  • Is it Worth Fighting Unfair Treatment At Work?

What should you do when you get treated unfairly at work? Explore 3 key options including “Is it worth fighting unfair treatment at work?”

I also include 4 key tactics to improve your success in fighting unfair treatment at work from colleagues and unfair managers.

There will be many occasions where you feel you are being treated unfairly at work. Most of the times these will be minor or un-intended mistakes made by colleagues or managers that are not repeated regularly.

There are lots of sensible ways of handle unfair treatment at work when it is fairly minor.

In this podcast, I am covering unfair treatment in the workplace which is intentional and repeated regularly, or bullying, or similar tactics intended to control and put you down in some way.

Having to handle an unfair manager or deal with significant unfair treatment at work is not fun or easy.

Being unfairly treated at work over a period of time leaves you with three main choices:

    1.                Continue ignoring the unfair treatment or do little in response

    2.                Leave and get a job in another company

    3.                Fight the unfair treatment

Who is treating your unfairly is pretty huge. How does their influence within the business compare to yours. The bigger this difference is, the harder it will be to change their unfair treatment.

Finding a new job in another company is a hassle and it does take time and effort. This is a common response and often is the easiest, particularly if you can move jobs easily. If you have a bad boss, this is probably your easiest choice.

Doing nothing or little in response as a way to handle unfair treatment at work can be a good choice. If the unfair treatment is for a short period of time and you know it will end. This will avoid the risk of creating waves or being labelled as a problem employee.

If doing nothing is impacting your ability to your work, or your health, then look at other options.

Fighting unfair treatment at work will take time and energy. There are steps that you should take that will make any action you take more successful which I cover in the video.

Is it worth fighting unfair boss depends on what is at stake and the difference in influence both parties have within the business.

I also share my experience to deal with unfair treatment at work. I have tried doing nothing, leaving and fighting, each with pros and cons for me personally.

  • 6 Positive Ways to Manage Negative Feedback at Work – Make Use of Negative Feedback

Receiving negative feedback at work can be a devasting blow for some or an amazing opportunity for others.

I share 6 positive ways to manage negative feedback at work so you can transform all feedback into a valuable learning opportunity.

If you have worked hard, getting negative feedback from your manager or getting negative feedback from a colleague can be a painful blow. It hurts.

Don’t assume the worst. Most managers make negative comments at work to correct or improve what you are doing rather than to try to put you down.

Learning how to deal with negative feedback at work in a constructive and positive way will help your confidence and how quickly you learn and thus improve.

When you are dealing with negative feedback at work ask clarifying questions. Ask questions until you understand why the negative comments have been made and what you can do to ensure positive comments next time. Don’t assume that managers or colleagues will give you great useful feedback from the start. Ask questions.

When you have to deal with negative comments at work made to try to put you down, asking clarifying questions can be a great and professional way to counter it and reduce these comments.

A key part of how to accept feedback from your boss or anyone is to be appreciative of the feedback. Thank them for taking the time to give you feedback even if you don’t agree with the feedback. This ensures you will carry on getting feedback which is a massive help to you.

When you respond to negative feedback always think – “What can I learn from this?” This is a great way to stay mentally positive and turn negative feedback into a useful learning opportunity.

A great way to manage negative feedback at work is to take positive action following receiving negative feedback. This helps you and demonstrates that you will make changes following receiving negative feedback.

Finally, ask for feedback regularly, particularly if you are a manager. The more senior you get, the less useful feedback you get so make the effort to try to get as much as possible.

What you do with the time you have and the impact you make is the difference between great and poor. How we manager time as a manager is what we can change, not time itself.

A critical way to create time as a manager and for our teams is saying no. No to requests that are less important than the work you are currently doing, no to meetings in which you are not going to contribute much.

You can save time as a manager, a lot of time, by focusing on the activities, tasks, decisions, problems and projects that really move the team towards their goals. How to create time as a manager to say not to all the tasks and activities that do not align with your goals.

