Key Takeaways:

  • There is a trend towards seniors “doing” as opposed to “having things done” for them. The fallacy is that once you reach a certain age, you need help to clean your home's and fix your food.
  • When we treat residents as helpless, it takes away the human need to contribute to something bigger than ourselves.
  • Create buildings and public space to make access to nature easier. Common areas with garden pathways provide year-round access to greenery; a gazebo will offer shade in hot weather.
  • Community gardens create environments where people will tend their crops and then share and swap them. Beyond going out to take a nature walk, tending to plants and watching them grow creates purpose and self-sufficiency.
  • In urban environments, design balconies and decking off the units for individual access to fresh air and a view. If feasible, consider creating a green roof.
  • Technology is being adapted for less tech-savvy users. Look more user-friendly interfaces and functional changes such as larger buttons with more illumination.
