1. 大一 (Dà yī): first year of university. freshmen year

2. 住宿 (Zhù sù): accommodation; most freshmen will be required to live in the university dorm for the first semester

3. 情況特殊 (Qíng kuàng tè shū): to have a slightly different situation

4. 私立 (Sī lì) : private

5. 公立 (Gōng lì) : public

6. 少子化 (Shǎo zǐ huà) : decreasing birth rate

7. 雙語幼稚園 (Shuāng yǔ yòu zhì yuán) : bilingual kindergarten

8. 注音符號 (Zhùyīn fúhào): Mandarin Phonetic Symbols, or the Bopomofo

9. 托嬰中心 (Tuō yīng zhōngxīn): babysitting center

10. 不是很理想的狀態 ( Bùshì hěn lǐxiǎng de zhuàngtài) : not very ideal

11. 趕進度 (Gǎn jìndù) : to try to catch up

12. 低年級 (Dī niánjí): usually refer to grade 1 and grade 2 in primary school

13. 學科 ( Xuékē) : subject

14. 升學壓力 (Shēngxué yālì) : the study pressure

16. 段考 (Duàn kǎo) : term exam

17. 美術 (Měishù) : though it can be roughly translated to "art," Taiwanese students do more than art in this course.

26. 放牛班 (Fàng niú bān) : refer to the class with the worst academic achievement and therefore is neglected by teachers. Students of 放牛班 often come from low SES families with little support.