The second critical way to leverage time – your time and your team’s time – is to focus on removing problems. If you spend an hour solving a problem that you team are experiencing which creates 10 hours of time for your team, this is a great way of leveraging your time.

Proactively removing problems is also a great way increase your time as a manager.

Another way to leverage time as a manager is to leverage the time of others. I share 3 key ways of doing this – each practical and implementable. As a manager, you work through others, rather than contributing directly. This makes leveraging the time of others more important and a key focus in how to get more done at work.

When thinking about how to manage your time, the forth way to leverage time is to invest in automation. IT systems are an obvious route. These can be complex and involve business cases and budget allocations to enable them to happen. There are a lot of smaller “automations” that you can target that have less impact on their own, but when added together become very meaningful to your team.

Leveraging time is more than employing a number of time management tips or time management strategies which tend to focus on prioritising or delegating work – both of which shift work and time rather than increasing the time the team as a whole has.

Use these ways to leverage time as a manager and you will create time for yourself and your team, you will be able to focus more of the time available on the tasks, problems and projects that really matter to the team reaching their goals.

Learning how to manager time better is really how to manage what work you do and what you don’t do.

All great managers get the best from those they manage, through how they behave and the actions and decisions they take.

What great managers do is move from focusing on themselves to focusing on their team members. Great managers work through, and deliver through, their team rather working directly as they did when they were a team contributor. This is one of the key principles of effective management.

Another principle of the best managers is to leverage time. We all have a fixed amount of time every day. It is what the manager and more importantly the team does with its time each day that really matters. How to be a better manager always includes making better use of time to create value for the business.

Being results focused is always in the mindset of the best managers. Businesses need to deliver results and the outcome their customer want otherwise they would not stay in business. Therefore all the teams in the business also need to deliver results. What to focus the team’s time and energy on is always in the mindset of great managers.

Another key mindset of a great manager is being focused on team development. Helping the team create great results is partly about getting the team working at the top of their capabilities. Getting great results is also about expanding the capabilities of the team so they can deliver more. Development also has a long list of benefits for the manager, the team and the company.

Developing teams is a key way managers answer the “how do managers create value?” question.

How to improve communication and connections is also in the mindset that make the best managers. Teamwork is about co-ordination and understanding. Communication and connections create teamwork.

“How to become the best manager?” you might ask. Building self-awareness and awareness of their teams is certainly the mindset of a manager. If you are not able to manage yourself, they how can you manage other effectively.

Self-awareness is definitely what's in the mindset of a great manager. Conscious knowledge and awareness of your own reactions and emotions across all situations helps you control and direct those reactions and emotions constructively to help the team achieve its goals.

Great management starts with your mindset and attitude. Use this podcast on “The Mindset of The Best Managers – 6 Principles For Great Management” to check that you are working on each principle or mindset to improve how you manage.

The process to improve your decision making should start with being clear on your goals and your team’s and company’s goals. By aligning goals more carefully, you can cut down the time spent on a lot of decisions, reducing that feeling of being over-loaded.

One of the key methods to improve your decision making is to think about the impact of the decision you need to make before doing starting the core decision making process. This allows you to categorise the decision and the time you allocate to it.

Another step to improve your decision making at work is to look at the downsides of each decision and remove those that have large downside from consideration.

When decision making in management, avoiding making key decision in a rush is vital. Make full use of the timeframes available by creating decision making space.

Keeping an open mind during the decision making process in business is such an important tip and has been massively helpful to me over the years.

Using data to check other people’s opinions during the decision making process helps remove others biases and preconceptions from clouding your own judgement. Understanding the situation clearly upon which you are making a decision gives you a better chance of making a good choice.

Effective listening skills at work are underrated and underused by far too many people trying to get their own messaging heard. Learn and practice how to listen effectively, and others will be a lot more prepared to listen to you.

Improving listening skills is about how to improve your communication skills , vital in any role and particularly so in management roles.
