small feat - the Gaillard Center just reached their 100,000th student!  WOOHOO!  

All performances are connected to the state standards, and transportation is included for Title 1 schools.  Listen in to hear some of the upcoming shows, all of which include pre-and post-workshops for K-12 students.

Robin and Ron have such a fun conversation with artist Tate Nation talking about his unique Caribbean-inspired art.

Robin discovered Tate’s art during the pandemic while at home putting together several of his 550-piece puzzles that are all based on his incredibly whimsical and colorful Charleston-based paintings.

According to CareerTech.org, Career Technical Education (CTE) provides students of all ages with the academic and technical skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed in future careers and to become lifelong learners. In total, about 12 million high school and college students are enrolled in CTE across the nation. CTE prepares these learners for the world of work by introducing them to workplace competencies, and makes academic content accessible to students by providing it in a hands-on context. In fact, the high school graduation rate for CTE concentrators is about 90 percent – 15 percentage points higher than the national average.

We know kids get excited playing video games and solving puzzles! Sometimes, as parents, we have to pull them away to “work on their schoolwork.”  Listen in to hear about a game that is changing the way we engage and excite kids about digital learning, specifically in the cyber security and CTE space.

There are about 800,000 cyber jobs available right now.  Our country is struggling to fill those positions.

Weather is a SC state curriculum standard in kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grades.  Today Robin and Ron talk with Dave Williams, Chief Meteorologist, with ABC News 4 in Charleston, South Carolina who has experienced all kinds of weather from blizzards and tornadoes to hurricanes and graupel. 

Even though Dave’s 2nd grade teacher did not support his love of weather, Dave did not let that deter him.  While at Ohio State, he assumed he’d work at the National Weather Service after graduation but changed his mind during an internship for NBC 4 in Columbus, Ohio, when a colleague convinced him to try television…and the rest is history!  For the past 25 years Dave has been forecasting the weather because he “loves what Mother Nature can do.”

Shout out to James B. Edwards Elementary teachers: Ashley Pomposelli, Kindergarten and Miranda Britt, 2nd grade who shared their favorite weather books for students.

Kara Wells, Founder and Owner of Lena Marie, an online clothing boutique named after her great grandmother, always had a passion for fashion.  Art was her favorite subject in school, and even though she didn’t follow her original dream of becoming an art teacher, Kara taps into her creativity in so many ways like putting outfits together for her customers and creating amazing content for social media.

Robin compares Kara to successful entrepreneurs like Anita Roddick (The Body Shop) and Roxanne Quimby (Burt’s Bees) who saw opportunities where others did not.  Early in her career Kara realized there was a gap in the fashion industry … size inclusivity; and she is making it her mission to change that. 

Kara believes that no matter where we are in life everyone should feel good in their clothes and that’s why she doesn’t just sell clothes, she teaches women what works best with their bodies, and how to mix and match so our outfits work with the busy lives we lead.

Susan Antonelli is a 4th generation educator with 26 years of experience who credits much of her success to her mother Lucy Beckham, a highly respected educator who passed away a few years ago but continues to live on through all the lives she touched, including those who attend the recently opened Lucy Beckham High School, named in her memory.

Susan has that same drive and passion, and it shows daily in her role as the Sr. Educational Strategist at Engaging Creative Minds (ECM) where she works with Robin. The mission of Engaging Creative Minds is to spark creativity and curiosity in all learners through innovative and experiential learning.

The two share a passion for providing arts experiences to children across South Carolina and for supporting teachers and principals in their professional development. They are always looking for new artists to work in ECM programs during the school year, after school, and summer camps.

Mindy Allen, Founder and Creator of The Nesting Guide, shares her journey from the birth of her son in 2002, when she immediately knew something was wrong, but didn’t know what, to when he was first diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder.  After many frustrating years, it was determined his symptoms were caused by gestational lead poisoning which occurred during the renovation of Mindy’s 1925-year-old home in North Carolina. 

After ten years of researching endless data, Mindy pays it forward with the Nesting Guide, launching on November 28, 2022, designed to better safeguard maternal health and wellness.

Robin and Ron talk with Terry Wilfong, retired U.S. Army Officer and Founder & President of the College Options Foundation.  Terry is one of the nation’s top experts on admissions and financing college.  He has produced creative college success internet-based software and testing materials for students and school systems worldwide.  While working as Security Director under Colin Powell, Terry was honored as the 1st recipient of the MacArthur Award.

Terry shares his humble journey of being arrested for a felony in his early teens to joining the military police through Project 100,000, also known as McNamara’s 100,000, where he and his friends could choose jail or the military.  

Terry chose the Army, and the rest is history!
