There are 2 million people in the nation's prisons and jails.  Robin talks with Radia Baxter, Director of Programs and Education at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in Charleston, South Carolina about how the detention center works to change the residents' mindset, to greatly impact themselves, their families, and their communities.

Radia talks about the "pause moments" and how trust is the key for her pushing the residents out of those moments and toward positive change.  What an incredible episode with someone who is impacting the lives of so many.

On today's episode we talk to Katie Blomquist, former 1st grade teacher at Pepperhill Elementary School, who is taking the world by storm with her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for serving her community.  No one wants great teachers to leave the classroom, but sometimes it the right thing!  Katie story is a beautiful example of teachers who feel compelled to leave the classroom for something greater, in Katie's case, providing bikes for her students, and helping others follow their passion and live their dream lives.  Katie is a big thinking visionary with so much passion, and as so many entrepreneurial stories go, that led from one thing to another and now Katie is changing lives all across Charleston, South Carolina. and beyond.  We had so much fun talking to Katie.  Enjoy this episode.  We sure did!

Today's guest is Marybeth Clark, Actor, Director, Arts Educator, who serves as Director of Education and Associate Artistic Director at Charleston Stage Theatre.

Robin and Marybeth met when their daughters, now in their early 20s, were in Kindergarten, and have remained friends partly due to their mutual imperfections.  Marybeth as an effective educator who is respected and loved by every student she teachers, no matter what age.  Her quick thinking humorous responses to various student behaviors is so simple but yet so effective.  It's all about where she directs or redirects the energy.  

Marybeth shares why teachers, like actors, need to know their audience and explains how she reads the room to find the student(s) with the most energy. Today's episode is chock-full of examples of keeping the busiest and loudest students engaged in their learning, including one story about how she redirected a group of boys who kept falling on the floor during her lesson. 

In school as in life, Marybeth believes success comes from embracing what we see and then figuring out what to do with it!  Amen to that!

Robin responds to a listener's question about the value and impact of scripted vs. unscripted curriculum as well as her thoughts on teaching phonics vs. Whole Language.  

Every decade has produced geniuses, inventors, entrepreneurs, and artists who have impacted our world - YAY!  So that means schools are doing something right!

What's interesting is, no matter what decade you're from, the teaching strategies, and educational "fads" always come around again, just like fashion.  Educators keep revisiting educational philosophies. 

Robin takes us on a journey starting in the late 1800s when scripted curriculum began, traveling right through to the first half of the twentieth century with John Dewey and Einstein, into the 80s and 90s with Lucy Caulkins and Regie Routman, and then landing in this current moment today when many school districts across the country are adopting scripted curriculum.  WHEW!  No wonder teachers are exhausted!

Robin talks with Dr. Tracey Hunter-Doniger, college professor and author about the impact creativity had on her life and what inspired her to be a teacher. Growing up on a farm in rural Indiana with a learning disability was a challenge, but Tracey overcame that to achieve her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher, eventually obtaining her doctorate degree.  Now, one of the most highly respected and requested college professors at the College of Charleston, Department Chair and Associate Professor in Education, she inspires future educators and is the author of Experiencing the Arts: Creative Arts in Education, a textbook for future educators.

Tracey shares her experiences visiting German and Italian schools that use the environment as the 3rd teacher, providing their students with more choice, and endless opportunities to be creative, something most American schools rarely, if ever, get to spend the entire day doing.  Very young students build with real tools and participate in real life experiences to understand the world around them; 3-year-olds whittle with a knife, 5 year olds build wooden structures using real tools like saws, nails, and hammers, to understand engineering and math concepts.  Supporting creativity in early childhood and giving children choice are core values in Italy’s Reggio Emilia and Germany’s Forest Schools where teacher turnover is a whopping ZERO!

We lean into the conversation of what could happen if we shine a light on the possibilities, and instead of focusing on what could go wrong if we give a kid a hammer, we consider what could go right!

Glossophobia:  the fear of public speaking.  According to Forbes it affects approximately 25% of the population and it isn’t going away so how can we embrace public speaking and encourage kids to get in front of an audience.
