A burlesque is a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects. The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which, in turn, is derived from the Italian burla – a joke, ridicule or mockery.

But you know what's not a joke, ridicule or mockery? The hard work that goes into those shows! We brought on hattie from Cincinnati's own smoke and queers to talk about all things burlesque and drag, as well as putting on a burlesque show. So Entertain This...

Dystopia can mean a lot of different things, and most rational people agree that they wouldn't want to live in any dystopian society, whether real or fictional. But what happens when people are so happy that they don't have a reason to care about the state of things? Then I guess you'd get a Brave New World. We'll be talking about this classic book by Aldous Huxley in this episode and see how he thought the world would be different 500 or so years after Our Ford. In 1895, a man by the name of Georges Polti was deep into analyzing classical Greek texts and had the epiphany that all those ancient stories could be distilled into just 36 different dramatic situations. So that's what we're talking about today, as we pick up the torch where he left off all those years ago. We'll be reading through these situations and applying them to modern-day movies to provide a basis for our own exploration of today's narratives. A kid who grew up with us? Check. Ancient Greek gods? Check. Both in the same story? It can only be the series of young adult fantasy novels known as Percy Jackson and the Olympians. While the Olympians in this story may not be competing for any medals, they have something special about them—one of their parents are divine, and they all end up in the same summer camp. Seems like a recipe for disaster, but the only real disaster is the movie they made from the first book. And that's what we'll be talking about today on Entertain This...
