In December 2009, Susan Powell vanished from her Utah home after her husband, Josh Powell, claimed he’d taken their two young sons on a spontaneous, late-night winter camping trip. Almost immediately, his detached demeanor and shifting explanations raised red flags. As investigators looked closer, a darker picture came into focus: a controlling marriage, Susan’s escalating fear, and a handwritten letter she had secretly written—one that warned if anything happened to her, it probably was not an accident, even if it looked like one. Still, without a body or definitive proof, the case stalled, and Susan seemed to vanish into uncertainty.
For more than two years, Susan’s family begged for action, but police seemed to be waiting for something—waiting for more evidence, for Susan to be found, who knows.
Horrifically, that waiting would prove catastrophic. In 2012, the case ended not with resolution, but with unimaginable violence that wiped out what remained of the Powell family. Susan Powell’s body has never been recovered, and the question at the center of it all remains unanswered. What happened to Susan Powell? This is A Trial by Podcast—and we’ll let you be the judge.
