The volunteers participated in a scientific experiment. What happened?

It was back in 1961 that an ad was placed in a newspaper asking for volunteers to be involved in a university experiment. Those who answered the ad, had no idea that they were about to participate in a study which would become one of the most famous and controversial experiments in history.
