A brief first episode to introduce myself to the podcasting world. The Stain and Seal Experts Podcast is an informative home improvement talk show geared towards DIYers and contractors alike.
Bringing you How-to's, interviews, expert advice and reviews from industry leaders from all areas of the the stain and seal community. Streaming from Nashville Tennessee I am your host Caleb Roth.
This Podcast is for home owners, DIYers, contractors, concrete stainers, fence and deck stainers, pressure washing companies, painting companies, and anyone in the stain and seal field.
Its time to forget everything you've ever heard about staining and sealing, you've been told the wrong thing over and over again. I have been in the fencing and staining industry since I was a small child and every year I was told something different from lumber reps, manufacturers and colleagues about when to stain your wood, when to seal your concrete, what to use and how to do it and it drove me nuts. So I started a stain and seal company because I enjoyed doing staining projects and I have grown the business to be the largest and most well known stain and seal company in the Southeast the company is Stain & Seal Experts. stainandsealexperts.com
Daily we get questions emailed to us asking how-to advice, what our recommendations are etc... We do not know everything so we started this podcast to share what information we know and call upon other staining contractors, product manufacturers and industry leaders to bring you the latest information and answer all of your questions the best way possible.
The most common question I get asked is "What is the difference between oil based and water based stains?"
I recommend an oil based stain for most projects, but there are some really good uses for water based stains. Oil based stains (at least the good ones) contain penetrating oils that soak deep into the wood and protect the wood from the inside out and allow the wood to breathe but still repel water.
Water based stains form a film or what you might call a protective barrier on the surface of the wood. This coating sheds water and blocks uv rays. However, these stains can peel, blister and come off. Oil based stain simply don't have these problems.
When should I, when is the best time stain my wood?
Usually the answer is right now! We make our decision on the species of the wood, the treatment or lack there of and whether or not the board was kiln dried. Most lumber manufacturers recommend that your outdoor wood project is stained within the first 6 weeks after construction, some recommend as soon as 2-3 days. In our company we rely heavily on a moisture content meter, we use this one from Lowes. https://www.lowes.com/pd/General-Tools-Instruments-Digital-Moisture-Meter/3136919.
We are looking for a moisture content of 18% or less, the sweet spot being 13%. In a pre staining operation boards must be 13% moisture content or less before staining. We can usually achieve this level after 2 weeks of good dry weather.
